Title: *Foolproof* sware to import photos & make CD ?
Post by: tomos on November 17, 2008, 08:16 AM
Found a couple of threads about photo organisers but I'm just looking for something very simple for a beginner (computerwise) that ideally would:

I thought this would be a relatively easy one - so far, I've tried using explorer and Picassa and Nero (Express/Start Smart)

Import should, well, import. It would be a plus to be able to select all, none or any photos
Then re burning:
Ideally selection would be click once to select, click again to deselect. Option to select all/none
Then burn. Ideally multisession option

I can live without all the "ideally" bits - the simplicity and foolproof-ness is priority
Any ideas - two different apps would be fine

Only one I can think of is Kodak easy share which I know got an update lately - I'm wary of them cause there was lots of problems with it a couple of years ago but might chance it anyway

For organizing you could use paint.net.
For burning I use CDburnerXP.

http://www.filehippo.com/download_paint.net/

Also, to make a slide show or presentation you could use this VSO product and publish it to a folder then burn it to a cd. It's a freebie.

I thought paint.net was an editor :-\

Yes, it's more an editor then an organizer.
But it can be used for that task.

I think vsophotoonweb may be pretty easy.
You can choose individual files or folders.
The default viewer is your browser, since it's design is for the web.
But that could be changed with 'open with' I think.

Here's a sample I just made and published with vso to the desktop where it made it's own folder that I titled the album.
Then I put it in My Dropbox and this is the index link Dropbox gave me.

I have been collecting them over the years from flickr feeds.
I would have liked to have been at those places!
A couple I have.

A similar option to "Photo on Web" , I use the free Jalbum softwate (jalbum.net) to create web based albums both locally on the hard drive or over the internet.  It has lots of skins / layout templates available and supports multiple OS platforms.

Yeah, Jalbum is probably the better choice.

But I thought you could do it with XP's built in burner by using the commands in the left panel for each file in the folder window. They are stored in a temp folder till you are ready to burn them.

Trying to select images using Explorer and "Add to CD" or whatever it says is actually a scary experience. Plus is that you can add a few, then add a few more but then the tray icon which is the only known link to the future CD disappears regularly. Minus is the difficulty of selecting large number of images - so we gave up that route
As I say,
I found it very unstable - on the computer we were using at any rate
Add to that, the user (for want of better term) has difficulty selecting many files (I find it challenging myself if I want to select loads of files - one slip with the Control key and you've lost your selection)

Really I'm looking for two things -
one = easy import
two = easy file selection for to burn on a disc (also easily please)

DOpus has (I think) a power selection setting where you click a file it stays selected if you click another
Maybe I should ask in a File Manager thread if there's a free app that would do that

Ok, sorry, forgot your first post.
I find that sometimes it makes copies of the files into the same folder slipping on that dang control button.

Have you tried cdburnerxp yet?
It's simple to me anyway,
but it may not be what you want completely.

The person could just drag and drop the files one at a time, into a new folder (about as quick as selecting) and after burning, put them back where they were.
