Title: The 2015 10th Anniversary DonationCoder.com Fundraiser Cheer for Victory Thread!
Post by: mouser on March 23, 2015, 12:23 AM
In march of 2005 -- 10 years ago this month -- I set up the DonationCoder.com website and forum -- without much expectation that it would survive the year.  Mainly I was interested in being able to share the software I had written, and in seeing if anyone would donate to support it.  In the year before I had released a program and asked casually for donations and postcards -- and though the response was minimal -- the pleasure of meeting and having contact with a stranger who enjoyed the software was undeniable.  That was really the simple idea behind this site -- nothing very ambitious, just a way to connect programmer and user.

Fast forward 10 years.. The large numbers of downloads of our software, and the high traffic of our forum mean that our hosting costs are substantial -- currently $367/month just for server costs -- paid for entirely by small, optional donations from regular users like you.

The last time we had a fundraiser was in 3 years ago, in 2011 -- when we raised $14,239 from about 600 individuals.  For our 10th anniversary, I've set the goal at $10,000 -- a fairly modest amount I hope -- enough to pay for the next two and a half years of web hosting.

I set the fundraiser goal to less than what we raised in 2011 in recognition of the changing software landscape.. In the 10 years since we started.  Mobile and web apps are becoming ubiquitous, and the notion of free software has become almost dominant -- with consequences good and bad (constant advertisements and crapware).  But if you like what we do -- our software, our forum, our special projects -- it's really more important than ever that we have your financial support.  It's humbling to have to ask, but that's part of what this site is about -- being willing to ask for your financial support.

Having said that -- one thing I made clear when I wrote my article on the first year of DonationCoder.com (https://www.donationcoder.com/Articles/One/index.html), is that this website, the software and the forum, will not be going anywhere -- regardless of the money raised.  We're in it for the long haul and our software will always be maintained and free for home users without adware or unwanted junk.  But your donations help keep this site vibrant and active, make it more rewarding to improve, and I think help us to be an example to others.

In the coming weeks I will be writing more of my thoughts on the website -- both where I think we could have done better over the last 10 years, and some possible future ideas we might pursue together -- and I'll be asking for your feedback.

And lastly -- for today at least -- thank you all for 10 amazing years so far!  Here's to many more!

Do a ctrl+F5 refresh of a donationcoder.com web page to see the fundraiser banner with the thermometer showing the amount of money raised so far for the fundraiser:

Thanks for an amazing 10 years! I've never been an active member of any other website or group for as long as I've been a part of DC.

With other sites/groups, my life or interests often take me in another direction, if the community itself doesn't become hostile or stagnant first.

This place is really special! :-*

we need a function that will export a pdf ebook for a user showing all posts that have participated in, with their contributions colored differently.

on a practical note:
I wanted to give a couple of people donations - if I 'make a donation' does it all automatically go to the site?
or do I have do donate to the site after getting the credits, if you follow me.

Once you click the link in the email confirming your donation you get your donation as DonationCredits which you can disburse as you see fit.

thanks jesse (and Deo and I think I managed to confuse you Tao ;-)),
I thought that was the case, just wanted to be sure as I was planning a 'half-and-half' donation (half for the site).

So FWIW it's probably still helpful to actively donate credits to the site (after 'making your donation' - getting bogged down here again :D).

I was trying to think of some ways we might get some attention for the fundraiser..

What about having a random drawing for any donor/supportingmember to win some something special like a SMALL custom app designed to their specifications -- up to say 20-40 hours of dev time?  I'd be volunteering to do the coding.. Could be an Android app, Desktop App, Web App..  So folks would enter by submitting their idea -- and only those I thought I could do within 40 hours would qualify -- which will eliminate a fair amount of entries I'm sure.

Not sure it's worth the effort if most people don't have a (qualifying) idea they want coded.. In other words most potential donors may not be attracted to the idea, so maybe it's a stupid idea.

While I'm on the idea bandwagon (and Lord knows I am full of it, er I mean ideas):

Have you considered posting this (the Fundraiser) as an Indiegogo campaign? The Perks could then be various # of hours (max) for a custom coded app?

It would probably be a good idea to lower expectations by calling it "prototyping".

Tons of people should be willing to pay $99 for 10 hours, $199 for 20 hours, $299 for 30 hours, & $399 for 40 hours. Imagine, they get a custom job for $9.99 per hour. It wouldn't take many to smash that thermometer. And perhaps fill your Dance Card for the rest of the year.  :)

Followup offer to those who are close to completion within their time. They can choose to accept a working prototype with some functions working and others merely displayed as dummy buttons, or you can offer them an upgrade to finish for a fixed fee (or at your option) even a small royalty.

This idea is scalable with various coders contributing code snippets in their areas of expertise.

This could ultimately be made into a generic app where people chose which modules they want. But that would be outside of the Indiegogo campaign and likely far in the future.

Let me know if you have any interest. I have done an Indiegogo campaign, so can help with the setup mechanics.

You might want to "bend" the curve a little.

The "value" comes holistically. And I think you can get more with a couple more tiers. Something like $40 for the first 10 hours, because mouser/someone can smash together the ultra raw visual framework with maybe 2 buttons half working, and let the customer then sit there and "ponder" it. Sometimes once you see something, you realize "oh! I didn't know I wanted/didn't want X!" And then you hit a period of rework. I have direct experience with this commissioning stuff. I've long remarked that this site has one small flaw software wise, which I'll call a "Cliff Pond effect". You can get "snacks" for free - funny little app-lets that do something small and cute. But the minute it drifts into a "coding lunch" like this thread's ideas, suddenly it falls into a black hole and the customer doesn't know what to do. This fundraiser is one way to address that.

(On Cape Cod in Massachusetts USA, there's a pond in one of the state parks. It's all nice and sweet and safe for eight year olds, like 4 foot water... for the first 50 feet. Then it drops off the cliff literally, hence the name! It goes instantly to something like 15 feet deep!! So that means parents better have put an hour into planning ahead or there will be trouble!)
:o

But once you raise your sights into a "coding lunch" your vision increases. But if the initial part isn't as bad on "sunk money", there's less of a "threat" against changing their minds to change up something. Then let's say they really get going, and hit the main coding stretch.

But then on the other side, they should get a "volume discount" because they've committed to X decent sized chunk of money. So then they get a bigger batch of hours at a value price.

To clarify -- I cannot afford (mentally or monetarily) to take on work at those kinds of rates :)
The idea I was proposing was like a raffle, so that if many people donate, only one would win a prize of having their custom app created.
But i think the main problem with this is pretty real -- that  very few people would care about or have need for this "prize".

I was thinking of offering some specific required features in my already released NANY apps against some donation. But this is year end time in our country and I am too tied up with my project works, so I can not promise. If I get offer, and I find time, I will try to help DC here.

This is a huge and well-deserved vote of confidence in mouser, and in the community that he has fostered.

I think we're going for a record in generosity here, let's keep it up!

If all of us who gave already now added another dollar or two to the kitty… we'd have a really fat cat.

Congratulations mouser for the successful fundraiser and for the amazing community you have fostered here! It's really great to see the generosity of so many helping to keep this site going.

As for the fundraiser themed "LOLMousers," I was planning to make more of them for this fundraiser, but that site (cheezburger.com) has devolved into something that is no longer LOLCats. :(

Even more impressive than the amount raised is the fact that it's been raised from over 800 individual donors.
