Title: Scrolling capture is not working
Post by: viccim on May 05, 2011, 03:29 PM
I am at the lastest version of Screenshot Captor 2.93.01.
It was working in my old computer with windows XP.
Now I am on Windows 7 Pro and it takes a snapshot of the screen but not going down.
Any idea to make it work again.

I have been remiss in not updating the scrolling window capture code.. I have been working on another of my programs lately (Clipboard Help+Spell) and will get back to Screenshot Captore very soon.  Can I ask what program you are trying to do a scrolling capture from?

Hi, when do you think to fix the problem of scolling capture?
I bought Screen Captor to do that and now I can't use it.

Scrolling captures haven't ever worked for me in Screenshot Captor. I have reported this a number of times, as follows:

In December 2007:     https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=11312.msg92920#msg92920
 (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=11312.msg92920#msg92920)
And in July 2008:     https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=14027.msg121297#msg121297 (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=14027.msg121297#msg121297)

And in May 2009:     https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=3474.msg164701#msg164701 (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=3474.msg164701#msg164701)

I have tried a scrolling screen capture with every update released since December 2007 without success.  (I'm like that stupid dog who keeps trying to push that same rope around, wondering why it doesn’t go where I push it.) I am now thinking that maybe I should stop. Somehow I don’t think it will ever work in my lifetime...   Agreed?

Thank you,

Jim

not agreed.  i apologize for how long its taken for me to get to it -- but i've just finished finally improving some of the object drawing in screenshot captor and hope to get to scrolling capture now.  it's just such a finicky thing it's hard to be motivated to work on it.

mouser, since not everyone has this happen - it seems to be system-specific - and you hadn't been able to actually replicate this behavior, I didn't think it was even available for you to fix. Have you now been able to produce this behavior?

BTW, when I say "system-specific" I am thinking hardware-related, with the graphics card the most likely suspect. I have a fairly high-end (though kinda old) card: nVidia GeForce 8800-GT, and it seems to be designed to be in conflict with as many other programs/drivers as possible. Boy, when nVidia sets out to screw something up they always show that they are the best in that category!

Thanks!

Jim

mouser, since not everyone has this happen - it seems to be system-specific

Let's see if we can find out if that's true with a simple test using a simple program like notepad.

open up notepad and paste the following text into it:
111
222
333
444
555
666
777
888
999
000
111
222
333
444
555
666
777
888
999
000
111
222
333
444
555
666
777
888
999
000

Now set your notepad window such that only the first 000 through 999 show, something like this:
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Now do a scrolling capture on the inside of the notepad contents, and see if you get the proper result, which i get:

I get doubling up of some numbers, presumably where it's joined?

also, I notice the last 2- 3- 4- 555 are repeated

Win7 pro 64 bit - if you need hardware details just ask (I'll have to check)

Another confirmation, Win7 x64 with default Aero theme.

It duplicates just below the last thing that is visible, I had 333 as the last line visible from the first page (red arrow), and that got duplicated, and it shifted 666 and 777 out of view at the blue arrow. Case of +/-1 perhaps?

This behaved much nicer than it usually does in a browser - FF, Chrome, or IE - but the numbers are messed up here also. I started to mark them but there are more than I thought. Take a look:

yes, in this example anyways, it is - I get a perfect screenshot with the "Windows 7 Basic" theme.
Problem screenshot was with an Aero theme.

EDIT/ with that theme, or with Classic theme, I'm unable to capture this page (sorry!)

Tomos, that is an important clue.

So can i confirm -- with "windows 7 basic" you get a good capture, but with other themes you don't?

Yes, with "windows 7 basic" theme, I got a good capture [1] earlier of those numbers, using your instructions, in notepad. I just did another -same theme- [2] which isn't quite as good (see the white spaces, but no doubling up of numbers).

[1][ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

[2][ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

only difference between the two was the time of day, and that I made the Notepad window narrower for [2]
Title: Re: Scrolling capture is not working
Post by: mouser on September 06, 2011, 08:04 AM
The extra white space cannot be solved -- it has to do with the way notepad displays windows contents and never displays a partial line at the bottom.

Ok so this is a key clue for me that my code is not properly accounting for windows 7 themes..  I will try to fix that first, and then see what problems remain for people after that.  At least that gives me a much narrower scope of issue to focus on for now.

Thanks

now that I think of it, there was white space below the last visible number - I think I reduced this for the first shot but not for the second.
Good luck on your journey into the autoscroll  :D

right.  so to get a smooth shot with no whitespace between pages you would just shorten the window height in notepad until there was not so much extra whitespace at the bottom of the window.

Title: Re: Scrolling capture is not working

That might solve one problem, but if you look at the links above to my prior posts about the scrolling capture issues, they started in December 2007 and there is another there from July 2008. That is well before anyone was running Windows 7, so my guess is that the themes are just an ancillary problem on top of the base problem. Of course I don’t know what the base problem is; just that I still suspect nVidia GeForce graphics cards and/or drivers, possibly also involving hardware acceleration.

Thank you.

When do you expect to solve that problem???

Without scrolling capture, your software worth nothing for me.

I've basically been working on everything *but* scrolling capture in SC -- but i've run out of other things so it looks like next up is updating scrolling capture to work better especially on win7.

Title: Re: Scrolling capture is not working
Post by: J-Mac on October 03, 2011, 09:58 AM
I still think that - other than the obvious re-ordered numbers problem from the Notepad experiment - my scrolling capture is related to my nVidia GeForce 8800GT card which has never played nice with anything, especially my Asus A8N32-SLI-Deluxe Mobo. I have had various graphics problems ever since I got this computer with that combo. (Although somehow Snagit has never had a problem with scrolling captures on this box. Weird!)

Thank you.

Jim

One thing people could do to help me is see if scrolling capture works AFTER you go into your windows display settings and turn off Aero Glass theme (select something like Windows Basic theme).

Ok i'm about 50% done with the rewrite of scrolling capture.
Title: Re: Scrolling capture is not working
Post by: mouser on October 05, 2011, 08:17 PM
Ok so let me talk a little bit about my scrolling capture plans.

I have rewritten the scrolling capture code from scratch, and i currently have a FRAGILE version of it working with the new method.

I would appreciate those especially on windows 7 who tried the notepad test and it failed, to give this new alpha version a try:
https://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/screenshotcaptor/downloads/alpha/ScreenshotCaptor.zip

NOTE: This zip contains a replacement exe that you need to copy into your existing SC folder over your existing exe file -- it will not work if you just try to run it on its own because it lacks the other files SC needs to run..

Now, do *not* expect this to work on all kinds of advanced windows like firefox, etc.  I'm more interested if it works on notepad and when/why not.

The old method used a windows api drawing trick to figure out where to stitch images; the new method uses what i believe most modern scrolling capture tools now use -- which is basically to align images based on overlapping content.

The current code does a reasonable job in lots of cases, but is not perfect.

So here is what I plan:

Rather than stitching on the fly with hard-to-configure options, I propose to add a serious best-in-class scrolling capture function to Screenshot Captor.

Basically when you select that you want to do a scrolling capture, a dialog will come up with some (remembered per application) options that will let you tweak various aspects of the scrolling capture attempt -- necessary since different programs need different techniques.  This will also allow user to customize some other options for the capture -- region area, max # of pages,

SC will then capture a large number of images to disk, and then stitch them together AFTER THE FACT, rather than on the fly.  This should enable one to do a much better job of automatic stitching, as well as allow post-capture tweaking of the stitching settings, which should let you tweak up any misalignment, etc. and choose to break up the stitched image into multiple images if it's too large, etc.

So anyway, i'm going to play with this new on-the-fly stiching for a bit, and then return to write the deluxe scrolling capture later.
Title: Re: Scrolling capture is not working
Post by: mouser on October 05, 2011, 08:46 PM
Note:
The current code scrolls by pages when capturing -- which is very fast but can make alignment more difficult; i will probably be messing with this in upcoming test versions to try to balance speed vs accuracy.

I'm a brand new user who downloaded Screenshot Captor on the strength of the recommendation by Gizmo's TechSupportAlert website.  I need the scrolling capability in order to capture application screens.  The first thing after completing the download (and donation) was a scrolling capture of Firefox.  The first time it was bad with duplicate images that didn't match up.  The second time it was worse -- it got hung and never stopped capturing.

After reading the forum comments suggesting that scrolling was not a high priority, I was discouraged.  I'm glad to see that you're going to focus on this feature and I'd like to offer my encouragement to you in hopes that you'll get the scrolling working soon.  Good luck!

Craig

(it's just a new exe, not a full setup).

so, should we simply replace the exe in a current install?
Or does this work on it's own? OK it works on it's own I think:

I tried to follow instructions on previous page
https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=26648.msg260751#msg260751

With an Aero glass theme (win7 x64):

Restart SC.
Classic theme:
exactly same results

the numbers are perfect at least  (not sure why it got doubled up)
Title: Re: Scrolling capture is not working
Post by: mouser on October 06, 2011, 07:26 AM
Why it got doubled up:

Screenshot captor thinks the horizontal scrollbar is telling it that the image is multiple windows wide, so it's trying to scroll sideways and stitch horizontally as well as vertically.

But the line numbers are messing it up since those don't scroll.

The way to handle that is by giving the user more control to specify the region containing scrollable content.

That will come in the final Deluxe scrolling capture solution.

But scrolling is looking good

Maybe Screeshot Captor is a fine program for many of its features.  By now, seems everyone knows scrolling capture doesn't work in browsers - esp. Firefox.  I'm using latest SC 2.102.01 in Vista x64.

Something has changed in late versions of browsers (FF), where screen capture prgms (even old last free ver of FastStone) that handled scrolling capture perfectly in FF v3.6x & maybe v4 , no longer can - even updated prgms that claim to.  Then FastStone stopped scrolling capture (so did other similar prgms), then w/ another FF release, FastStone scroll capture worked again, then quit for good w/ another FF release.

Re:  current SC - please don't say that it supports scrolling screen function- it doesn't.  List it as a beta feature, or something - up front, before users jump thru all hoops to use it.  I understand it may be difficult to write the code so it will handle scrolling browser screens, but as a matter of being up front on "features," don't advertise it will when it won't.  Scrolling capture in FF 7, it flickers, flashes, stands still, scrolls down a bit, flashes / flickers some more, then after ~ 1 min captures only the viewable screen.

I'm perfectly fine w/ having to get a license - eventually - to use SC.  But, the effort one must go through to install, sign up, get the license only to discover it doesn't  handle some advertised features at all, that I often need is, uh, disappointing.

Other dedicated FF plugins "more suited to scrolling screen captures" have been mentioned.  Didn't see names, but assume one may be FireShot.  Maybe others I don't know of.  FireShot will do scrolling capture.  But in some respects, the free ver is a PIA to use.  I guess you get what you pay for, so can't complain too much.  I may have to pay for a prgm to handle scrolling capture.

Thanks.

i hear ya.. for a while it was a reliable feature.. then ff versions and win7 broke all that and it's been pretty unreliable for a while now.

As a very long-time registered user of Screenshot Captor, I do remember a time when this feature worked consistently well. But it's been a long, long time since then.

(Btw, as I recall, back when it used to work, it seemed to do more flashing and back-n-forth scrolling than the competing programs like SnagIt. But that was no big deal because it always produced a full image in the end.)

Anyhow, I just tried an auto-scrolling capture of a simple webpage in Firefox 11, and it failed to work on TWO LEVELS:

As I understand it, I'm supposed to press Ctrl+Shift+PrintScreen AND THEN Ctrl+Shift+click.

I definitely remember in the past -- when this feature worked -- the first keyboard command (or tray menu command) resulted in a red-lined frame around the webpage. This appeared with little or no mousing on my part.

But that red-lined frame no longer appears around the webpage. It appears as just redline toward the bottom of the webpage. And if move my mouse toward the system tray, then partially-obscured red instructions appear.

(I tried to get the frame to surround the webpage, by using my mouse like I would for a custom selection screen capture, but it didn't work. And besides, I shouldn't even have to do that. After all, it's a windows object or scrolling capture, so screen capture should know what needs outlining with the red-lined capture frame or box.)

Nonetheless, I thought I'd try the second step: Ctrl+Shift+click.

Thankfully, I'm not susceptible to seizures from strobe lights, or what ensued might very well have triggered convulsions. The flashing was extremely rapid, and it appeared to be both endless and pointless.  Finally, I clicked the escape key, and here, I'm happy to say, the program worked. It stopped attempting the capture.

I was a bit worried I'd have to restart my PC, because the graphics were only partially displayed. But with a bit of minimizing and maximizing of windows, all returned to normal.

Enough said. PLEASE, Mouser, fix this feature. Otherwise people will certainly move to other program for screen captures. And I don't want to do that myself. But at least for now, for scrolling captures, I must do that.

Steve

PS: I was just trying to capture www.abookapart.com -- there's no flash on the page, and nothing fancy at all.  (It was just for a little collection of webpages with exemplary designs or at least some exemplary design elements.)

CLEARLY, the feature fails right at the beginning.

Skas, what version of Screenshot Captor are you using?  It sounds like you are still using v2.

There are a series of videos on how to use the completely rewritten scrolling capture feature in version 3 at the bottom of this (https://www.donationcoder.com/screencasts/sc/) page.

FWIW that site captures great in IE9, I just chose a scrolling capture from the menu and followed all the prompts.  I adjusted the left margin out a little and narrowed up the right margin quite a bit (I didn't think keeping the scroll bars in the capture added any value).  I like the prompts, I do a scrolling capture so rarely it's nice to have the reminders...
