There is a Mac app and web app called 5iler (http://5iler.com) that I thought was a good idea but since it is only available for Mac I thought I would make one for Windows.

I call it Note5. You have a nice color interface that when you click on a color bar it opens a note that you can enter anything you want. Notes are auto-saved on the fly.

Please give it a try and let me know your thoughts.

And I must say... thanks for turning me on to 5iler.  Yours is cool and a very well done clone... but having the web sync and always available no matter what is killer...  a simplified version of what I use now... simplenote.

Very nice!

One bug I noticed was that clicking on 'About' from the menu button in the upper left corner brings up the expected window.  But when I try to close the About window, the Note5 window doesn't take the focus.  Instead the Windows Explorer window from which I opened the program takes focus, and I wasn't able to get the Note5 window to respond.  This happened twice, so it appears to be reproducible.

(Win7 Home Premium 64-bit w/ SP1)

The more I use this, the more I like it.  It's probably the simplicity that appeals to me.

Here are a couple of things that would be nice to see, if possible:
- Ability to customize the time/date format inserted when F5 is pressed
- 'Stay on Top' option (with a transparency setting would be ideal)

One more bug:  Changing the title of the leftmost note isn't persistent.  After restarting Note5, the title reverts to Note1 (unless I manually change the title in the XML file).

That should have been fixed in the latest version 1.0.0.12 - Please download and try again. Make sure to not overwrite your Note5.xml file if you have notes in it.

Is there a keyboard way of moving focus from one note to another?
if not, would it be possibly to add?
one of the typical shortcuts would probably be good Ctrl+Tab or Ctrl+Arrowkeys or Ctrl+PgUp/PgDn (?)

I can confirm "Changing the title of the leftmost note isn't persistent" is still a problem - v.1.0.0.12

- Fix bug when saving Note 1 title
- Fixed small bug where title text would get cut off after going to full window view
- Allowed TAB in notes
- Option to hide/show scrollbars
- Option to have full window view default
- Support mouse scrolling when no scrollbars are showing

- Added transparency option
- Added version number to the titlebar

- Can now customize the date/time stamp

Thanks for sharing the program.  I wonder if it's possible to add control f search without killing off the simplicity? I have a small Treepad file of OS Tips but since no note program I have tried will import the .hjt file I thought I'd break it out to a Panel in note5.  Something simple like search with optional case sensitivity would move the cursor down to the appropriate area without scroll and read.

I like the idea.  I was using a plain text editor with a temp text file for quickie notes.  Naming the whole file after a single note I would forget the filename after a day or two.  :)

If the case sensitive check mark or lack thereof could be saved across sessions or even per panel would be super.  Or perhaps instead of an .ini setting just have 2 hotkeys.  Control f for insensitive search and a 2 modifier f hotkey for case sensitive?

That was a quick turnaround!  It works well, and I like the option for setting themes in the INI file.

Feedback on 2.0.0.0 (this time on win7 enterprise 64-bit w/ sp1):
- Selecting 'About' no longer hangs the program
- Transparency setting works well, but is reverse of what I was expecting (fully opaque at 100% transparency, fully transparent at 0% transparency)
- Themes show up multiple times (see screenshot below) - but this only appears to happen when Settings -> Themes is opened without selecting a theme.  Each time this occurs, it appears to add another iteration of the Theme names in the menu

Some suggestions (you've probably considered some of these already):

#1 only show scrollbars when text too long for window
#2 ability to reduce window to an ontop 'minibar'
#3 start with windows (I mean I can set it up - but would be nice to have in-app)
#4 ability to close to tray
#5 escape key to close window (to tray) - *or* to reduce to minibar (#2 above)

okay, that one was off the top of my head - I find always-on-top with transparency gets in my way eventually.
Hence the minibarbar idea.

But I think I'd actually prefer one key to close/minimise-to-tray (escape?) and a universal hotkey to bring it up again.

For mouse-people a minibar could be a good idea... reduce window size to shortest possible titlebar:

Re the darker note colours: it's difficult to read the text on them.
Could you make the background colour lighter for the darker colours?

(btw I love the default colours :up:)

If you would like to try a simpler alternative to adjusting the background color or allowing user chosen font colors I have a little function that returns either black or off white for text color depending on the background color.

The first "If" is the special case of a shade of green.  The formula would say use the white but it's just not easy to read.  So in that case I return black. I wrote the function so that users could pick a dialog background color from a dropdown list without having to pick a contrasting text color.

I like having hotkeys for switching between note panels, but I keep switching panels by accident.  The Ctrl+[arrow] key combination is a Windows shortcut for moving forward/backword one word, and my fingers do it without thinking.  (This isn't uncommon...my fingers rarely think before doing anything. :D)

Is this affecting anyone else?

It says 2.0.0.0. I double-click the program to run it, and it opens the main window and then a dialog with the error message appears. Pressing OK closes the program. I will try the current version when the website works again from here.

Shift+arrow keys is used to select text. Ctrl+Shift+arrow keys to extend selection by word. Check Guidelines for Keyboard UI Design (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms971323.aspx#atg_keyboardshortcuts_windows_shortcut_keys).

Alt-left/right might be a viable option, it's used for forward/back in history. Ctrl-PgUp/PgDn is perhaps better, it's usually used to change to the next/previous tab.

Ok. I like using the arrow keys :) so what I am going to do is allow you to choose to use either Arrow or Page keys and you can also choose the modifier key (Ctrl, Alt or Shift).

Thanks for adding the panel switching options!  It's really becoming a slick program.

A couple of items that I ran across:
1. R-click on a note with a URL, then selecting that URL gives me this error:  "Run time error 12 at line 268" - Then the program terminates.
2. Theme editor:  Clicking the foreground color for Note 2, then 'Define Custom Colors' - it looks like I'm changing the foreground color, but the background color changes.  Not sure how to change the foreground color for Note 2.  (Haven't checked all the combinations for all the notes.)

From the INI file, it looks like you are planning to make the minibar resizable in the future...is that correct?

Could you make it so pressing the next/previous note shortcut opens the first/last note when no note is currently open? This would give a way to open the notes from the keyboard only when running the program.

Also, perhaps a way to directly open a specific note? Perhaps Ctrl-1-5 to open note 1 to 5 respectively.

Also, I presume this by mistake: you have an ini file in the download (I just copied everything over before I noticed it).

Missed out on a couple of versions - great advances/improvements going on :up:

I tried changing the text colour on my favourite theme (the default one) - but (for my eyes and monitor at any rate) the darker backgrounds are too dark for black text, but not dark enough for white text. I've started using the Slate theme - it's got the lightest backgrounds I think. First panel is still to dark for my tastes.
Request:
one theme where the backgrounds are all relatively light.

Bug: cant consistently reproduce it though :-\

maximise the window => normal window => maximise window => step 3, etc.

@tomos - You can edit the themes using the new theme editor to make the backgrounds lighter. I can still make you a theme with lighter backgrounds if you wish.

- Fixed bug when window is maximized, it would restore to previous window state when clicking on a note.
- Saving to disk is now done when window is closed. Previously it saved when switching panels.
- INI file created only if one does not exist.
- Restore cursor position and selection when switching notes

It just keeps getting better.... :up:

On my machine (Win7 64-bit), minimizing the program causes icons to appear in both the taskbar and system tray (screenshot below).  Could the user be given the option of choosing one or the other?

The icon for the application in explorer is fine, the icon in the upper left corner of the app is fine as well, but the app in the task bar when it is running is a scaled up version of the 16x16 icon instead of the 32x32 icon. Here is a screenshot with the explorer, app, and taskbar icon for comparison again:

I've seen things like this happen before, and it's usually because Windows loads the first icon from the executable and uses that for everything, if it is not instructed to load the appropriate sizes (usually a question of doing multiple LoadImage calls and filling in both hIcon and hIconSm in WNDCLASSEX).

Just one question.  If I don't use the .ini from the download am I right in assuming the newer version of the program will write all the values it needs?

Edit: Never mind.  I see the .ini is not packed now. :)

v2.0.0.10 - On initial program open:  Selected Minimize to Tray, minimizing closes the program.  

If I close the program, then re-open it, the tray icon appears and minimize to tray seems to work.

enjoying the expanding options :up:
Escape and minimise to tray working well here (win 7, x64)

Changing notes with Arrowkeys is broken - Ctrl+Leftarrow works but not Ctrl+Rightarrow. Likewise when the modifier is changed to Alt. Likewise also when Pagekey is used (PgUp works; PgDn not)

When making a new theme:
let's say I'm using Slate theme. I click 'Add' and the new theme reverts to the default.
I'm wondering would it be possible that the new theme could be based on the current theme?

Tray icon:
YMMV but I find the tray icon is visually heavy on the side black bar. I'd recommend making both bars black, or making the black one something equivalent to red e.g. blue or green. (Not sure of my terminology there.)

@tomos - I found the bug and it'll be fixed next version. I do not think I understand what you mean about the tray icon, can you explain more? Ok, on the theme editor, I'll look into doing that.

Doesnt bother me, but I was wondering is it intentional that the right-click menu is different from the app-key context menu?
(right-clcik menu being more limited - tbh I dont understand the ones lower down on the app-key menu)

Yes. I made a custom right-click context menu so if there are URLs in the note, they will be displayed and the clickable. Was the best was for now. I may make the notes richedit controls but that will take a lot more time and a lot of code changes. I'm not wanting to do that at this point.

Thanks for your continued work on this.  Here's feedback on the new version:

DL'd 2.0.0.16 from the link above, extracted to a new folder, and opened the executable.  Didn't open...just received the following error:

Clearing the messagebox leaves no sign of Note5.

Note5Lite theme -
all text backgrounds lightened to about the same intensity (wrong word there? if converted to grey they would be roughly similar)

especially suited if you dont keep your monitor overly bright, or have trouble reading text on the darker backgrounds

I kept the same name as the default themes (as they just variations), just adding a 'Lite' - e.g. DirtLite, SeaLite, etc.

I notice that the plus symbol "+" disappears when I move from focus from one note to another.
This doesnt bother me much but thought I'd report in case


And a request:
would it be possible to make full filepaths into links in the same manner as weblinks?
e.g.
