DAY 1:
Ok here's the first screencast of the series. I'm going to make these really short, aiming for two or three minutes each.
The first one is a quick overview of Screenshot Captor:

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] (https://www.donationcoder.com/screencasts/dc/3ds/sc1/sc1.html)

I wand to encourage fellow DC people to make and post screencasts of their DC-shared software during August 2009 along with me.
I used the commercial tool Camtasia (http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.asp), but there are some good free tools (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screencasting_software) as well, including BB Flashback Expresss (http://www.bbsoftware.co.uk/BBFlashBack_FreePlayer.aspx), Wink (http://www.debugmode.com/wink/), and Camstudio (http://camstudio.org/).
You can host the video on youtube or any video sharing site, or even on the dcmember server, just ask.
-
Nice mouser.
And... you sure sounded smarter than space monkeys ;D
-
Good start! This is such an ambitious, and cool, project that it needs stickying to the DC start page.

Impressive demos; impressive product!
(Something's not quite right with the sound in the zoom-pan demo.)
-
you're right - the sound is a bit messed up, though i'm not sure what i did differently -- bad mic position maybe. i'll try to watch for that in future.
-
DAY 7:
The video is just a long 10 minute session of me walking through the various options tabs and explaining what they do:

Since I didn't have to read the manual I had to install ScreenShot Captor. Looks like it's good for stuff with "circles and arra's and a paragraph on the back of each one explainin' what each one was" type of stuff. :)
-
Mouser, these videocasts are wonderful! As you probably know, I'm a big fan of HyperSnap, but your videos made me download Screenshot Captor. I don't expect it to replace HyperSnap for me, but SC has such an immense wealth of features that I'm sure I'll use it as well. Especially since you've demonstrated so clearly how they work.
I can't wait for the FARR videos!
Many thanks for all you do!

Thanks very much for doing the videos. I thought I had explored all the nooks and cranies of FARR--but I learned a few things just now watching the video!!! ;D
-
I liked the Add to Group Alias bit. I have a folder with shortcuts to my editors but there's a bunch and they open up in alphabetical order. I set up "edit" alias in FARR to stack the 6 I use most in most used order. That avoids scrolling through the shortcuts.
-
glad to hear the videos are being watched.
i've got about 15-20 more farr videos planned, so i hope to explore all the intricacies over the next week or two.
-
DAY 13:

we're more than half way through, i'm keeping up my side of the bargain, but where are the other coders on this site who should be adding some screencasts of the software they've created?

For those who are making screencasts of their software, some observations:
1) making multiple short screencasts that are very focused on a particular idea is 100x easier than trying to make one big long screencast; plus it has to be easier on the user. i think 2-4 minutes is the sweet spot.
2) you'd be surprised how long it takes to explain something -- so plan to focus really narrowly.
3) doing a bunch of screencasts one after the other can be quite productive -- once your mind gets into the flow of speaking while you are using the software, it gets more comfortable. so plan to sit there and do quite a few retakes before you start to get comfortable, and then do a bunch of them in a row.
4) if you're aiming for doing lots of screencasts quickly, instead of perfecting each one, then just keep restarting the recording until you get it right, rather than try to edit it post production.

These are great tips. Thanks. This can be applied for any demonstration of anything...I can use it at work when explaining technical things to an audience. Thank you.

DAY 19:
The video shows how to use and configure the built-in mini-toolbar in FARR (https://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/findrun/index.html)...-mouser
In this tutorial you show us how we can add buttons to the toolbar. But what if one wonts to remove those two existing buttons? How to do that?
-
you can't remove them per se (i could add an option to let you remove them), but you can drag and slide the area to the left of them fully to the right to hide all buttons.

-mouser
Excellent! No need for an additional option; making the toolbar really small does the trick (a nice feature is those new buttons you add are at the left side of those two original buttons so they are not hidden also).
Thanks!

Wow, what an incredible program FARR is, it just keeps on getting better and better. Did you ever consider creating your own OS? Just imagine an OS as customizable as FARR with all those tricks up its sleave... *dreaming away.....*
Thanks again!

there are 20 more farr screencasts already recorded and i haven't even gotten to the plugin screencasts yet. :tellme:

Here's another tip for making screencasts, that i have to keep reminding myself.
If you're recording a screencast that may last more than a couple minutes, make sure to pause every once in a while between demonstrating concepts, saying and doing nothing.
That gives you an edit point if you need to cut out some material or splice in new stuff, or overdub some audio. Without the pauses you'll find no good way to edit stuff without having to jump into the middle of sentences, etc.
-
And here's a tip for viewing the screen casts for once.
When viewing one of mouser's screen casts, make sure you move your mouse pointer somewhere where you can't see it. Otherwise, you could come to the conclusion that there's either something wrong with your system or that you're drunk. ;)
-
:)
ps. i have now finished recording all of the base FARR videos (38 of them in total), and i will be moving to work on the plugin screencasts next. looks like i will definitely be doing "Another 30 Days of Screencasts" through September.
-
You are a good person, mouser. i appreciate it.

More real advantage of doing multiple short screencasts:
- less trouble for people on slow connections
- easier to replace one small screencast if you change a feature

So what screencasting capture and editing programs are you using?
(I appologise in advance if this is already answered deep within the thread. IMHO, this "How I did it" info should be included in the lead post.)
and Thanks for the edjukayshunel videos!
-
These have been created with TechSmith's Camtasia (http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.asp), a very good, if expensive, commercial tool.
The truth is however that for these Screencasts, i don't really use any of the advanced features of Camtasia, and could have produced these just as well with some of the free tools I think.
In particular, since I don't do any editing, I think BB Flashback Express (http://www.bbsoftware.co.uk/BBFlashBack.aspx) (free) would be just as good -- and I have used that in the past, and may use it for some of the upcoming screencasts.
-
DAY 23:
Today's video takes a look at the Keyboard Interface Options of [url=https://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/findrun/index.html]FARR[/url-mouser
;D I love it when you explain the Ctrl+Alt+# thing, "ok, I don't know what this does... ok, so that's not really useful" Makes me wonder how many features of FARR you yourself discover while making these excellent screencasts...? ;)
btw, I really love these screencasts. They're very well made, IMO, and I've certainly learned a bit! Thanks!
-
Yeah, at ~$300, Camtasia Studio is a bit pricey for "hobby" screencasting. I have played around with BB Express some and was quite impressed with the features and quality - I thought you may have been using that...
Thanks again!
