Title: Recommended Gifts for the Tech Savvy?
Post by: mouser on December 02, 2007, 03:39 PM
Since most of us here are into technical gadgets and stuff, i thought we might start a thread where people could post suggestions for gifts for people during this holiday season.  Or if you aren't into gift giving but still want to recommend some gadgets, go for it.  All price ranges.

I'll start off with a couple of my favorites:

Never mind tech savvy, how about one of these?
Spoiler
Vivat Bacchus Christmas hamper for £45,000

The ultimate treat for lovers of luxury food and drink is on sale at Vivat Bacchus, a South African-themed restaurant, delicatessen and wine bar in London's Square Mile.

The hamper has 21 bottles of wine and spirits including a Meinert Merlot 2000, which was requested by Nelson Mandela for his 85th birthday. It is said to be so rare that only a couple of dozen bottles remain. Six are owned by Vivat Bacchus.

There are also bottles of Romanée Conti 1970, at £15,000, Petrus 1986 at £790, Cristal, the champagne popular with free-spending footballers, at £400 and Richard Hennesy Cognac at £2,000.

The deal includes a three-day wine-tasting trip for two to South Africa, although the air fares to the Jordan vineyard in Stellenbosch are extra.

To accompany the beverages is a kilogram of Royal Beluga caviar and a buffalo horn spoon (£3,400), a leg of Joselito ham from Spain with beechwood and stainless steel stand, preparation knife and carving knife (£1,900), truffles and cheeses.

Nice stocking stuffer, Chris, but what about a suggestion for a big ticket item?

My daughter decided to treat herself to something this year:

A Zojirushi Neuro Fuzzy logic rice cooker ($164.55):

If you don't understand why someone would pay so much for a rice cooker, or what the heck 'fuzzy logic' has to do with cooking rice, here is a good article mouser found, that will explain:

Xmods Radio-Controlled cars (http://www.xmodsrc.com/catalog/).  They're detailed, realistic, and best of all -- customizable.  Body, suspension, wheels, drive system.  And inexpensive; Barricade (pictured) is $49 USD.

From Radio Shack, of all places.

RFID experimentation kit (http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/security/907a/) from ThinkGeek.

1001 uses!  Chip the dog and train your computer to automatically tell it to stay off the sofa.  Chip yourself and login to your PC without touching the keyboard, or scatter sensors all over the house and turn your PC into Big Brother.  Using the scanner it comes with, look for and identify embedded RFID chips in everyday products, and become afraid, very afraid.

About $99 USD.

Give this nifty No Raptors t-shirt from the xkcd.com store (http://xkcd.com/store/) ($17 USD).  Lots of other nerdly goodness there, some of it guaranteed to leave normal humans delightfully baffled.
