Title: How To Destroy the World with Nanotechnology
Post by: mouser on March 15, 2009, 03:41 PM
Very well done techny evil humor..
This is a promo video for a new book called Be Amazing (http://www.amazon.com/Mental-Floss-Presents-Be-Amazing/dp/0061251488).

If you want to destroy the world, don't bother building a hydrogen bomb, just steal some self-replicating nanobots and cover the Earth in a layer of all-consuming grey goo. That's the moral of a hilarious video, which appeared this morning on the Mental Floss website:

Longtime readers may recall a number of other films I’ve created for mental_floss, including Famous Last Words and Attack of the Parasites! It’s been awhile since I’ve unveiled a new floss movie, and for those rabid fans who’ve been wondering where the next one is (uh … I’m sure there are a few of you), wait no longer! I and a small team of talented animators have been working on a super fun promotional video for Be Amazing! for A YEAR — and we pulled out all the stops. It was created with cutting-edge motion capture technology (which is why it took so darn long), and it dramatizes one of my favorite chapters of the book: “How to Destroy Civilization with Nanotechnology.” So check out the video, buy the book and Be Amazing!

Funny movie!  ;D
Did you know: An SF-Author wrote about nanorobots - this was the beginning of the nanotech-science! This shows how fantasy can become reality.

Kind of cute video, but disappointed me a bit:

first, it's a bit silly that the evildoer has no clue that he miiight end up being engulfed in his own plan to destroy the world. Come oooon, people.

Second, the video doesn't show the exponential growth. OK, so this isn't a 100%-accurate-science kind of video, but still. It's talking about exponential growth, but then showing linear reproduction of the nanobots instead of exponential. That's just dumb.

Otherwise, I liked the visual style and the tongue-in-cheek tone :)

How to be awesomely stupid! Misunderstand Exponential for Linear! Be an evil scientist who plans to destroy the world without realizing that you live on the world and will be destroyed along with it!

Now you're stupidly AWESOME!

Nanotech and genetic modification is heavily featured in the SF "Beggars In Spain" trilogy by Nancy Kress, which I am just finishing reading.  Highly recommended.
