Lately it's been the fantastic file manager, XYplorer (http://www.xyplorer.com/index.htm), and the ACDSee 9 (http://www.acdsee.com/products/acdsee/index) image viewer/editor.

My long time favorite application is EditPad Pro.  Find & Run Robot has quickly become an application I can't imagine living without.  Like you, Z, XYPlorer has quickly become an absolute favorite application.  That's my top three, but there are more applications I love . . . (http://theprawn.com/?p=software)

My favorite goes to FirstDefense-ISR. Backup is fast and reliable. Saves me from "bad" software.

Others will be:
- Opera (no more buggy FF extensions! yay!)
- System Safety Monitor (very active in development)
- Becky! Internet Mail (love its simplicity)
- LaunchBar Commander (best useful free software I've ever used in my life)

Other favorites include:

- Synergy
- Website Watcher
- EmEditor
- AI-Roboform
- VMWare Workstation

Edit: Just downloaded StrokeIt, thanks for hooking me up!

I'm a user of my own programs so naturally i like them, but my #1 fave app is Website Watcher (note, there is a 50% discount for dc members on wsw through september).

Here's a list of tools I use daily (and I really love them):

- Servant Salamander 2.5
- SyncBackSE
- WinRAR
- TheBat
- Scotty (WinPatrol Plus)
- TrueCrypt (for the sources of my apps)
- ProcessTamer
- EditPadPro (I use it also to write forum posts with live spelling and a good set of predefined clips for quotes, bold text, URLs, text phrases etc. and a custom highlighter to colorize quotes and other stuff. It's the fastest way to answer questions in my own forums)

And of course my own tools:

- WebSite-Watcher
- AM-Notebook
- Local Website Archive

well... other than the obvious autohotkey (http://autohotkey.com), my favourites are: (ordered from more important to less important)

FindAndRunRobot
Opera
GridMove
DOpus
gvim
keepass
Winamp

Definitelly, those are the ones I NEED my computer to have installed for me to able to use it normally, which means those are the apps i miss most when i use other people's computers.

Post by: f0dder on September 21, 2006, 04:04 AM
I think these are the most important...

xplorer^2 (http://zabkat.com) - because it's faster and smarter.
website watcher (http://aignes.com) - keeps me up-to-date.
vmware (http://vmware.com) - because it makes life safer.
VIM (http://www.vim.org) - because it's magical.
Notepad++ (http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net) - because it's free and I'm not hardcore enough with VIM yet :P
subversion (http://subversion.tigris.org) - because source control is necessary.
tortoiseSVN (http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/) - because it's nifty.
SCons (http://www.scons.org) - because makefiles suck.
WinRAR (http://rarlabs.com) - because it's one of the best compressors, with very good commandline support.
PuTTY (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty) - because it's the least-hassle SSH client I've used.[/url]
ToDoList (http://www.abstractspoon.com) - because I tend to forget things and suck at managing time.

What's my favorites? Or maybe what is it that I just can't live without?

First & formost...

My own DClock (http://www.appsapps.info/dclock2.php). I would go nuts if I didn't see it at the top of my screen....it HAS to be there. I even keep an older version (http://www.appsapps.info/dclock.php) that doesn't create registry entries on a floppy in my purse in case I find myself on someone else's pc.  ;D

Then the rest:

Post by: zj on September 21, 2006, 05:36 AM
- Becky! Internet Mail (love its simplicity)

Can't agree with you more. In addition my favorites include:
- secureCRT (very flexible SSH client with tabbed UI)
- Emacs (one of the best choice for programming and writing latex documents)
- bbLean (a compact shell-replacement of explore.exe)
- Total Commander
- Firefox
- EmEditor (a modern and powerful text editor 8))

and the following two are discovered very recently:
- Website-Watcher (thanks to Martin :P)
- My Notes Center (feature rich, and also it is a mouse-free software.)

After I made the post on what was my favorites, I came across a cute email in my inbox that I blogged about here (http://cranialsoup.blogspot.com/2006/09/this-thing-called-psp.html), which made me realize I had forgotten some major program I can't live without:

Paintshop Pro 7 (I don't like the newer versions and will only use that one)

Productivity:
Editplus - I just use it all the time.
Visual Studio - I just love Intellisense! Makes coding so much faster.

Raising Hell... Err... I mean for privacy:
TOR (http://tor.eff.org/)

That Tor stuff... Man... It is SOOOOO open to abuse...

Programmes I can't live without [definition: use and require every day] (in descending order):

Programmes I'm [quickly] getting attached to:

 I note that I've not added a file manager: I've probably tried them all, just can't settle on one is my problem!

I should probably add the graphics programmes somewhere (like DogWaffle, PhotoImpact, GIMP) but that's more hobby (like VisualStudio)

Nice to see so many Opera lovers. It's a fantastic piece of software. A browser that vrooms past you like a bullet-train leaving you breathless. Okay, that was bit too much..but you get the idea.

I suppose in terms of what I use every single day I'd have to say;

Thats all I can think of off hand. Nothing too exciting really, notice they're all free? I'm not a cheapskate, honestly.

[edit]Oh I forgot Subversion (http://subversion.tigris.org/) using RapidSVN (http://rapidsvn.tigris.org/).[/edit]

Hoo boy... Can o' worms comin' through!!

These are the ones I use either constantly or on a regular basis...

PowerPro (http://powerpro.webeddie.com)- For oh, so many wonderful reasons.
xplorer^2 (http://zabkat.com/)- Man, what a concept... Two file panes=more work done. Who'd a thunk it?
JS Pager (http://www.skinnables.org/archive.php?&current_dir=archive/jspager)- Since discovering the concept of Virtual Desktops in Linux, I can't live without it.
FireFox (http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/)- Sorry Opera lovers, it just rubs me wrong. Don't try to convert me, I've made up my mind.
Avira Personal (http://www.avira.com/en/products/productfamily.php?id_prc=6)- Not.One.Virus.Ever.
7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org)- Obvious.
GNU Utilities for Windows (http://unxutils.sourceforge.net/)- NOT the Cygwin ones!! (ech!)
AutoHotkey (http://www.autohotkey.com) or AutoIt (http://www.autoitscript.com/autoit3/)- Your choice, they're both good.
Scite (http://www.scintilla.org/SciTE.html)- For editing my Auto-whatsit scripts.
PDFCreator (http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/) and PDFTK (http://www.accesspdf.com/pdftk/) and PDFBlender (http://www.spaceblue.com/pdfblender/)- Cause I'm too cheap for Acrobat Distiller...
XnView (http://perso.orange.fr/pierre.g/xnview/enhome.html) or IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com/)- Take your pick.
ContextEdit (http://www.google.com/search?q=cnxtedit)- h@x0r those pesky context menus! (linked from a google search because PCMag wants money for a freeware product...)

And I probably missed a few...

Inkscape-vector graphics editor, just damn cool, even your mistakes look cool
  Net Transport-downloader of choice,records streams,etc.
  Google Earth-Just damn fun
  Opera-browser of choice
Firefox-cause Opera doesn't always cut the mustard.
  FlashFXP-my ftp client of choice

Well, I like all my software, but aside from my firewall, anitvirus, etc programs, that run all the time these are the programs I use the most:

Directory Opus. I use it far more than any other program.
OneNote. Wonderful for writing in pen on tablet pcs.
Website Watcher. Tells me when my software is updated
SyncBackSE. Great backup/sync program. It has more awards than I have brain cells.
UltraEdit. Felxible, powerful text editor
FeedDemon. Powerful, flexible, easy to use news aggregator
Quicken. I've used it for home and business accounting for over 10 years
Offline Explorer Pro. Still my favorite program for downloading web sites.

Paintshop Pro 7 (I don't like the newer versions and will only use that one)
Any reason you don't like 8? Haven't tried 9, but after corel bought PSP it *did* turn darn awful.

I have full versions of 7 & 8.

Somewhere between versions 7 & 8 the guys at Jasc decided that it would be a great idea to toss out the window half of the good things that made it worth buying.

Without removing 1 feature they managed to take this away:

In addition to all the useless new crap they added, they also gave you the following:

So now, instead of getting a faster program that was easier to use than Photoshop, yet just as powerful, and for less money, you ended up with a cheap imitation of Photoshop, which is not what Paintshop Pro users want or need.

The exception to this is the trial of version 9. That was worth installing on a slow Win9x or 2k machine alongside version 7 for one reason only:

The ability to see thumbnails of .psp & .tub files in Explorer. There is no way you can actually run PSP 9 on a 233mhz machine with 64mb ram, but those thumbnails are really nice. And even after the trial expires, you can still see the Explorer thumbnails.

But you can also get that with this freeware utility and it actually works better than what is supplied by PSP 9+ and they have finally updated it to include 9x and 2k versions:

ACA capture PRO - powerful screen capture software.
www.acasystems.com (http://www.acasystems.com)

Well, I tried ACA capture PRO just now, it seems the thing is powered by dirty publicity (false claims, paid reviews and deceitful download buttons) rather than real functionality.  :)

And most amusing of all, the website claims that the program "gets" a CNET Editor's rating of 5/5, while in fact there's no CNET review at all, only a user rating of 2/5 which says the thing is crap.

Hello titan216, thank you for your interest in our forums and introducing ACA to everyone here.  :)

As you can see, some forum members and I believe you are affiliated with the product ACA which you mentioned, based on your previous posts (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=46464;sa=showPosts (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=46464;sa=showPosts))

Please refer to https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=3429.0 (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=3429.0) for more information with regard to "obligation of disclosure"

BUT we take VERY seriously the obligation of disclosure - you absolutely must disclose when you have a relationship with a company or product when you post about it.

No offense, but I'd like to ask you to unambiguously clarify your affiliation with the ACA company and its products as soon as possible, since spamming is not in any way tolerated on our forums and will lead to permanent deletion of all related current and previous posts considered as spam.

i've talked with titan, and he's just a regular user - i think this was really just a matter of confusion in style of message posting, and we should all welcome titan216 with a nice warm welcome the way we normally welcome users  :-*

i think we just jumped the gun here because titan's posts "seemed" like a spam advertisement.

some thoughts that might be worth reading for new visitors to our site:

People on forums get really used to being "spammed" by advertisers, and they learn to recognize patterns.

Some posts have the "flavor" of one of these spam advertisements:
1) users very first posts are about the product and in different sections, repeating themself.
2) posts look like a copy and paste of program description from the website.

In general, people on almost all forums will expect a new person to post a few posts that don't have to do with a commercial program when they first arrive on a site, just so people can get to know them and trust them a little.  and then when you do post about a commercial program you might want to make very clear you aren't associated with the company and post your own thoughts rather than pasting from the product page.

anyway, welcome to the site titan216!

Back in the days of yore windows...

I also liked Total Commander very much. IIRC, it even had a means to integrate with an archiver program so one could easily browse through archives. It is possible, however, I am confusing this with the opensourced and GPL'd Midnight Commander (http://www.ibiblio.org/mc/).

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Anyway, the two-paned interface is extremely efficient. Too bad there is no way my beloved ROX-Filer (http://rox.sf.net/) would support this. Its approach is too different.

My favourite ones are:

- xplorer² (I always wonder how could I live without it so much time. Indispensable)
- Opera (THE Browser. A perfect example of a good software design. It really helps on the Internet)
- foobar2000 (Hard to learn, hard to master. But no other can match its features)
- XMPlay (Or how Winamp should be. An small program with big features)
- WinRAR (The perfect compression tool. I don't think anyone could do better than this)
- jv16 PowerTools (Not only registry cleaning, but a lot of other tools who do their work better than separate programs. It's also very compact for its features)
- EDXOR (The perfect Notepad replacement)
- Wallpaper Master (Invaluable. The only thing I care about it now is how to download more wallpapers)
- Total Uninstall (The first program I install after formatting the HDD. It saves my computer life so many times than I more than thankful)
- CCleaner (Custom cleaning. That's its power)
- PSPad (Much better than Free Pascal IDE ;D)

I think that covers all.

My list

HTML Editor: HTML Kit
Text Editor: PSPAD or TextPad
Antivirus: ESET
Screenshot Capture: Screenshot Captor (not only easy, but lots of cool features, great for beginners)
WIndows Cleaner: CCleaner
Firewall: Sunbelt Kerio
Defrag: PerfectDisk (though they screwed up the user interface in version 8, version 7 was far more beginner friendly)
Web Analytics: Stuffed Tracker
Digital Photo Editor: Paint Shop Pro (the new learning center is great for beginners, plus the one button photo touchup)
FTP: Filezilla (doesnt burp on errors, it actually retries, novel idea)
Zip: 7-zip - havent found anything it can't unzip

Im sure there are a slew of others, but I'm writing this from memory.

     Find and Run Robot
     Process Tamer
RoboForm (http://www.roboform.com) (auto-logon and form filler)
PopFile (http://popfile.sourceforge.net) (powerful FREE spam filtering, but not easy to setup)

FolderShare (http://www.foldershare.com) (FREE file syncing between PC's - across the net)

Push The Freakin' Button (http://downloads.pcworld.com/pub/new/utilities/hard_disk/PTFB1064.zip) (automates the pushing of buttons for given windows - last FREE version)

And just recently, because of the discount software listing here at DonationCoder, I found a new must have app called Surfulater (http://www.surfulater.com).  It's hard to explain exactly what it is, so please just check it out. Thank you to DonationCoder for introducing me to this incredible software!

File Manager: Directory Opus - best file management application i've come across! [Tangent: Though I am on the hunt for a new Tag based file manager, because i like to download and archive software i want to be able to store its related information in a database like format so i can quickly search my laptop when not on the net to give friends the files they need.]

Text Manager(editor): Ultraedit - does everything i ever need to do with text, rarely do i need its powers, but it is good to have it!

Productivity: ATNotes - awesome FREE utility for desktop sticky notes.

Productivity: Find&RunRobot - absolutely awesome and exactly what i wished for! Thank you! :)

Internet Browser: Firefox - love the extensibility! Though opera was ahead in terms of feature set, and the smallest neatest package.

Besides these though i use a lot of apps, and like true software connoisseurs i am always on the hunt for the right tool for the right job...
i have used and use occasionally others like strokeit, mozy, ...etc.
I prefere small footprint apps, so that i can have more of them running at the same time! hehe :). Thats why dc's one-trick ponies are fabulous! I loved the whole gridmove discussion though i've resisted using it for some odd reason...

That's what the blue banner in my signature is about.  Click that and you will see how we are doing on the DC Whatpulse team....how many keys we have typed, how many mouse clicks, and each user's individual page will also show how many miles they have moved their mouse.

And if you are not listed there and want to be...please join!

It doesn't log what you type or click...it just counts the number of keystrokes and mouse clicks and distance the mouse has moved.

At the risk of sounding like a boot lick, I only have 1 indispensable program:

Find and Run Robot

Others I love:

Gyula's Navigator (http://www.wanari.com/products/gynav/) : I use this file manager at work and I have never found one that has a great combination of features that I need:  It is freeware, is completely portable so I can run it off a USB stick, and (this is the biggie) uses its own built in copy/move code and not explorers.  I use it to transfer data from failing drives and such so when explorer encounters an error copying, for whatever reason (in use, etc) it just STOPS.  This is infuriating.  This program gives an error then moves on to the next file.  I use the next program to answer that dialog.

RTVReco (http://www.rtvsoft.com/RtvReco.htm) : Used to automate dialog clicks, works really well.

OpenOffice.org 2.0 :  I actually prefer this to MS Office.

PStart (http://www.pegtop.net/start/) : I use this program for autorun menus on my CDs, USB drives and my 2 external tech drives that have about 2 gigs of tools, programs, etc loaded on it.  LOVE this program.

BartPE (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/) with Reatogo (http://www.reatogo.de/REATOGO.htm) : This combination allows you to make a boot CD that is just amazingly powerful for working on broken XP systems.

Notepad++ (http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm) : This is my text editor of choice, I use it for everything including my ASP scripting.  Fast and furious, great great program.

MP3Tag (http://www.mp3tag.de/en/) : My favorite MP3 tag manager.  Works really well.

Doppler (http://www.dopplerradio.net/) : My favorite, and in my opinion, THE best Podcast client out there.  It has a few minor bugs, but it more than makes up for it in functionality.

There are more, oh yes there are more.  I just don't have the time! I may make a list and make another response.

Software I could not live without:

FARR : I find myself trying to bring it up on other peoples computers and forgetting that it's not part of windows.

Notepad++ : Very fast, very integrated, very powerful.  Haven't touched notepad or wordpad in months.

UltraVNC : lots of features, free, maintained regularly

Ableton Live : makes music production a hell of a lot of fun.

Audacity : FREE! great for quick audio projects when I don't feel like using the massive, messy ProTools

Firefox : haven't used IE in years, don't think I ever will again.

IZarc : I've yet to find a better-made archive tool.

VLC Media Player : ugly, but extremely powerful and reliable

MAX/MSP : I hate coding, but somehow, even though this it's basically coding, I enjoy dragging lines around to boxes.  Makes it more like a logic puzzle, and a game, rather than a chore.  Mostly used for art installations, or other media-related coding needs.

well, I can't pick just 1 cause there are way too many on my PC...so probobly a 3-way tie between Process Tamer, Internet Explorer 7, and a little program called CleanUp!

Courier (email)
I'm glad to see someone mentioned the Courier 3.5 e-mail client.  What makes Courier really good is not the client itself (although it's very good), but that it integrates with the Time & Chaos 6.0 PIM.  T&C is an excellent PIM.  There are many user definable fields, it syncs to your PDA (either Palm or Pocket PC), and it even exports its database in XML format.

Courier can add e-mail addresses to T&C and vice versa.  Chaos Software is currently selling Time & Chaos 7.0 (http://www.chaossoftware.com/chaos.asp), but currently only the T&C version 6 database is compatible with Courier 3.5.

Courier 3.5 (http://rosecitysoftware.com/courier) is an excellent e-mail client in its own right, but users that get lots of spam and know how to write strong regexp's will like it best with its powerful filtering capacity.  You can even have its filters color code your e-mail titles.

Courier's down side is its (1) poor handling of default and foreign fonts, (2) poor IMAP4 support, (3) poor template support, and (4) it won't reflow quoted text in replies.  Many other e-mail clients aren't much better.  TheBat! doesn't suffer from these four flaws, but it won't integrate with a powerful PIM either as Courier can.

Wetware, for the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posthuman in you: read a multiply awarded book http://www.accelerando.org/ free online. Advanced use only. Strict minimum consciousness and knowledge level requirements apply.

For exocortical use:

VirtuaWin

It's in constant use. Thousands of times per day. The OS, I feel, sucks without it almost as bad as it does without FARR. I use it by mousing to left and right screen edge. Set it up with about 150 ms delay and 20 pixel jump. I usually use only horizontal screens, cause even a 3 by 3 grid makes my puny primate brain hurt.

1 or 2 file managing
1 search
1 text editor
1 info managing
1 audio player
1 video player
1 browsing
1 remote desktop

The machines on Remote Desktop or VNC use vertical mouse switching.

Absolutely, positively, indispensable.

Now, my list:
  - powerpro: can't live without it for years
  - autohotkey: might replace powerpro if I can rewrite my shortcuts and scripts
  - al ex-sysinternals utilities (mostly: ProcessExplorer, PsTools, Handle.exe), now property of Microsoft
  - maxthon: so time-saving, can't imagine browsing without it
  - IZArc: clean, fast, reliable
  - IrfanView: what else?
  - FileZilla: easy, efficient
  - ScreenshotCaptor: no other screenshot tool can match it
  - VisualStudio 2005: mostly because of intellisense (as mentioned earlier in this thread)
  - DeepBurner Pro: burning made easy
  - Orb: access my pictures and music from everywhere
  - Vim: spent too many years on Unix machines to work without it
  - EmEditor: slowly replacing vim on my boxes

1. Directory Opus (http://www.gpsoft.com.au/)
- By far the best file manager available, and well worth the asking price. Excellent support & the application just feels "right." It handles most of my image-management-, S/FTP- & global hotkey-needs in addition to the excellent file handling. The search functions are among the best I've ever seen, rivaling even most of the dedicated search apps. Probably the worlds most customizable application, something that just adds to the value. My only issue with it is that the license is a bit restrictive, but that's not really related to the program itself.

2. [url=http://www.ghisler.com/[/url]Total Commander[/url]
- The second best file manager, that complements Dopus well with its large collection of file-system plugins. My only real problem with it is not the application itself, but rather the fact that it's a pain in the read-end to actually buy/register it. Buying applications online should never be as hard as this, ever! Also, the program itself could use some more options to configure its core functions, as there is no reason to force me to press "yes, I'm sure for the 1000th damn time that I want to delete this folder, even if there's a system file in it!" Other than those issues, I mostly love it :)

3. Find And Run Robot.
- I have barely touched the start-menu since I installed this. It's fast, easy to use & in general makes my life easier. I like that!

4. Zoom Player WMV Professional (http://www.inmatrix.com/)
Watching videos without Zoom Player is a pain. While it's not for everyone, I absolutely love the filter-management features, and the full-screen navigators in the latest 5 betas are excellent. Really makes it easier to watch videos from the PC on the old 'tube'. The only thing it needs to be perfect is internal subtitle parsing so that you could have re-synced them using hotkeys, instead of having to open the Directvobsub interface.

5. Foobar 2000 (http://www.foobar2000.org/)
- After discovering Foobar 2k, all other audio-players got uninstalled. There's no need for anything else when you already have the perfect player right here. It's fast, has excellent unicode handling (which is more than you can say for WMP & WinAMP :-\), handles any format I throw at it, it's playlist-centric & I can customize it to do just about anything.

6. True Launch Bar (http://www.truelaunchbar.com/)
- Quick-launch toolbars the way it should be done. The fact that it supports plugins only makes it better, as today I wouldn't dream of not having a media toolbar for controlling my audio player of choice.

7. Taskbar Shuffle (http://www.freewebs.com/nerdcave/taskbarshuffle.htm)
- Why this function never was implemented in Windows is a mystery, but who really cares when there's excellent freeware applications that makes re-ordering taskbar items as easy as this?

8. Opera (http://www.opera.com/)
- This is exactly how a browser should be made. About as close to perfect as such an application can be.

9. Ad Muncher (http://www.admuncher.com/)
- The best ad-filtering utility available. Really, it's brilliant. Just looking at the stats since my last OS installation makes me smile :)
Ad Muncher Usage Statistics for v4.7 Build 27105/1416
Adverts removed by Ad Muncher:  46,690
Approximate bandwidth saved:    364 MB

10. Faststone Image Viewer (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/FastStone_Image_Viewer/1106292852/1)
- I think I've tried close to all available image browsers, but this is what use when I have to do more with the image than Dopus can take care of. My favourite feature is probably the superb wallpaper functions and the full-screen browser/editing functions. If not for the fact that it uses one of those terrible skinned interfaces (it's really bad, without any option to use the Windows default), I'd give it a close-to-perfect score.

Tekzel,

Do you have an old version with a different license, or work in a college?  I just looked at their license terms, and it's only free for personal or educational use, otherwise $20 for 5 licenses.  Cheap, but not free for business use.

My Favorite Software List.
Some software I consider to be "part and parcel" of Windows. I can't live without them.

The fastest Image Viewer.

I never use IE. Only exception is Microsoft sites.

THE best compression tool

Lastly Notepad. Note this "normal" Notepad and not Notepad2. I like it so much because its tremendously fast and contains no unnecessary bells and whistles.

If you must have a Windows Notepad-style editor instead of a proper WordStar-style one, don't overlook
TED Notepad (http://jsimlo.sk/)

Small, fast, freeware, no-install version if preferred, many more features than Microsoft Notepad.

hehe, time for me to make a vim plug :)
As fast as Notepad, and, well, more features that you can learn in years, see:

rayninfo.co.uk/vimtips.html
David Rayner (zzapper) 15 Years of Vi + 5 years of Vim and still learning

Available on any OS pretty much, you can work over a shell (no graphical interface) and be happy, faster than any other editor once you know the basics.

And of course, people looking at you editing code may think that you have mental powers and control the editing changes by pure force of will :)

I have dozens of favorite utilities, tools, shell extensions, etc. most that I couldn't live without.

But I have to say that my two favorite programs, the one's I use the most to get the bulk of my work done are Excel and Word (both 2002).  Incredibly customizable (Excel needs a little AutoHotkey to fully customize well) and extremely powerful.  Yes, to get the most out of them involves a long learning curve, but the time invested has been worthwhile.

For starters, I am running Windows XP Professional SP2.  I am not affiliated with any of the software products listed below.  I've marked payware with a $$ after the link.  Everything else is freeware or donationware.

Opera (http://www.opera.com) -  I absolutely love this browser.  I think it is more polished than firefox, and more secure than IE.  I admit that I miss some of the extensions in firefox, but not enough to switch back.

FirstDefense-ISR (http://raxco.com/products/fdisr/) $$ - The ISR stands for Immediate System Recovery.  This program is amazing.  It allows you to have multiple snapshots of your operating system that you can switch to as quickly as you can reboot your computer.  It has saved me more than once in the 6 months that I have been using it.  As an example, I updated a security application recently and had to reboot to complete the update.  My machine proceeded to BSOD repeatedly when attempting to boot.  I simply hit the reset button, pressed F1 when the ISR logo appeared right after CMOS screen, selected an alternate snapshot and was up and running in less than a minute.  It also has a freeze function that reverts your computer to a preset state at each reboot.

NOD32 AV (http://eset.com) $$ , Jetico Firewall v1.0 (http://www.jetico.com/), and System Safety Monitor (http://www.syssafety.com/) $$ - Together, these three programs protect me from just about anything that is out there.  Along with the use of Opera for browsing and ISR waiting in the wings in case of a disaster, I feel invincible.  There was a brief problem with a new version of SSM not playing nice with Jetico, but a quick update by the authors fixed it.

Directory Opus (http://www.gpsoft.com) $$ - Amazing filemanager that does it all.  I tried quite a few, hoping to find something that was a lot cheaper than this one, but in the end I felt that it was worth every penny.  The best part about it is that you can customize it to do just about anything you could possibly want with your files.

FindAndRunRobot - Love it.  I am slowly getting used to being able to start programs by just hitting Break and typing.  I actually caught myself tryng it on a computer that didn't have it today.  That is a sure sign to me that the program is a hit.

Locate32 (http://locate32.webhop.org/) - Fast file search utility.  It creates a database of all your files.  I can search for a single filename on my computer (over 300gigs) and find it in seconds with this program.  I wish the documentation was better (or existed at all), but I loved it enough to donate to the author.

UltraVNC (http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/) - I use a ssh connection from work to my router (running dd--wrt http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/index.php) to tunnel into my home network and connect to my PC with this.

foobar2000 (http://www.foobar2000.org) - My mp3 player of choice.  I don't care for skins, visualizations, etc.  Foobar plays my music, and plays it well.

Process Explorer (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/ProcessExplorer.mspx) - What task manager should have been.  This is one of the first programs I install when working with a PC, and I have it running all the time in my system tray.

ClipMate (http://www.thornsoft.com) $$ - I manipulate a lot of text for work, so this is invaluable.

TrueLaunchBar (http://truelaunchbar.com $$ - This just makes my computing life easier.  I actually run with my taskbar at the bottom (with a truelaunchbar enhanced quick launch) and a toolbar across the top of the screen with some truelaunch plugins and my clipmate toolbar.  I loose a tiny bit of screen real estate, but I work faster.

EditPad Lite (http://www.editpadpro.com/editpadlite.html) - Free and powerful text editor.  I used it to write this post :).

VMServer (http://www.vmware.com/products/server/) - Even though my computer is barely able to handle it, I still get a smile on my face when I boot up Windows XP inside Windows XP.  I'm just starting to use this program and learning to love it.  I can't believe it is free.

And that's just software that I use on a daily basis.

I'll be happy to discuss how I use any of those in more detail if you're interested.

Of course.

Here is what my screen looks like:
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

The first two Quick Launch icons actually pop up menus when I click on them:

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

The weather plugin in the top left corner shows current conditions when you hover your mouse over it and forcast when you click on it:

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

The Window List plugin shows you a list of open windows and lets you switch to them just like clicking on them in the task bar.  This lets me access running programs without having to move the mouse down to the bottom of the screen.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

The foobar2000 plugin only shows the foobar icon if the program is not running.  When you start the player by clicking the icon or some other method, player controls automatically appear in the toobar:

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

The foobar controls are actually part of the media player plugin.  That plugin can control various players:

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

The command line plugin lets you type commands just like you could with the Run command on the start menu, and even has autocompletion:

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

There are a lot more plugins available:

Okay Curt, FlashNote (http://softvoile.com/flashnote/screenshots.php) is a great idea, and I like it better than sticky apps by far. It sells itself as rough copy, but it's rather 'exact' copy, retaining the formatting of a php file I dumped inside it. Thanks for sharing!

---

I was almost forgetting my number one program; it is very old and have not been update since year 2002. I use it every time I install a program (= almost every day), or if I see a folder with an icon I don't like anymore: Right-click the folder, left-click 'Properties' > 'Customize' > 'Change Icon' - using Customize Folder Shell Extension 1.3.14 (http://www.clonesoft.com/shellicons/index.htm)   :-*

I think you have a similar, but downgraded feature in XP - I use Win2K.

Customize Folder is an operating system shell extension that adds an additional page to the properties of a folder or drive. This additional page provides some additional customizations above those provided by Microsoft.

(Customize Folder Shell Extension = CFSE) For long I would waiste a lot of time navigating from System32 (where CFSE have its DLL, next to Windows' Shell32 icon DLL) to the folder Icons, when I was looking for a new icon. One day I learned about soft and hard -linking. Today I have hardlinked five folders from Pictures > Icons, into System32, so the hole icon replacing process is really fast now.

That's a good idea, hard links are handy. I do it differently: long ago I set up a folder of the icons that I use, so it's always just one source for me...on a hot key.
Quick ways of doing things are very personal, aren't they? What's quick for you might be torture to me, and vice versa.
There's a lot to be learned about how people's brains function by analyzing those kinds of differences (sad to say, mine functions at the speed of treacle pouring over molasses - I need all the help I can get).  :)

I am an "IT-analphabetic", so your words confused me. When you decide to change an icon, and don't wanna use one from the FolderExt.dll or Shell32.dll, but are to browse, how can a hotkey help you then? You can't use a hotkey inside the search-box 'Select Icon File', can you?? Thanks to Explorer I have 4000 icons on the left side of my screen, but that doesn't help me, I think, when I have to browse and 'Select Icon File'.

Curt: You can't use a hotkey inside the search-box 'Select Icon File', can you??
Yes, I can use a hot key there, thanks to my favourite macro software. A hot key enters the location of the folder that holds my icon files, and the 'browse button' does the rest of what I need by matching whatever text I begin to enter.  Or, I can jump directly to the folder and then select by eye.

Total Commander
Xplorer2 (second primarily because of the lack of built-in achive handling)
PowerPro (does everything!)
Opera (so fast and powerful, I love it)
TrueLaunchBar
ClipMate (sometimes I switch to a light cliboard capture program like ClipX (http://bluemars.org/clipx/)
PowerMarks (sure wish they would keep updating this great program)
Find and Run Robot
Screenshot Captor
Xint - notepad replacement (http://www.xtort.net/xtort/xint.php)

I won't question that Opera is fast, its just that I've been testing it for a couple of weeks now, and I cannot see that it should be any faster than Internet Explorer 6, just as fast, but not faster, but it is of course faster than Firefox, which wrongly is being promoted as faster than IE.

But you must be the right guy to tell how to make the UI toolbar smaller?  :tellme:

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ][ You are not allowed to view attachments ][ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I do like my toolbars to be as small as possible, but I've not been able to understand how this can be done in Opera. But maybe this question should be asked somewhere else.

Yes, always something :)
The good news is that, even after years and years of developing our own 'quick' ways to do things, it's still possible for each of us to learn a new trick from another user.
With hot keys, luckily for me I adopted a hot-key system ages ago, before many programs had their own internal hot keys.  Then, I set up just about every keyboard key to have multiple functions: natural; natural+ctrl; natural +ctrl-shift; natural+ctrl+shift+alt.... I've moved that 'system' onto every machine I've owned since, so it's automatic for me now, I will try Fastnote on your recommendation, thanks for pointing it out!

I do like my toolbars to be as small as possible, but I've not been able to understand how this can be done in Opera. But maybe this question should be asked somewhere else.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  <= I hope this works, if so this is my interface.

The UI can be scaled to a certain degree. Press Shift-F12 and the icons can be scaled to a percentage of the standard UI.  I have mine set at 80%.

You can also select minimalist UI's at the Opera site: http://my.opera.com/community/customize/skins/minimalist/
I am using Tango_Cl which looks nice to me.

I have also removed the menu from view to save space.  It is in a single drop down button.

Finally, make sure that the Tab bar is shown "only when needed" and the progress bar replaces the address bar. (Both in the Customize option when you right click the tool bar)  I also put the tab bar on the bottom so that the interface is consistent with one tab or multiple tabs - it does not make the page jump when I open a second tab.

Of course there is always F11, which maximizes the window and hides all of the UI stuff.   :D

Silly me. You wrote "TAB - bar", but I didn't think of it. Yes, of course, the Opera tab-bar is displayed, but there is no tab-bar in IE6 and the one in Firefox is a hole lot smaller than Opera's.

Only now I can see the problem: I forgot to write that I want the various Opera toolbars to merge into one single bar, as I have it in IE and FF - and I can find no way to do that in Opera. That is what the fuss was all about. Sorry for not making my self clear; it has been a frustrating day to me (it is late afternoon around here) and I am all stressed up.

Finally I found it; the way. I must say it have taken me a couple of days to understand how to customize Opera, but now I will change my attitude and give praise to this powerful browser. I like both my Inernet Explorer 6 and Firefox 2, but Opera really is matching both of them 100% - and it is just as small as any, even smaller!

zridling,

Have you looked at Yadabyte Notes (YBN) (http://www.yadabyte.com/Yadabyte_Portables.php)?

The main aim of YBN is to give you one place where you can keep all the "stuff" of your life. A place that you can carry with you to use on any PC, and soon PPC and PALM. If you practice GTD and Todoque then this application is ideal for "collection", list management and archiving. If you don't, it's just a great, simple, note pad.

*    Free, Portable and unlike anything before it.

*    Perpetual Open Notes File - Your notes will be kept in a single file (html) that you can keep using and carry for ever.  This file can be opened in any web browser, text editor or word processor.

*    Every note records its history, so you need never loose information, even if your clear the note.

*    Notes can be a single phone number jotted down in a hurry, a chapter of your next book or anything in between.

*    Natural Navigation - Say goodbye to indexes and lists, YBN uses an innovative text based navigation system. You want John's phone number, type "john". You want the email draught for the Seattle trip, type "Seattle".  You might have a million notes, Natural Navigation will allow you to find them in the fastest, most intuitive way.

*    Spell Checker - Check out the new spell checker feature. Now you don't need to open MSWord every time you need to check your spelling.

How did it mess up XP?

When I tried to delete a setup file in Programs, TaskSwith kept asking if I really wanted it to close. This was right after installation of both, before any first restart.

Welcome to DC, EarthCoder!  :-*

Right now I tried to install ArniWORX awxEditHook_035b124, but a pop-up said that the installation could not be fulfilled because MFC70.DLL wasn't found. Now, where should MFC70.DLL come from - if you know, please?
I did install awxTarget without any problems.

Too many programs? I know the feeling. On the other hand; if you are not yet sooo tired of waiting for Explorer's Pathfinder to open, when you coldstart it, then you don't have TOO many apps! My Pathfinder will take AT LEAST 20 seconds to open...

I think this thread would be more interesting if everybody took some time to quickly describe the software and maybe post a link to the programs' homepages. It would help us discovering new stuff as we don't necessary know every piece of software listed here.

Ok so now i have to show to right example :D

Autohotkey (http://www.autohotkey.com/) - A great scripting language which let you do almost anything under Windows. I discovered it very recently and i already consider as the greatest program i've ever used.

Volumouse (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/volumouse.html) - Let you change Windows' volume by dragging the wheel and holding Ctrl or Alt, or placing the cursor over the taskbar. I find myself trying to use it on every computer now, as if it was an ordinary feature :)

Find and run robot (https://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/findrun/) - Someone does'nt know about this ? :) Launch apps with your keyboard, and more. I removed my Powerpro toolbar since i installed FARR.

Ditto (http://ditto-cp.sourceforge.net/) - A simple clipboard history manager. Very useful, even when working on images.

Taskbar Shuffle (http://www.freewebs.com/nerdcave/taskbarshuffle.htm) - A few tweaks for the Windows taskbar, especially : closing programs by middle-clicking on their tabs in the taskbar. Great time saver.

Freecommander (http://www.freecommander.com/index_fr.htm) - I don't see a lot of people talking about it, so maybe it is considered as crap, but i find it quite useful and easy to use. But i'd love to be convinced that there is a better freeware file manager :)

DaddyClick (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=8608.msg65717#msg65717) - Hmmm okay, it's quite a joke cause DaddyClick is a AHK script i've done, but actually i really enjoy using it :-[ It lets you go to parent folder by double-clicking on whitesapce in open/save dialogs and explorer windows, then it highlights the folder you come from. Maybe still a little buggy...

Well, that's it for now :)

Some current favorites:

Firefox - Well, I switched back to FF from Opera.  I miss the feel of Opera, but I wanted to integrate a notetaking app into the browser.  That being said, I switched to Opera back when FF 2.0 was in beta.  The current release feels more polished.

MusicIP Mixer (http://musicip.com/mixer/index.jsp) - How did I enjoy my mp3s before I found this?  We still have a 30% discount (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=8774.0) running for members.

Surfulater (http://"http://www.surfulater.com) - Notetaking app that integrates with Firefox.  Watch for a 35% members discount in July!

Let me add some apps I consider indispensable, even addictive:

ZTreeWin http://www.ztree.com -- for us keyboard maniacs there's no faster way to manage files and folders, but I agree this one is not for everyone. This is the only shareware item, the rest is freeware:

FARR -- no need to explain, but consider stopping displaying all the desktop icons--and voila!--it's as if you have a new PC, thanks!

TapTap -- thanks again!

Ditto -- already mentioned

The following items were not listed here (I think) and as far as I know just a few people knows about them:

QT TabBar http://quizo.at.infoseek.co.jp/freeware/indexEn.html -- tabs in Windows Explorer and much more

QT Address Bar -- the same page as above -- adds breadcrumbs to WinExp

Startup Delayer http://www.r2.com.au/software.php?page=2&show=startdelay -- lets you specify the order and delay of apps running at startup--gives you unprecedented stability of the system, I was hunting for something like this for years

Hotkeyz http://www.skynergy.com/hotkeyz.html -- create hotkey for virtually anything, including text pasting and macros, again, invaluable for keyboard maniacs

Enjoy!

I never could get startup delayer to work properly, programs that should start minimized didnt, splash screens that id got rid of returned, i got rid of it in a hurry, now using the chameleon startup manager and it works really well, for me, in this case,  you gets whats you pays for, i also had trouble with their media player xion, and uninstalling that was a long term hassle for the novice. It left all sorts of things in registry so it kept appearing in context menus and so on, grrrrr

This was some time ago, well last year, so it could be much better now, and others seem to have no trouble so at the price its sure worth a try  ;)

Actually, i updated and tested it a lot of times and now i think it works pretty fine. It's my first script so it could certainly be better but at least there won't be any bad surprise. Any feedback is welcome :)

The only thing i need to do now is to disable the script when there is no parent folder. It doesn't cause any harm, it just selects a random file as the script is looking for a folder that doesn't exist.

I like the ideas of a startup manager where you can simply designate the startup sequence - i.e. without having to say: delay this by 20 seconds - I have no idea how long individual apps need to start so I'm not going to dictate to them!

Does Chameleon offer that possibility ?
just did a quick search found this thread (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=7301.msg52682#msg52682) where the author seems to say it can - it does sound good anyways  :)
Title: Re: My favorite software! What's yours?
Post by: Curt on June 29, 2007, 08:45 AM
Chameleon may THE finest startup manager there is; the author has done a great job lately - but it is overkill to me. And YES; it will delay each program by so and so many seconds, if you tell it to.
Title: Re: My favorite software! What's yours?
Post by: Curt on June 29, 2007, 09:12 AM
My problem with Chameleon is that I really don't understand why I would need it. What more should I ask for than for some programs' startup to be delayed? Even the free Startup Delayer will tell if there is any new program in Start and ask if that is okay (if I want it to). What more would I need?
 :tellme:

---

tomos @ I have half of my programs starting in one big crowd, and the other half spread widely over five minutes, because I need a lot more memory (yeah; me too, but I was talking about the PC) to have the bunch starting any faster. Some will want the starting procedure to be done as fast as posible; but I want it to be as steady as can be, so every program will display their icon in the systray. It is my experience that I can easily make the startup procedure be a lot quicker, but not as safe. For excample; Outlook is quite stable, but I have given it four plugins that are making the combination weak. Therefor it has become important to me that Outlook must have extraordinary good time to start - safety first. This is not science but experience. Well; see for yourself:

Curt, you could shave some seconds of your start time if you give the heave-ho to the QuickTime and the Adobe services. Not that they are needed, unless you have a specific reason.

I'm interested in Curt's question about Chameleon (and I apologize if it's actually been answered - I'm in Belgium and it's early am here and I've yet to have any coffee!): will Chameleon allow me to start programmes in a certain order without having to specifiy the delay that occurs between them (is it smart?)?
Title: Re: My favorite software! What's yours?
Post by: Grorgy on June 30, 2007, 01:50 AM
while i havent actually tried it there is the option to start a program after another, and to give a delay before starting it, soooo i dont know about smart but it will do as its told  :)
Title: Re: My favorite software! What's yours?
Post by: Grorgy on June 30, 2007, 04:03 AM
Ok, i tested it on my laptop and i cant get the start after part of it to work, it keeps them in the list saying they are waiting for the condition to be met, of course i could easily be doing something wrong here, even tho it seems pretty straight forward
Title: Re: My favorite software! What's yours?
Post by: Curt on June 30, 2007, 05:01 AM
It is only "on paper" you can change the starting order without any delays. In practice they will still start in a bunch / all together at the same time, won't they. So I don't expect that to change anything, or even be smart, as you so elegant put it.

Chameleon will alter the starting order if you want it - with specified delays. The advantage is that 1) I can have Webshots start before EartWatcher which again will start before Desktop Icon Toy (with the delays carefully adjusted); all giving a fancy animation on the desktop during startup. And 2) I can defrag before auto-backup and 3) I can have the MASH figure Becky jump up and whistle for me, to tell that Outlook has performed the send/receive routine and my PC is ready to go.

But again; I can do all that with the free Startup Delayer too.
So other than because of any problems caused by mis-matching:
WHY choose Chameleon over the free Startup Delayer?  :tellme:
Title: Re: My favorite software! What's yours?
Post by: Grorgy on June 30, 2007, 05:14 AM
I chose it because the free startup delayer DID NOT WORK for me, if it had i wouldnt have got another one.

Yes windows XP SP2 (one is pro, one is home) and it wouldnt work on either one. well not properly, it started them up but all the startup options for each program had gone.  I tried the chameleon one just to see if it worked, and it did, and with a 30% discount i decided to get it.

Great thread. Thought I'd add my 5c given I post so infrequently yet get so much out of others' posts.

Apps I love and couldn't do without:

Directory Opus - explorer replacement. The first thing that gets installed. So much tweakability it makes my brain hurt (in a good way!). With the latest version I shelled out for the USB license as I can't go without DOpus when using someone else's machine.  :-*

RoboForm - password 'enterer'. Wonderful app! Saves having to remember passwords for web sites you only visit every few months, as well as automatically filling out form information when signing up for sites. Plus you can securely store any textual information you like (license keys, etc). Integrates nicely with FARR - just add your RoboForm directory to FARR and you can launch automatic logins directly - a massive timesaver at work where there are passwords for almost every system.

Apps on the cusp of "love and couldn't do without":

AutoHotkey - hotkey util. The more I use it the more I like it. I've only just started to delve into it a bit more over the past couple of months but it seems that everything I think I'd like it to do...it can!

Find and Run Robot - launch util. Only started using this in the last couple of weeks but what a time saver. I used to leave a lot of documents open on my machine so I could access them regularly but with FARR I can free up that RAM by just launching them when needed. I can launch FARR, key in the doc alias, and load the doc in only slightly more time than it would have taken to locate the open doc on the desktop and swap to it.  :)

Firefox - browser. Tabbed browsing brought me to this and I've never gone back. I try to keep the number of extensions/addons to a minimum as my work machine has a limited profile space but it's nice to have so much customisability packed into such a regularly used tool.

Foxit Reader - pdf reader. Every time I load a pdf at work through Adobe Reader I'm reminded why I use Foxit at home. Sloooooooow versus snappy!

Paintshop Pro - image editor. Never got the hang of Photoshop and the price is prohibitive anyway. PSPro hits a nice middle ground between feature-rich and simple to use.

Taskbar Shuffle - let's you manipulate you apps on the taskbar/system tray through drag and drop. You know some people just have to have their email client leftmost on the taskbar, right?  ;D

Apps I like (a lot), and always install, but am open to the possibility that there might be better alternatives out there:

Ad Muncher - ad blocker. A bit of a carryover from my dialup days. Not sure if it's absolutely necessary these days but I feel a bit lonely if I don't see the little cow icon in my system tray munching away...  :)

Azureus - bittorrent client. Can't say I've tried any other clients but I've had no reason to as this does everything I want out of the 'box'.

Beyond Compare - file/directory comparison util. Doesn't get used with any regularity but every couple of weeks I find a need for it and it "just works".

Copernic Desktop Search - desktop Search app. On my work machine I'm using this constantly to churn through massive email archives. I struggle to imagine how I got by without such a tool a couple of years back. I tried Copernic on the recommendation of a work colleague and as it did everything I needed I stuck with it and never tried anything else. One day I plan on trialling some of the other big players but till then Copernic will do me just fine.

DBPowerAmp - audio converter. Nice explorer integration and plenty of plugins. I'm sure there are a lot of other equally good (or better) apps out there that do the same thing, but DBPowerAmp just hides away until I decide to right-click a file and convert it.

Easy CDDA Extractor - CD ripper. My version must be more than five years old but it's simple and reliable which is all I really need when it comes to ripping audio CDs. I'm certain there are fancier apps out there with a massive list of features but I guess I don't miss what I don't know!

File Box Extender - tweaks Open/Save dialogs to have a favourites list. Saves me a bunch of time when saving email attachments, etc. Also, being able to click a directory in Explorer (or DOpus) and having an Open/Save dialog 'jump' to it is plenty useful.

FreeDownload Manager - download manager. Replaced Star Downloader a few months back and wouldn't consider going back. I like the fact that when it detects a potential download you can click cancel and use Firefox/IE's internal download mechanism if need be.

Genie Backup - backup utility. I've got a fairly solid backup regime in place and GB is the tool I've settled on. Very easy to setup a schedule and from then on it's a one-click affair.

PSPad - text editor. I needed something better than Notepad but I don't remember why I settled on this. It's free, so I'm sure that was a factor, but the whole tabbed interface and various plugins make it a regularly used app.

TrayIt - allows apps to be minimised to the system tray. Sometimes I want to keep something open but not take up any space in the taskbar. TrayIt solves that problem.

Winamp - media player. Has stuck around since I first discovered mp3s many moons ago. Think I tried Foobar once but couldn't figure out an easy way to change the volume! I'm fairly certain I could find a nice 'light' mp3 player out there (and one that actually supports the media buttons on my keyboard) but till then tradition dictates I stick with Winamp!  ;)

ZipGenius - zip util. Used IZArc for a while but settled on ZG as it had a nice 'feel' and the developer responded promptly to a couple of requests I made.

Hmmm, that turned into a bit of a ramble really and probably didn't point out many apps that people on this forum weren't aware of already. Still, comments, etc welcome!

Are you sure you haven't got the "global hotkeys" disabled? I think those are disabled by default (go figure!).

(and one that actually supports the media buttons on my keyboard)
Are you sure you haven't got the "global hotkeys" disabled? I think those are disabled by default (go figure!).
Just go to options -> preferences -> global hotkeys and check "enabled" ;)

Well blow me down - a simple click of the checkbox and she's off and running! Much appreciated!  ;D

Integrates nicely with FARR - just add your RoboForm directory to FARR and you can launch automatic logins directly - a massive timesaver at work where there are passwords for almost every system.

ooh, cool tip!

Yeah, a nice side effect of RoboForm storing every login as a separate file. We've got umpteen portals/shared spaces/etc at work and it's so much easier to just fire them all off using FARR without having to worry about logins.

Very nice post BrokenNails :)

I used to use dbPowerAmp all the time too, but i've been disapointed with the latest version so i looked for an alternative and found Switch (http://www.nch.com.au/switch/index.html). Convert anything to anything very simply, i like it and it's free. The "plus" version offers a command-line ability that should very interesting with Drag n Drop Robot.

Also, i was looking for a nice alternative to Winamp and discovered XMPlay (http://www.xmplay.com/) (thanks to *i don't remember who* on this forum) and i love it. You should try it.

Thanks for the list BrokenNails! Fortunately, using the Opera browser has allowed me to forego Roboform, even though it's undeniably fantastic. Much like Vista's disk management allows me to disgard all those partition utilities — if I don't need, I won't install it. But AutoHotkey is "on the cusp"?!  ;-)

I've been enjoying GIMP lately, to my surprise. I've rejected it a dozen times in the past, but now I can finally get past the fact that it has no background workspace. That crap always drove me crazy, but suddenly it doesn't. Go figure.

You are a stronger man than I, my friend. :D
I almost lost my sanity with GIMP's user interface. I simply couldn't get used to it after PS. I hate that program with a passion now. :P

EDIT: ahh that GIMPSHOP thingie looks interesting. Gotta give it a shot, if they claim to have improved the suer interface. Mind you, I am not a PS power user by any stretch of the imagination, but PS has been relatively straighforward to use even for a novice like me.

Favorite software?  I llike everything I have installed now, but that would make a long list. But since my main foxus is security, I'll concentrate on my favorite security programs:

1.  Sandboxie - I haven't even seen a false positive, much less any real malware since I started doing all my surfing in a sandbox.
2.  NOD32 AV - I tend to forget it's there, until it announces that it has detected the eicar file from time to time.
3.  Zone Alarm Pro - I know some (many?) do not agree, but this one works perfectly for me.
4.  ProcessGuard Pro - If you don't let it run, it can't do any damage.

Non-Security:
1.  Lexitron - a Thai-English, English-Thai simultaneous translator.  Indispensible for my work.
2.  Ace Utilities - Cleanup utility that does a lot more than just clean.
3.  Mailwasher Pro - Great anti-spam program, but i could probably do just as much with the free version (which I also have)
4.  Copernic Agent Pro - Outstanding for research work.
5.  Gadwin Printscreen - simple to use and does exactly what I need
6.  Deskpins - makes programs remain on top if they do not already have that option

Windows XP SP2 Fully patched, ASUS P4P800S M/B, 1.5GB RAM, Intel 4 CPU 848P Prescott 3.2 Ghz w/hyperthreading.  3 HDDs

Hmmm, I haven't had any problems with dbPowerAmp myself. Does Switch have 'right click -> convert' integration into explorer?

Winamp may have had a stay of execution courtesy of jgpaiva's tip on how to get the global hotkeys working. That said, I might just give XMPlay a try and see what I'm missing. Thanks for the recommendations.

But AutoHotkey is "on the cusp"?!  ;-)
Heh, what can I say? :) I've only been using it for a couple of months and haven't yet developed a dependency on it. Still, I can see how it might be able to solve one of my more annoying work related problems (just have to find the time to do it) and if that's successful it'll most likely cross the "love and couldn't do without" threshold!

1.  Sandboxie - I haven't even seen a false positive, much less any real malware since I started doing all my surfing in a sandbox.
Have you experienced any major slowdowns when browsing within Sandboxie? I found that whenever I had more than, say, two or three tabs open in Firefox I would be browsing fine and then suddenly, BAM, everything starts timing out and the only solution is to kill the current sandbox and restart it.

It was almost like once the browser had more than a few concurrent connections going Sandboxie would just choke and not be able to recover.

It could well be a system related issue though as Sandboxie worked fine for about 3 or 4 months before this problem cropped up a month back. I have, however, reinstalled Windows since and yet experienced the problem again immediately.

BrokenNails,

The only slowdowns I have experienced in a sandbox is with IE7, which is very slow to load, and gets very sluggish in responding to such things as opening new tabs.  However, I use AM browser (an IE shell) where I usually have from 15-30 tab open,  as well as TheWorld browser, Firefox, Safari and Opera and have not noticed any major slowdowns in any of those.    I have not tried IE7 no-addons or gone through the ritual of disabling add-ons one at a time to try and pinpoint the problem (if that is the problem).  I am currently using sandboxie 2.94.23 (beta).
One of the things I like most about Sandboxie is if you post issues on the forum, tzuk or someone else will reply in very short order, and tzuk sometimes is able to fix a problem in minutes.  I've done a lot of beta testing with him and he is extremely responsive.  The only reason I've found to surf outside of the sandbox is when I want to do MS Updates manually.  And in case you haven't tried any recent versions, Sandboxie now has a Quick Recovery function, so when you download a program or file in the sandbox, you get a dialog immediately upon completion of the download asking if you want to save the file to the hard drive location where you saved it.  This feature is not enabled by default (for security reasons), but it only takes a second to enable in the SB Control Window.
What? Me Worry?  I surf in a sandbox!!

Volumouse [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]   :-*
Volumouse was yesterday updated to 1.5 and is now fully Vistable:

Version 1.50:

Volumouse now works under Windows Vista (both 32-bit and x64 versions)
Under Vista, there is no default mixer device anymore, but you can select the default playback and recording device in the component combo-box.
Under Vista, You can select more 6 channels, in addition to the 2 standard left and right channels.

Under Vista, changing the master volume doesn't affect the default left/right balance, as in the previous version of Windows.

All default settings are now saved into .cfg file instead of the Registry.

Added new options to "Use the wheel when" combo-box: Windows Media Center is focused, iTunes is focused, Mouse cursor is over the Vista Gadgets, GOM Player is focused, Alt+Shift are down, Alt+Ctrl are down, Ctrl+Shift are down, The cursor is on screen corners.

New option: Use hot-keys instead of the mouse wheel.

Added additional rule line (6 instead of 5 in previous versions...)

I have never used Ad-Cruncher, but IE7 w/o add-ons works a lot better in the sandbox than the full blown IE7.  I just tried Avant which has a lot more features than AM Browser, and it also works OK in the sanebox, whoops, sandbox  ;D, as does Opera, Firefox and TheWorld browser.

We talk very often about virtual sandboxes as if they are security devices. And I will say they are. But at the same time they might be classified as RootKits!!! This is the scanning result from another favorite of mine: RootKit Hook Analyzer 3.01 (was updated (http://www.resplendence.com/downloads) today):

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

One favorite that I tried but couldn't afford to buy was Registrar (http://www.resplendence.com/registrar) from the same company, Resplendence (http://www.resplendence.com/main) because is was €45. But during this July there is a 30% rebate. You really should think about it; I was sad I didn't have the money back then, but now it just may be affordable:

Registrar Registry Manager offers a very complete and safe solution to administrators and power users for maintaining  the registry on both their desktops and remote computers on their network.

Apart from common features, like those offered by the native Windows registry editors (regedit.exe and  regedt32.exe) this program offers a solution for backing up and restoring registries, fast background  search and replace, a bookmark editor with categories which supports key coloring and adding descriptions  to registry keys and values, detailed property pages, tools for easy navigation. The program offers multi-level undo so all registry changes can be individually undone.

The software offers a registry defragmenter, a registry monitor which logs l changes made to the registry by external programs as well as security editors which allow you to set access  restrictions on your registry keys.

Version 5.50 adds support for Windows Vista, includng the x64 editions.

Curt: RootKit Hook Analyzer requires a bit of knowledge not to panic :) - a bunch of programs hook kernel functions, since they really need to do that in order to work properly. Too bad you can only see the last hooking program, since hooks can be layered. There isn't really any reliable way to determine multiple levels of hooks, though.

Curt, what problem with Startup Delayer? I've just updated and there was just one issue with the "Adobe Speed Launcher" link, but exactly the same I experienced with the previous build. Otherwise the update is quite nice (the customizable colors and especially the buttons in advanced mode that don't change theirs location anymore).

The mentioned link file is quite cryptic to me, if anybody wants to analyze it, I can send both the modified (non-functional) and original (restored from backup) versions to analyze. If anyone else comes across this issue--the solution is to restore the link (it's in the Startup group of All Users) from some backup and it works again.

Anyway, if you want the previous build of Startup Delayer, I can post it somewhere for you.

My problems with the Startup Delayer update began at first reboot: one program had disappeared (and didn't start); one entry said the program was missing (but started all the same), and one entry said the program was all right, but didn't start. At PC shutdown there were all sorts of problems with programs not shutting down and popping up boxes to be clicked. Of course some of this may be due to the fact that anothe prorgram was installed at the same time, but I have removed that program and re-installed two others, and still the shutdown procedure is unstable.

yksyks; wow! - yes, please! I would very much like you to mail the file to (now deleted)

Thanks a lot!

Lite Personal is free, Personal Plus is €16 once, with optional €8.25 per year/updating. Lite is max 15 macros and for max 5 machines. The free lite is missing a few features like drag&drop, text storage, or what it was and I don't know.

One very fine feature is that you can use the hotkey * - which today's Giveawayoftheday, Typing Assistant, won't let you. This will make it so much easier to come up with nice unforgettable hotkeys.

Just go to Allgemein > Lokalisierung (General > Localization) and switch from Deutsch to English. But - as far as I know - the help file is only in German.

I tried a LOT of applications of this kind, but Shortcut is - in my opinion - by far the best one.

Hmmm...  Good software coming out of Germany, e.g. Horst Schaffer's programs (http://home.mnet-online.de/horst.muc/win.htm), but I think I'd rather wait until everything has an English translation, including the licensing terms.

One of my absolute favourites was just updated, rewritten from scratch:

Flashnote 3.0 beta (http://softvoile.com/flashnote/download.php?s=news3.0fn) appeared. Program is rewritten from scratch. So, in spite of it is thoroughly tested, it has -beta prefix.

I need to tell that program has features available only in 2.x branch now. I have not added anything important. Among new functions I can mention that now you can move Notes up/down on the tree. This branch will be further developed. There will be new versions, but I do not promise to make them soon.

Some features that will appear in future versions: support of portable mode, search through the whole database, automatic backup, Drag&Drop of Notes on the tree.

At the same time Flashnote is not going to turn into PIM.

Note for the users of current version:

Flashnote 3.x converts your database into the new format automatically. Backup of current database will be created before that. But all Settings you should make again.

Thus you can return to using Flashnote 2.3 and the old database. In this case infomation saved in version 3.0 will be lost.

In spite of the above I advice you make backup of the "C:\Documents and Settings\<User Name>\Application Data\flashnote\" folder (or where you store your database).

Hope you like new version. All your comments are greatly appritiated (http://softvoile.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1352).

And, may I add, it still pops up like a flash...

Absence of "search through whole database" would be a deal-breaker for me.  As things stand, Horst Schaeffer's MemPad (http://home.mnet-online.de/horst.muc/wmem.htm) has all those features (as far as I understand them) except drag & drop.  That is - small, free, fast, portable, hotkey to toggle between full screen and tray, search entire database, and you can encrypt your files if you want to.

oh my! I just emailed the author of flashnote to suggest the global search feature and he/she promptly replied that he/she will add it in the next release.

Mempad's lack of unicode is a deal breaker for me though. And the author said it was an incredibly hard thing to implement it in mempad and couldn't promise it in future release.

Integrates nicely with FARR - just add your RoboForm directory to FARR and you can launch automatic logins directly - a massive timesaver at work where there are passwords for almost every system.

I added the place my passcards are stored, and when I type donationcoder in and click the rpn file it launches RF as if i wanted to EDIT the passcard. Is that they way you meant, or is it possible to have FARR launch the site and RF login with the passcard?

Sorry 'bout the late reply - no doubt you've figured it out already, but if not:

You just need to go to RoboForm Options | Login Browser and check the box for "Default Action for RFP file (Passcard) is Login".

Unicode doesn't bother me, but if you use other than European languages, I suppose you have little choice  :(

Did you look at the minipad2 mentioned in this DC thread? (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=12354.0)  I don't know it has Unicode, but it's made in China, so presume Unicode is necessary.  I can't access minipad2's Web site at present, though.

It is my sad experience that Unicode is not Unicode... I have tried many programs written by non-English Europeen or Asian authors, but never the less many didn't FULLY support Unicode, even if characters from their own language were supported. Apps from German Horst Schaeffer supporting the special German character ß all right but not the special characters æøå from the neighbor language Danish, is just one example.

Sounds like those programs haven't been Unicode then, Curt. It's funny to see programs that are mostly Unicode, but fail on things like capitalizing non-ASCII characters (like æøå).

We now know that MemPad both supports Unicode, and has Drag&Drop.

I am very sorry for assuming that because I once tried a program from Horst that didn't support Unicode, then none of his programs did. I was wrong: ALL his programs for Windows 32 BIT supports Unicode! Sorry I implied otherwise - and Thanks to rjbull for the PM!

... Actually, all  my Windows programs support all characters that can be found in Charmap.exe (the programmer does not have to take care about this). And MemPad, for example will change "æøå" to uppercase without problems.

Windows also supports character sets like Greek or Russian in single byte, non-UNICODE mode (many MemPad users), but UNICODE, of course is absolutely necessary, if you want to mix different character sets. My windows programs even work under a chinese emulation (though there are some problems with search functions..)

My old DOS programs, however, are limited to the DOS character set, and uppercase functions are somewhat limited.
-email from Horst Schaefer

Other than that I think MemPad is the strangest program I can think of. You have to forget everything you ever thought you knew about how to create a note, in order to use this weird program! Or were all of my problems with MemPad maybe because of unavailable hotkeys, or my unstable PC? Hmm...

I use mempad (http://home.mnet-online.de/horst.muc/wmem.htm) as my all-round note-taking thingie, and don't think it's strange at all. Its text-only approach fits my needs completely.

The latest version has customizable hotkey support (if for for hotkey you mean a shortcut to evoke and send back the application to the tray).

I didn't think I could live without Keynote's tabs, but boy was I was wrong.

However, regardless of what the program's author says, Mempad does not fully support Unicode. The romanian letters Ș and Ț (S and T with comma below) cannot be written inside Mempad, the software displays question marks instead (??). It's the sign that Unicode is not fully supported. From the notetakers only NoteCase and Flashnote are fully compatible with Unicode.

MemPad does not support UNICODE, I am sorry to say (I am the author).

UNICODE uses a multi byte code that covers all languages of the planet, and even allows displaying Chinese, Russian and English on the same page. For a programmer this is more difficult to handle than ANSI, which stores all characters in a single byte.

ANSI includes the standard English character set (first half of the 256 codes) as well as a set of special characters that can be configured through Windows' regional settings. The "Western" set includes all sorts of western european special characters (see Charmap.exe).

Windows programs usually handle all these characters, including conversions upper/lower case. For regions like Russia or Greece the "Western" set is replaced with a regional set, which works nicely, and still supports ANSI English, but you cannot mix Russian and German umlauts, for example.

Programs without UNICODE support can even handle Chinese or Japanese, because those Windows versions have emulations that support 2-byte codes and pretend it's normal single byte code. However that is likely to fail on memory string operations.

BTW: Another issue is the OEM character set ("DOS") that is used for Windows console programs ..

UNICODE is a big can of worms.

One big issue is that we old-school programmers are used to dealing with 'characters'. One character = one item displayed on screen. Unicode changes things around a lot, with terms such as "code points", "glyphs", ... and even when you use UTF-16 encoding (windows' unicode format), one 16-bit isn't necessarily enough to display one glyph on the screen.

To make matters worse, things like comparing strings for equality becomes very hard - should the german ß be treated equally to "ss"? Some glyphs may look equal on screen, but be different characters. A glyph can be constructed by multiple code points in different order (this can be fixed via canonization though). And what about upper/lower casing? Not every language supported by unicode has a concept of this.

Too bad the entire world wasn't colonized by England, and all previous history/culture/LANGUAGE burnt :p

iphigenie: it was meant jokingly, in frustration. I really would wish that we'd have only one language to bother about, though, and English wouldn't be the worst choice for that. It's sane computing wise, and while there's a lot of exceptions and quirks, it's a very rich language with a very rich vocabulary (exhume always comes to mind - a verb for "dig up dead people", how crazy is that :)).

interesting choice, exhume - 1783, from Fr. exhumer, from M.L. exhumare, from L. ex- "out of" + humare "bury," from humus "earth." An earlier form was exhumate (1548), taken directly from the M.L.  (http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=exhume) no latin no french we would have missed such a worthy word  ;)

Current favs/must haves:

First off, we have the usual suspects: Firefox, Find and Run Robot,

Roboform - Since I got Roboform, I have actually followed the advice I always gave others and assigned unique passwords to various web services.  My Roboform password is pretty much a string of random characters that correspond somewhat to a sentence that was written on something on my desk when I first set it up, so I feel secure that it won't be easy to break.

Office 2007 - The more I use it, the more I like it.  I can't work efficiently with earlier versions now that I am used to the ribbon.

It's the summer, so I have lots of time to play games...

Do you mean, you have a master password for Roboform that then runs different passwords for different services; or, that you've assigned them all different passwords in Roboform as well?  I thought the former approach was usual.  If the latter, how do you remember them all?

I have one master password for Roboform and unique passwords for various web services, accounts, etc.  Yes, that's the usual way to use Roboform, but before I started using it, I just had a few passwords that I used for everything.

My current hands-down favorite is the oddly named Write Monkey.

From the website:
Zenware for full screen distraction free creative writing. No whistles and bells, just empty screen, you and your words. WriteMonkey is light, fast, and perfectly handy for those who enjoy the simplicity of a typewriter but live in modern times.

Write Monkey is a writer's tool.  It comes up as a blank screen that you can type on. But beneath that simple interface there are a host of features just a right click or keystroke away. Mouse or command key - the choice is yours. (F1 brings up the help screen. See below)

(This screenshot shows the fullscreen view reduced to a window. It can be toggled back and forth by hitting ESC F11)

There's even a feature to turn on a typewriter sound for those of us old enough to appreciate the crutch that old clickety-clack provides.

Does not require installation. Just unzip to a pendrive (or the directory of your choice) and get writing.

My current hands-down favorite is the oddly named Write Monkey.

I tried WriteMonkey ("WM") a year or so ago, but found it to be too 'odd'. Your praise made me give it another try, but once again it failed to please me. I made myslef acquainted with the strange GUI, and I accepted the various features, I guess you must call them. And I thought, okay, I can live with that, this could work for me! Then I told it to start with Windows, and restarted my XP to see how WM would perform at startup. At start, a message box popped up and told me that 'null' was missing, and all of my text was deleted and I had to start all over with a blank page.

It seems you have to gently close this program, before shutting down the computer? I didn't, and I won't. I just told XP to close, and left WM open. And because of this (?) the text was deleted. I find such a behaviour unacceptable, given WM has 'auto-save'.

I was also sadly surprised that I was not given the option to change a single hotkey - on my machine F12 will close down the computer.

I did find find some features about WriteMonkey that I like. Nevertheless it will now leave my PC.

Sadly, a lot of programs don't handle the WM_QUERYENDSESSION message, and thus won't save settings / open documents if the user shuts down his computer. The Bat! (http://ritlabs.com/) is one of those programs, so if you change settings you'll need to exit it before rebooting, or settings are lost. But I digress.

Mapping F12 to shutdown? Eek. On keyboards with a dedicated shutdown button, I always end up tearing said button off, after much cursing and swearing.

Theoritically it might work. In practise: in many cases computers switch off ATX power handling if you choose such options. I've tried this option but each time it works for keys but gives "Now it is safe to switch off computer" message for standard shutdown. The only way to have both functionalities (no msgs, no keys) is to rip off the last ones.

And for university times: because of some admin's idea to take off privileges from ANYONE (even IT students), it was impossible to do what you advice.

if the message is displayed then either the power supply is not ATX-compliant or APM support has not been enabled in the BIOS. because iirc ATX was designed to enable users to shut-down from software-side instead of the pseudo-shutdown in the AT chassis where the message is displayed. on another note, public computers are on a different spectrum altogether. ;)

Sorry it didn't work out for you. I think the thing that has to be kept in mind about software like this is what audience (and intended use) it is attempting to address. I would hesitate to characterize WriteMonkey as a text editor per sce. It is intended to be a tool for writers who are looking for something to facilitate a practice known as "writing hot" or "writing in the zone." It's basically just for brain dumps. Go outside that audience/usage and the program is sadly lacking in many respects. Everybody in my writer's group (including the techno-weenies) loves it for getting a raw first draft out of their head and onto the page. After that it's MS Word all the way.

As far as "strange" GUIs go, WriteMonkey pretty much borrows from the venerable XYWriter - an old DOS dragon that was extremely popular (or at least widely used) by journalists, writers, and other odd types back when dinosaurs roamed the earth. In short, it doesn't have a GUI. The thing that is interesting about command-key driven apps is that they are somewhat difficult to learn - but easy to use once you do. Contrast that with many mouse/menu oriented apps that are easy to learn, but less convenient to use once you master the basics - until you start using the hot-keys!

I'm running Writemonkey under Windows. :)

I have quite some favorites :

- Directory Opus (not free)
- Faststone Image Viewer
- FastStone Capture (not free)

but by far my ultimate favorite is the free Proxomitron.
It's a local proxy with the power of 10.000 AdBlockPlus's and countless other great things that can make your surfing so
much more enjoyable. You should combine it with the filterpack from Sidki.

Proxomitron download + sikdi filter pack download here : http://sidki.proxfilter.net/prox.html (http://sidki.proxfilter.net/prox.html)

Fantastic help forum here : http://prxbx.com/forums/index.php (http://prxbx.com/forums/index.php)

On first sight people would think this is hard to install/use, but when you read the documents it's a piece of cake. :)

Proxomitron download + ...

ATTENTION! When Proxomitron is warning: "Demo  showing a couple of events that may trigger popups and other things. Not for use without Proxomitron" - they mean it!! 220 windows will pop up, if you click 'allow', without Proxomitron installed !!!

It was almost funny...

Almost.

220 popups ?! You mean that test page on the Proxomitron page ?
Yeah, they're not malicious at all, it's just a test page, but yeah you need to have Proxomitron running before trying this test lol  :D

Anyway, I hope there are some fellow users here using the power of the Proxomitron.
The original author has passed away a few years ago, but his little gem is still of immense value against the majority of internet- and spam clutter on so many sites. :)

Yes, Proxomitron has stayed on my system as well, though that also means I can't find a replacement after all these years.
