Title: Game Review: Audiosurf
Post by: Shook on August 27, 2008, 10:53 AM
Hey everyone, new here, and i hope to contribute some good stuff :)
Hopefully, this isn't in the wrong place. Please, tell me if it is.
So anyways, i'll be doing a review of Audiosurf, a good little (Rather large actually) indie gem.
As the name implies, you're basically surfing your audio in this game, collecting
colored blocks to make matches in a vivid enviroment that changes to match the
pace of the music.

Now, let's start out by seeing the pluses.

Pro #1: Very flexible system requirements, going from very low-end to the most powerful
gaming rigs.

Pro #2: Great game if you enjoy music, especially because you can use any
track imaginable.

Pro #3: It's compatible with almost all music formats, even .flac and .ogg!

Pro #4: Great graphics on the higher settings.

Pro #5: Many different game modes with three difficulties makes it fun for hardcore
gamers and casual gamers alike.

Pro #6: "Audiosurf Radio" makes up for lack of music with new tracks every friday.

Pro #7: Achievement system gives you something to go for.

Pro #8: The game can appeal to both headbangers and Mozart fans, as the game
is no faster than the music you play.

However, no game comes without minuses.

Con #1: Fairly sharp learning curve. There is a tutorial, but the rest is up to you.

Con #2: Highest graphical settings are very CPU intensive.

Con #3: Some gamemodes are undertipped pointwise compared to others.

Con #4: Nearly impossible to get a high score on any known song unless you've
been playing non-stop since the beta came out.

Con #5: Major jump between the difficulties. A player who's used to Casual (Easy)
does not stand any chance if faced with Elite (Hard).

Con #6: "Audiosurf Radio" shows no direct way of downloading broadcasted music.

Con #7: Some achievements are impossible with the Mono characters.

Con #8: There's not much action for you if you don't like heavier music.

This would add up to an average score, right? Hell no. The pros are so much
bigger than the cons, so i will end up giving it:

8/10

If you like listening to music, i strongly recommend trying Audiosurf. It's one of
those games that will have you staring intensely at the screen while playing.

I hope you got something out of this review!

Hi shook, and welcome to DC!
Starting out with a minireview.. Cool! :D

Here's 2 videos on youtube of people playing the game:

I love the concept, and it's really cool as the game acceelerates and decelerates with the pace of the music :D

That'd be great, everyone at DC loves reviews, that's what we're all about!

Don't worry, that's what we're here for. Just worry about creating the content, we'll help you mold its look ;)
Also, 2 advices:
1 - people love screenshots, and
2 - check out the 'minireview template' in the 'add preset text' dropbox on the reply page, it makes it easier for you to write it and for us to read it ;)

Thanks a bunch, once again :)
The template looks more suited to applications than games though, but hey, one can adapt.
Oh, and screenshot coming right up...

Yeah, it probably is. But still, it gives you a line of thought, and feel free to change anything, it's not like it's a strict rule, the idea is just to make it easier to create a review, because you only have to "fill in the blanks" ;)

Cool!

Just logged into Steam and saw that AudioSurf is now 75% off, or just $2.50 this week only! I can't refuse it now!

Just bought it. I haven't played it since I ran out of my 5 free song trials several months ago. I started it up and now there's a big problem:

There's a smurfing huge white visualization across my display and I can't figure out how to get rid of it! Any tips?

Turns out that major visual bugs are a feature of the "Premium" graphics from the settings menu.

Turning down the graphics to enhanced or normal solves the problem.

Fun game! Take advantage of the $2.50 while it lasts. No real excuse not to get the game now if you haven't already.
