Living Room / Canadian adventures
« on: May 18, 2018, 01:04 PM »
Nothing interesting but a lesson in life perhaps. Would expect a lot more from Canada and any so called first world country.

Living in a big city suburb, Toronto suburb, definitely not rural. Phone service is down on several streets for 5 days and counting. Internet (DSL) is sporadic at best. Somehow internet, presumably because it uses 1 pair of wires not 2 is not 100% affected even though the phone company rep cites the issue as 'water soaked cable, trying to find location of the soaked cable'  Makes very little sense and the downtime length is down right ridiculous.

Who is this app designed for:

Many would benefit since this overlaps a personal information manager with writing tools.

The Good

The tree style categories that support both a calendar or daily journal format or writing kept in a "loose leaf" format which as its name suggest is like a white page.
The possibility to display a day calendar to a page adds flexibility in creating reminders and remembering any writing by date.
There is big emphasis on securing the database including entry encryption, password protection, lock up on minimize. Plus 'extended security' to lock the program after X failed logins.
Plenty of formatting options and support for icons, tables, timers and stop watch.
Word counts, spell check and thesaurus included.
Global or filtered (date, title, category, image description based) search add more usefulness. Search queries can be saved.
Bookmark entries, move between entries based on set dates (eg 1 year ago)
Built in back and restore option, auto save as you type.

Why I think you should use this product

The product seems stable enough to keep records and makes it easy to save your database in any location including cloud drives to share across devices as its license allows this.

Conclusions
The extended trial period makes it very easy to decide if price is worth it and it fits into a user's workflow. It is a well rounded information manager.

General Software Discussion / Windows Explorer crashing
« on: December 10, 2017, 01:13 PM »
Starting a while ago I get Windows Explorer crashing/restarting *most times* when I open an image, save a new file or image in any app, rename a file, when opening Windows Explorer window and similar operations but those are the main ones. System function fine otherwise, and for example exe open fine. During those operations there is a delay and taskbar flashes as if reloading and any open windows explorer window is closed.

Eventviewer shows:

No Windows or driver updates happened just when this started and I don't recall updating any apps either.

ESET online, Defender, Malwarebytes...all fine.
Sfc, chkdsk at boot....no errors
Drivers are updated as far as I can see (I used Snappy Driver Installer to check)

Googling 'windows explorer crashing' more or less end up at a page like https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-performance/windows-10-performance-and-install-integrity/75529fd4-fac7-4653-893a-dd8cd4b4db00 I have done those listed (except since I get no sfc errors I didn't continue lower in the page).
There are some mentions of indexing and network drives but those dont apply to this machine.

Any ideas?

General Software Discussion / Downloadable Office trial
« on: December 04, 2017, 01:36 PM »
Does a MS Office trial still exist? It certainly used to - and not just at Technet or MSDN - but Googling 'Office trial' seem to all now end up at Office 365 pages, at least the handful or two results that I clicked on. The official office.com site requires a key to install or reinstall. Can one not download Office trials for a self built computer anymore?

Living Room / Routing issue?
« on: July 14, 2017, 06:05 PM »
So around a month ago I noticed I can't get to DC and another site (and a handful more that I have discovered since)

My first thought was my connection, but only two (at the time) were inaccessible
Second thought DNS issue but why affecting two+ different sites?
After noticing that DC (and those other(s)) ARE accessible through a VPN I thought may be my IP is banned but then why would DC or a few unrelated sites ban my IP.
So finally I do a traceroute to DC (and another site) and 8 hops from me just after my ISP's addresses I get the dreaded ??? ??? ???

Other than calling me ISP does any body have any thoughts? I am afraid such a routing issue won't be solved by my clueless ISP, they are not going to check what is likely a routing issue beyond their servers, not even their own probably.

(In the past days I am checking DC through Opera VPN and Windscribe with no problem)
