Title: Anyone using Silverlight?

I tried the Beta last year and I distinctly remember unpleasant things occurring  :), can't remember the specifics though - I know for sure that there were freezes/crashes involved. I'm just updating + backing up my system right now and it showed up as an optional component at MS Updates. I'm not installing it before imaging the system but am curious - what's the general consensus on Silverlight? Also, your take on Adobe Air... Adobe tends to remind me more and more of $ymantec these days... Reader bloat, etc.

Silverlight 1.0.21115.0 is working without any problems on my XP, but I have not yet come acrosss any real-life site that is using it, other than Microsoft's demo pages... so if you don't have it  you won't miss it.

I don't know anything about Adobe Air, because I don't have Air (!).

-several years later and I still don't know if I have gained anything at all from having Silverlight installed. I have never come across a page (except demo pages) that made me realize Silverlight was in action. Examples, please? Or is Real Life that Silverlight is for coders only?

Oh yeah - I meant the Siverlight program, not merely the browser plugin

I use it for Twit TV and Netflix.  Twit TV is fine but Netflix often the video is so dark it's like radio.  There's no way to adjust brightness and contrast.  Seems like either you have no problem at all, or it's just about useless for watching streaming movies.

If you go on Netflix's user forum there's a thread that will never die with 2 groups of posters.  The "it's so dark I can't see the movie" group and the "I don't have any problem at all" group.  Seems like there's some hw issue that no one is able or willing to delineate.


If you like Leo LaPorte then you might have reason to run it. :)

It's kind of disappointing that more sites don't use Silverlight. Everytime I've seen video done in Silverlight it's been far superior to anything in Flash by a wide margin. Much nicer to use. Oh well.

But no... There are no sites that I regularly use that use Silverlight.

The Microsoft Partner website's training materials.

You have no choice.  :-\

But I haven't experienced any problems (or epiphanies) while using it so I don't really care.

Me.  Dungeons and Dragons site for their utilities.  Also, my work site develops using it.  I think it's mostly intranet use as of now.

I've never used Silverlight, as far as I know, but I did briefly use Adobe Air.  Someone asked me to give him feedback on a language-learning program he had developed, and it required Adobe Air.  All I remember now is that the EULA for Adobe Air troubled me.  IIRC, it had me waiving all kinds of rights to privacy, etc.  As soon as I had put his program through its paces, I uninstalled both the program and Adobe Air.

This seems to be an increasingly disturbing trend with software vendors using their software basically as a personal trojan into people's lives. As for Adobe Air itself, I loathe it. Most of the software I've used that uses AA is simply horrible to use. Adobe's help uses it, and it's god-awful. (And who is the retard that thought putting all help online was a good idea?)

Started watching a talk (http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/MIX/MIX11/EXT13) recently via Silverlight.  It did seem nicer than many Flash-based experiences.

Silverlight might gain some more popularity with Windows Phone 7 (http://www.silverlight.net/getstarted/devices/windows-phone/) and device development with the brand new Windows Embedded Compact 7 (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee502198.aspx).

Strangely enough, Silverlight for Windows Embedded is currently for native (C++) development only, while Windows Phone 7 applications are typically programmed with managed code (mostly C# I guess).
