Well thanks to Tweak UI which allows me to turn off all the icons and Skrommel's FadingTaskbar, my desktop shows nothing other than the background image when idle.

That said I'll therefore posts a few of my favourite wallpapers (all are from deviantART (http://www.deviantart.com/)):

Indeed most of the popular walls from the Abstract (http://browse.deviantart.com/customization/wallpaper/abstract/?order=9&alltime=yes) category I tend to like :)

All I have is the recycle bin.

Sorry.   :(

Top half is today's mess and my taskbar. (I could make a guessing game out of naming what all the icons are for, in order, and give out a prize to whoever gets the most right?)  ;D

Bottom half is with everything minimized. Taskbar is on autohide.

PowerPro (set to autohide), Rainlendar and usually a lot of icons. I cleaned up my desktop the other day, that's why it looks so tidy...

Nobody wants to see my desktop. Honest. Truly. Believe me.

I use it as a holding area for all the files and projects I'm working on it is TOTALLY full of file icons & a 1600 x 1200 desktop completely full of icons is truly a scary, uhh...wondrous thing to behold.

I used to be like innuendo, as im pretty messy by nature. But after trying to scan 343 icons because windows decided to re-arrange them "because it felt like it"  i decided to get organise, and minimal is now my thing. I now shudder and despise messy desktops, a bit like an annoying ex-smoker who down the pub surrounded by smokers.

With so many people showing their desktops full of icons I feel compelled to show how I launch programs. I use a custom start menu which is simply just a directory structure of shortcuts set as a toolbar on the taskbar.

Here a pic of it currently:

Install the UXTheme patch (5.0), and you can use any of the visual styles found on various locations throughout the web. www.deviantart.com is my favorite for finding them :)

Icons and passwords both drive me crazy, especially when I have to recognize or remember yet another one.

The Start Menu (Classic) and a good file manager - who could ask for more?

My desktop is EarthWatcher (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=7089.0) - thanks to jgpaiva

No icons visible, except when I wanna have a little fun with Desktop Icon Toy v. 2 (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=039a8dc4f9dc9257ac824ef2f74167c0&action=dlattach;topic=6820.0;attach=14036;image)

Icons are hidden in Win2K Explorer and in PS Tray Factory (http://www.pssoftlab.com/)

Wait, wait, wait, are you telling me that you arranged all the icons in your desktop in a heart-shaped menu? Groovy! :P

So, although a hint of my desktop was published in another thread (a tough guy and some hilarious looking thugs blocked part of it), let's publish the latest version. It's still WIP, most of the icons will head for Recycle Bin Village, some software is not running as I have to configure something here and there and the desktop theme will change. The background also changes in every boot, thanks to Wallpaper Master.

@ Dirhael - your desktop is high class!

Would tell which apps are behind the various buttons and effects, please?  :tellme:

Thanks! :)

As you requested, here's a breakdown of the components that make up my desktop:

1. The visual style is a modified version of the default Vista Aero theme. I just didn't like the start "orb" so I used Restorator 2007 (http://www.bome.com/Restorator/) to edit it. I didn't start out with a unmodified theme though, I used this editied version (http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=570707) as a base. The reason for this is that this mod have modified the taskbar to a reasonable size, instead of the oversized fat thing Microsoft shipped. As for using custom themes, you can either patch the dll files that's responsible for the visual styles (http://www.codegazer.com/vistaglazz.htm) (free), or if you'd like something non-permanent you could check out TuneUp Utilities 2007 (http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/) (commercial).

2. The cover art etc. in the lower left corner is the excellent freeware application CD Art Display (http://www.closetosoftware.com/?s=cdartdisplay) (works with most players). As for the looks for it, I'm using the Celluloid Enthusiast (http://closetosoftware.com/forum/index.php?topic=299) skin.

3. The dock I'm using is Stardocks Objectdock (http://www.stardock.com/products/objectdock/) (free and commercial "+" version available), along with my own dock icons (just a quick PS job using the "Trajan Pro" font) and the Konfabulator Glass (http://gallery.thesecondscreen.com/uploads/K_Konfabulatorglass_bg_for_od.zip) background theme (don't remember where I got it from, so I've uploaded it to one of my servers).

4. The playback controls in the upper right is True Launch Bar (http://truelaunchbar.com/) (highly recommended!) with the Media Control Plugin (http://download.truelaunchbar.com/install/tlbmediactl.exe) and a skin called "Come Out". Once again, I don't recall where I got the skin so I've uploaded that to my server as well (http://gallery.thesecondscreen.com/uploads/Come_Out.zip) :)

5. The wallpaper is a beautiful vector called "Facing Life (http://snir.deviantart.com/art/facing-life-23357750)" (yes, it's Adriana Lima :-*) by someone calling himself "snir (http://snir.deviantart.com/)" over at deviantart.

If I've forgotten anything, let me know and I'll update my post!

Wow; Dirhael, this surely must have taken you quite some time to do!

I don't think I will be able to reproduce it at my desktop, because I am using Earth Watcher which is not a common wallpaper, but places itself on top of the actual wallpaper from Webshots - (so I would expect it to hide some buttons as well, but I have not yet tried this, so I really don't know - we will se later on) - :

Yes, it is beautiful. I think it is so beautiful that I am trying not to see it too often (but only during startup), in order not to get so fed up that I wouldn't appreciate it anymore - if you know what I mean?

I cannot give you the widescreen version, because Webshots then will force me to let it replace the one I have, but here is 1600x1200 Shafts of Light from Antelope Canyon, Arizona:

Yes, I know what you mean, Brandon. My kid sister grew up here in Copenhagen, when I was raised in the other end of the country. When I joined my Copenhagen part of the family as an young adult, I immediately started to explore the "big" city, and very soon I knew more about it than she did, though she had fifteen years in advance.

Oh and while I am here - I currently have a Simpsons Movie desktop image (the one of Home being speared on a fork by a demolition ball). Not that I can see him too much because of all the clutter that needs tidying up.

Changed my desktop slightly since my last post as I installed XP alongside Vista…again. I like Vista but some things just works better in XP so dual-booting is still necessary and I suspect this will continue for quite some time. Oh well, it just gives me an excuse to install even more applications :D

works fine for me on linux ;-)
it's called 'hinting' and also takes care of windows you resize to full-screen only are full-screen on one of the displays
for me it's done using xinerama (X.Org builtin), as to how windows does it, no clue. ;-)

Depends on your graphics card(s) - ATI have a utility that is supposed to sort that out (its called hyper.... something or other I forget). Don't know about nVidia.

I'm sure there must be a utility out there!

How about http://www.gis.usu.edu/unix/monitors.html for nVidia?

Or use a Matrox adapter (http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/gxm/products/dh2go/home.php) instead of multiple cards or dual head cards. I think MAtrox do a 3 monitor version too. This manages popup windows automatically.

How exactly are you splitting monitor signal?

If windows identifies your system as having 2 monitors, the taskbar should only be on the first mon and all windows would appear centered on the first monitor.

I am using an nVidia Geforce 7800GT video card with two dvi connectors.  The nVidia software lets you choose several modes, two of which are dualview which works the way you mentioned, and the other is span.  This is the one I am playing around with, the monitors are combined into one single wide desktop.  The problem I am finding with this is centered dialogs go to the center of the virtual display, half on each monitor.  So far, haven't found a solution to this issue yet.

I see, tekzel!
What i don't understand, tekzel, is what are the advantages of using the "span" mode.

Here's a solution:
<shaaaaameless plug>
Use DialogMove (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=3097.0), which moves the new dialogs that come up to your mouse position ;)

I'm glad you like it, curt!
If you find any window that shouldn't have been moved, just press F11, and it won't be moved next time ;)

Here's a solution:
<shaaaaameless plug>
Use DialogMove (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=3097.0), which moves the new dialogs that come up to your mouse position ;)
</shameless plug>

What I don't get is why a shameless plug for DialogMove, and not for GridMove.  Wouldn't that work well for something like that too, or do I not understand well what it does?  I don't have a two monitor setup, so I can't try these fancy different things.

EhEh... You're right, a shameless plug for gridmove would also be suitable :)
The difference is that with dialogmove, the used doesn't have to do a thing, the program moves the window automagically, whereas with gridmove you have to press a hotkey for the window to move. Also, DialogMove doesn't resize the window, while gridmove does.
Still, thanks for the publicity :D

FYI: DialogMove is not one of those fancy things,
it is very suitable for any single monitor as well.

I see, tekzel!
What i don't understand, tekzel, is what are the advantages of using the "span" mode.

Well, after having spent a few days with it, I have decided the advantages don't really outweigh the disadvantages.  The main one, is aesthetic... having a single desktop wallpaper that covers both monitors seamlessly.  You could site having a longer task bar, thus allowing more app icons, but if that is an issue you could just increase the height of it.

The disadvantages for me though, are numerous.  I didn't like dialog placement, on DualView setups dialogs pop in the center of the active or primary screen, not split between them.  I decided I prefer my task bar to be on on monitor only, not spanned across both.  Well, I guess that is mostly it.  Anyway, I am back to DualView now, and will stay with that config.  Here is an updated image of my desktop with my new skin I really dig: (click image for full size view)

If you want a big wall paper why not get a picture sized for span mode and then crop it into two pieces and put half on each monitor in dual mode?

If only it worked that way. :)  You set your wallpaper and it is duplicated on both displays, you don't have the option of setting a per monitor wallpaper.

Now that can't be beyond the wit of man! Why don't you put a request in the coding snack section and see if you get any takers?

Or even try a google search (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=Dual+monitor+wallpaper+utility&btnG=Search&meta=) - on the first page found these two utilities that may do the trick:

Nor do I. The closest Babylon came was this:

Nah - a Chad was a little guy looking over a wall - all you can see are is fingers wrapped over the wall and the top half of his head (usually bald apart from a few stray hairs). Like this:There is usually a motto of the form; "Wot no ..."

I just thought looking at your beautiful image of the Earth there should a Chad peeping over the horizon saying something humerous ...

"Wot no aliens?"

Anyone else go any ideas .... maybe we should have a competition!

I now have 2 giant autohiding toolbars:

do those widgets come looking that good or is that a theme -

so where does one get such nice clocks & temperature readings etc  :)

That are naturally that good looking. (although I may have tweaked color, size, transparency a bit)

On the left, from top to bottom:

iStat CPU (http://islayer.com/index.php?op=software)
iStat Memory (http://islayer.com/index.php?op=software)
(they have other similar style widgets too, and some for Vista sidebar)

SpeedFan Widget (http://widgets.yahoo.com/gallery/view.php?widget=37338) needs SpeedFan (http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php) installed (I have the older v5, I like the look much better than v6)
Yahoo Notepad (http://widgets.yahoo.com/gallery/view.php?widget=38244)

On the right:
Yahoo Calendar (http://widgets.yahoo.com/gallery/view.php?widget=38229)
Werewolf Monitor (http://widgets.yahoo.com/gallery/view.php?widget=38238)
Yahoo Day Planner (http://widgets.yahoo.com/gallery/view.php?widget=38231)

WAH - they are SERIOUSLY SCARY toolbars - no wonder you hide them!

While other people like things like FARR and Launchy, I prefer doing it this way.

I have had a giant hidden taskbar on the right side of my screen for as long as I have used Windows. I inherited my first pc set up that way and would go insane if it were any other way. It is the first change I make when installing a fresh copy of Windows on a PC.

I don't have a pic of the old P1 with the way it looked with Win98. This is the oldest I have, from about 2002 on my P3 with WinME:
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

This is from a series of screenshots I made with various toolbars expanded, so in case I had to reinstall the OS I could restore the exact position of every icon. (yup, I am a digital packrat that saves everything, including backups from a dead pc I don't even have any more)

App - your quick launch bars have always scared me - and continue to do so! Like Carol, I can't imagine remembering what all the icons are pointing to. To each his or her own though... Thanks for show us your desktop and thanks for the screencaps of your set up in the past - sort of cool seeing how it's evolved over time.

My XP notebook is running the Classic theme (with themes service disabled) so features a blue background and exactly one icon in the lower right of the screen: the recycle bin. Pretty boring. Sometimes I wonder why I bother doing this - what else is the desktop for but to provide quick links to oft used programs? I think I'm compensating electronically for the chaos in my (physical) office!

How do you remember what all those icons are?

I might not remember what something is called, or maybe even what the icon looks like, but if I can remember what it does I can easily find it.

Each row you see is for a specific type of software. Frequently used ones are on the line that shows, with the ones I use the most usually on the ends to make it easier to find them.

So, on my text tools row, since notepad2 is the one I use most, it's first....and Windows Live Writer is last, since I use that a lot too. The ones I don't use that often are on the second row which you don't see unless I either pull it down to expand it or click the little bar to see the rest on a menu.

And the top bar on the right side has ALWAYS been devoted to drive shortcuts, with the icons hinting at what is stored on them.

I get confused enough with the ones in my system tray (currently 31 - yes I know I should get rid of about 25 of them)!

I actually have a txt file with a list of all the tray icons that are supposed to be there (45), in order, just so I can tell if any are missing.  :-[

Some people can be too organised you know  :-[

Actually I would have a problem with your approach - sometimes Windows randomly decides to reorganise my Quick Launch bar so that things go into alphabetical order. I really don't know why it does that. With one bar it is quick enough to organise it back the way I want but if that happened to your system ....

Monitor 1: Static quick-launch shortcuts and toolbars, mostly.  Often I'll watch movies or TV full-screen on this one while I toil.  If I'm working from a customer's email, I'll often leave the document up here for reference.

Monitors 2 & 3: Primary workspace.

Monitor 4: Gadgets and timers, Process Explorer here nearly 100% of the time.  Also, spillover from monitor #3 if I've got a LOT of crap open.

Here's what it looks like on a typical day:

I finally go around to putting two video cards in my box. I had pulled the old one out when I put the new one in, but just recently realized I could have just left it in there. So just last weekend I put it back in. I currently have three monitors connected and the fourth will be connected as soon as I get around to physically moving it over and connecting it. how do I use them? pretty much like Ralf.

In no particular order...

1) Documentation / Reference Materials
2) communications -- email, IM, IRC, etc
3&4) IDE and tools plus the application I am working on itself while debugging.

I'll be 5120x1024 as well.

Wait, what? Never heard of such a problem with the gallery before... I don't really see how that is even possible, as am really just passing the image straight to your browser, so the problem is not on the server side...though, is it possible that you are running some security software that messes with the headers somehow...?

In any case, I rewrote the part responsible for passing the fullsized image to your browser and also changed the header somewhat, so please try again :)

I think you are, because Aaron's WebVacuum found thumbs only, at the 2'nd Screen site. If so, can you supply the store's address?

I've just spend an hour at Penny Arcade's forum's Wallpaper section. You have some gifted guys in the crowd. After some time I also found a few things that I liked.

Strange... I just don't get why the images won't show up for you. It really shouldn't be possible for it to fail, at least server-side. That said, I added an alternative "Download" link to the gallery today so you could try using that instead :)

Forgot to mention: a GREAT source for free wallpapers is DeviantArt (http://www.deviantart.com):
http://browse.deviantart.com/customization/wallpaper/?order=9&alltime=yes

This is one of the few sites I've been able to find multi-monitor wallpapers (http://browse.deviantart.com/customization/wallpaper/multidisplay/?order=9&alltime=yes) that don't suck.

Strange... I just don't get why the images won't show up for you. ...

Using Extreme Picture Finder, I managed to find 87 large picture files at cid=2 (http://gallery.thesecondscreen.com/gallery.php?cid=2) and cid=2&p=2 (http://gallery.thesecondscreen.com/gallery.php?cid=2&p=2) , but there are 94 thumb nail links!?

However, I have still not been able to find any large pictures, using IE7, FireFox 2, Maxthon 1.6, Aaron's WebVacuum, Internet Image Browser, or WebSucker. I have (of course) no understanding of  WHY  some will and some won't. The new download links gave me nothing: the server was not available, the various Internet browsers said, or they claimed the file was empty. I have tried many different ways to do it.

Being a man, and a single one of the kind, I would of course very much like to also have the large size pictures of Keeley Hazlle (http://gallery.thesecondscreen.com/gallery.php?pid=1878) and 1712 (http://gallery.thesecondscreen.com/gallery.php?pid=1712),  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ] , but these pictures too  seems to "contain errors"...

Hmmm, they don't contain a single error up here :P :eusa_dance: (God, I finally found a message to use the eusa_dance smiley ;D).

That seems like something wrong with your connection settings, Curt.

- sorry, but I would STILL like to have these two pics as well...

Keeley Hazlle (http://gallery.thesecondscreen.com/gallery.php?pid=1878) and 1712 (http://gallery.thesecondscreen.com/gallery.php?pid=1712)

I have uninstalled several addons, disabled many others, reinstalled this and that,
and still I cannot access these pictures. I am totally in the dark, on this.

55o ?!! Celcius or Fahrenheit?

Edit: I realize 55o Fahrenheit is merely 13o Celcius, so I take it of course is Celcius
- so forget my silly question - I could have checked before showing my ignorance  :-[
- it is just that after 6 hours my CPU is 43o, so I thought 55o was a lot!

Yes, i too think 55 is a bit too hot, so after taking the screenshot I started updating my system beginning with BIOS. :) Currently at 46, so hopefully it's a bit better now.

Since we're on the subject, this is a laptop and I wonder if it's normal that the laptop gets a little hotter than the desktop computer?

Oh, I thought your theme was HmmXP, the window icon in the Start Menu is similar.

The start button is just something I quickly made in Photoshop a while back and reshacked into a modified Vista visual style. The default Vista VS doesn't look all that bad, but everything takes up to much valuable space IMHO. It's like Microsoft GUI designers wants to pad our monitors back to the dark ages of 1024x768, and I hate it. Thankfully you can improve the situation a bit with a HEX editor (http://www.aeroxp.org/board/index.php?showtopic=9375) and Photoshop (http://www.aeroxp.org/board/index.php?showtopic=7216) :)

I have a somewhat strange desktop background, made it during Media Tech one day while I was bored in Photoshop. Call it urban if you will. I just took brushes and kinda went insane for 45 minutes. There are seriously like 30 brushes there. :P

Other than the background, it is all simple, clean, and I have an idiot-proof start menu. Plus a 3D user image (thanks to 3DUserPic).

Here it is a stunning Country Lake, 1255x855, 1.3MB, by Sergio Parisi

It is one of the most beautiful images I have ever seen; it somehow makes me  longing...

I have HDR rendering in my games, not sure if that is the same thing as what Curt mentioned, but if it is then I can also say that it makes a huge difference in the way images look. I have quite a few desktop wallpapers in my game screenshot collection that I use, and all of them have HDR lighting in them. You really notice the difference.

Also, an update to my desktop - I don't show icons much anymore due to my shoving programming stuff all over the desktop, so all I have is my ObjectDock Pro (awaiting the next version of CircleDock!) and the taskbar.

The background is an edited screenshot of my (favorite) game, Project Torque. I was drifting in my Subaru and decided to make an ad out of the thing based on the new TV commercials (I love the car, it really is fun to drive, regardless of being "simulated").

(The PNG was over 2.2 some odd MB, hence the JPG image format)

EDIT: That image does have HDR in it, although a bit hard to notice due to the effect wearing off with time (as to simulate the human eye adjusting to light).

EDIT 2: I need to post my Xubuntu desktop too, don't I? :)

I almost have a top music of the week type of section where I drag a few songs I like, or whatever's in my head that week so I can play them back in one click instead of singing them to myself like a loner. It's also a reminder of when I'm over a song since it's no longer on the desktop. Besides that, just a bunch of music production software and the recycling bin.

The huge pop-up will show AT ONCE, making it faster to use than many other application launchers. But the program is still very new..., and I don't think this scary sight should be the look of my desktop at any time. Maybe it is something for App103 ?  :P

I would have guessed the bike was a Vincent HRD Series. Then again I don't know my bikes that well. My English teacher is a proud collector of bikes manufactured between 1910-1930 (or thereabout). He also restores them in his free times and several newspaper articles have been written about him. On the day the school is open for anybody to see what professions you can study for, he would always put one of his collection there and would ride it for a bit as well.

These bikes don't have the performance of modern bikes (I don't mean they are slow), but sure make up for it with style.

Suddenly upon an urge this week ... nothing!

More specfically, toggling hide-show icons. When I am "working" (even if just life stuff) I have a visual icon grid system that interacts with my note taking systems. But suddenly I became overwhelmed at all the loose ends and just wanted to take a break! My visual reflexes respond too fast to the various concept threads! So I just "whooshed them away" (though I left a Sticky way in the corner so I wouldn't freak out the next day after sleep! )
