Title: Real life version of a Half Life 2 map
Post by: nudone on October 11, 2011, 06:05 AM
This is probably old news, not found it on DC anywhere, though, so here goes...

Ever wanted to walk around a real life version of Half Life 2, complete with ledges that will easily send you to your grave? Well, now you can. Simply visit the Caminito del Rey http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caminito_del_Rey and start having instant Half Life flashbacks.

Here's a youtube clip (one of many) which resembles the best complete "walkthrough" of the level.

For added authenticity, take your own headless, plucked, chickens and pretend they are Half Life Headcrabs.

(Looks like it's going to be a tourist destination eventually as there are plans to reopen the path - at the moment you have to abseil to it.)

I had to turn this off half way through because I started to feel nervous and queasy.

lol
I wasnt quite so bad, but it did get the adrenalin going...
If I was doing that I sure would be hooked on to that safety wire - no, being realistic, I dont think I could manage it IRL

I forced myself to sit through it. Ugh. I would die of terror if I attempted anything like that :-O

That'd be great if they could put a bungee jump spanning it!

The best part is that the guy who is filming doesn't appear to have a safety rope or anything like that :o

Did anybody else find themselves leaning when he was walking across those thin poles? :s

The best part is that the guy who is filming doesn't appear to have a safety rope or anything like that :o

He did seem to clip himself on once or twice, but for about 95% of it, he seems to be "Free Walking" the entire thing :O

The Wikipedia entry says that video is a test for acrophobiaw, and the original Youtube description says:
The original version. Filmed with a Sony handycam. No clipping.

Insane :o

Myself I'm not particularly afraid of heights, but I do have a healthy respect for them.
(says the guy who, when a teenager, worked two summers at the carnival tightening Ferris Wheel turnbuckles from a few stories up; no safety line.  :'( )

If by some perverse turn of fate you liked this video, look up Mount Huashan.

The Wikipedia entry says that video is a test for agoraphobia, and the original Youtube description says:

The Acrophobia  entry says "Acrophobia  is an extreme or irrational fear of heights." Fearing this is not irrational. More likely this is a test for insanity.

Theres no such thing as a "Fear of Heights" - Its actually falling to your doom that people are scared of!

Falling doesn't bother me; it's the sudden stop at the end that I'm not fond of!  :P

I started feeling hungry half-way through. What's wrong with me? :D

Seriously though, crazy stuff. I don't get why he's stepping next to the holes in the concrete, I would be stepping on the metal sides at those parts. Oh well, he survived...

I'm a bit disappointed no one has done a sprint run around the path. That's what you'd be expected to do in Half-Life; leaping over the collapsed sections rather than tip-toeing over the steel rods - how hard can it be, I've done it loads of times in the game - and only fell to my death occasionally.

IFYP.

Your name puts a Lady Gaga Song (http://www.directlyrics.com/lady-gaga-born-this-way-lyrics.html) in my head...now I feel sad  :(

It doesn't matter if you love him, or capital H-I-M

  :tellme: :o ;D

IFYP = I feel your pain <--- I hope google is correct...I shouldn't have to google for strange, barely used acronyms :(

This is what I meant (well, "I fixed your post" to be precise) - I see this used quite often in another forum that I frequent - did not think it is a strange, barely used acronym (though it is a fairly niche forum).

FTFY (Fixed That For You) is quite common on Slashdot and I'm familiar with it as a result. Same use as IFYP.

This chat reminded me of something I hear on a "MacGyver" episode, a long time ago:
"Is not the fall that scares me, is the sudden stop that follows it"
