YAY!!
It's finally begun and we have our wonderful mascot Cody once again starring in his own little tale of illness and redemption in the site banner (thank you Nick for the wonderful images).
I'll be blogging about the fundraiser, and posting updates about the planned release of something new each day, on:
- The fundraiser start page (https://www.donationcoder.com/fundraiser)
Help us spread the word about this to all of your friends and any sites you know about.
Let's make this a happy, celebratory event. And let's once again make this an opportunity to welcome new people into the fold, welcome back old members, and look forward to ways we can make the site more useful to everyone.
And also.. THANK YOU. Thank you to everyone who has made it so enjoyable and rewarding to hang out on the site. There are so many good people here who have made life more interesting and who have contributed to the site -- it would be wrong to try to name them. But it's to them that we owe thanks that the site is still here and still enjoyable to be a part of.
See you on the other side, and let's get Cody across the banner finish line early!
-
Don't be shy about posting on this thread -- we can use it as a public place to cheer on Cody as he recovers from his "illness".
Special bonus points if your very first post on the forum is to this thread -- just introduce yourself and say hi! This can be our silly thread to just jump around and shout and have fun.
-
:beerchug:
I bet you were up all night! :P
WHERE'S THE THERMOMETER?!!
-
I was up all night chasing Cody around the house to get him dressed up to take the photographs for the banner images. You know how it is with young kids and spoiled birds, they don't like to sit still for a minute.
-
A big thank you to everyone who has donated so far and gotten us off to a great start!

Here is my first blog post (http://nrrd.de/content/rise) about this fund raiser, featuring Baby Cody: http://nrrd.de/content/rise
The language feels a little bumpy to me, but I hope to improve during the fund raiser (I promised to blog about it once a day).
I had it written this morning, a few hours before it officially started :)
Here is the image I made this morning (while Baby Cody is still at my place):

I've not really been around this site in the last 12 months. Here's to improving that

Off we go!

I'm looking forward to this very much. Here's to making new friendships and renewing old ones: probably via some risque banter in the process :D
-
By the way, where's the Calendar of Events? Can we have a link somewhere please?
-
Thanks for the last 6 years mouser and everyone that makes this place great, very happy to have been here & looking forward to the next 6! Now lets make it rain!

Apparently, I have to do this.

Hi from Paris (France), keep up the good job guys!
I would tell it's almost (well... eh... not really but very close) a pleasure to give some money to you guys and keep this site as my fav place for information about software and also a *very* nice place just to hang out.
"Merci beaucoup" as we use to say on this side of the globe

Well the newsletter is going out, and like i said on the irc channel:
<mouser> these will be the biggest donations we get all month
<mouser> it will drop to a trickle soon
<mouser> the reason is because the fundraising email is going out now
<mouser> and it goes to supporting members first
<mouser> so what we are seeing now is all the very cool nice great people
<mouser> who have supported DC in the past
<mouser> responding like the awesome people they are.
-
How do I transfer DC credits to this particular event?
-
You should donate to the site :D
-
How do I transfer DC credits to this particular event?
Best thing you can do, as an active member of the forum, is send your donationcredits out to people on the forum to spread the love, and not worry about getting them into the site account.
-
/me yelps for victory.
Bought a new GPU last month and had to do a fair amounts of bike repairs, so couldn't donate as much as I wanted to - but I hope it'll help keeping the wheels spinning :)
-
Any way to donate via sms? I wanna use some of my phone credit to donate. Also DC via WAP is slowwwwwwwwwwww lol
-
i'm already a charter member, does that trump the "Lifetime Universal Deluxe."?
-
A search for something to control runaway CPU usage brought me to DC and Process Tamer in March 2005 as member #58. Where else can you have a program written just for you? Thanks, DC.
-
Charter member trumps all.. while still granting you no special abilities.. In other words, you are now in the only-semi-logical land of DC :)

Can't I be "DC Poet Laureate?" :P

This group of people is so totally awesome.
I just donated a reasonable (I think) amount [@Mouser it came through in my real name, as Joshua Schuessler] because I felt I owed it to the site.
Things DC has given me over time:
Lots of nice programs
Programs made up on the spot (I once had a coding snack made for me)
Someone to ask about any technical issue and its always been answered helpfully and no-one make you feel like an idiot for asking.
People who have helped me find things/programs when I gave them up as too hard.
A reason to stay interested in programming
An easy route to get into programmin thanks to Programming school.
Programming school: a better teaching method than those that cost a fortune. I still always find it amazing that Mouser takes the time to mark my attempts at coding. If it wasn't for DC I wouldn't know any code, and its now a hobby I enjoy.
And I'll never forget how good I felt when Mouser gave me a 'supporting member' status and lifetime license when I was too young to have enough money to donate, and didn't have a credit card to do it with anyway.
Not to mention links to all sorts of really cool tech jokes and cartoons. :)
Big Cheers to everyone here. You're all legends. ['legend' is used in the Australian way. Means you're all awesome. But sounds better]

Nick (nudone): We all owe you so much for creating Cody the DC mascot -- I cannot even begin to fathom this site without him. I love the little fellow and I know i'm not the only one by a long shot. Thank you.
Let's keep this thread going with new faces! -- I want to see how many different members we can get posting to this celebration topic.

Hi all. I am an "Old Guy" of 70 years who started coding in the mid 1970's when computers were very different. Learned my stuff from 3 computer scientists who guided me through some very strange stuff and I had a blastl. I ended up hooked and never left the sight of a computer. My wish was that I had the kind of community and resources that are available today. Keep up the good work and and I will be watching what happens. Just do not stop when you reach $6,000. You can always use the funds to expand your work in other ways.
-
I love seeing all the different people on this thread, both the old timers and the new members -- thank you oakvillan, muadib, TAF2000, Rambo54, insert_nick!

How would you want to stop volunteered donations, put a stop-sign at the site? That's not going to happen :D
Any donation, big or small is more then welcome, mouser said that several times, in the last 6 years
-
I think what he was saying is to expand the scale of the thermometer if we reach $6,000 and keep the fundraiser going throughout the month, something i think we should do. Just remember, donations won't continue at anything close to this initial pace; most of the donations so far have come people responding to the special fundraiser email/newsletter that went out over the last couple days.
-
C'mon all.... Keep it coming! Give up just a few latte's and we'll blow that thermometer up. :-\ :P

Fairly new member here, also a member at Tweaks.com,Guru of 3d and a few others.Gamer/PowerUser who really likes process tamer and FARR.OK, after reading all these enthusiastic posts you have all gotten to me, the credit card is coming out again. Congratulate yourselves because I am very very cynical. Years of computer tweaking has caused me to merge, in a sense, with my equipment, permanently dampening the happy kid part of my brain.I am also in my 50's which doesn't help nor do all those long forum arguments over everything from modded drivers to malware. But your forum is like a trip to Playland compared to many others and I have enjoyed reading some of these posts. So I am going to buy mouser a cup of virtual coffee.Donation on the way.Good luck with the fund drive.

But let's not stop while we are going strong -- I've extended the thermometer range to $10,000. That's a bit ambitious but let's see if we can make it and give more people a chance to become part of the family and share in the experience of donating :)

I've just been moving to a new house the last week or so and I've missed most of this initial rush of excitement. But coming in now and seeing it all it's really pretty amazing what has happened in less than a week of this fundraiser. This really is an unique and wonderful place, and the support that has come in from just the first few days is huge proof of that for me. While I know it won't continue at that level, that doesn't take away from how amazing it is that we've more than reached the initial goal already in less than 1/4 the total time of the fundraiser. It's also fantastic to see new (and old lurker) members popping in to say hello.
I'll be doing my own donating a bit later in the month, hopefully I can help sustain the momentum. :)

Quoting EncyclopædiaDramatica (which is extremely NSFW and pretty funny):
T'S OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAAAAAND! or just Over 9,000 is an over-used meme that was started by the japanese anime show 'Dragonball S**t', where characters would use scouters to detect power levels. This meme was c**tpasted many, many times and it's not funny anymore. Usage will only make you look like a weeaboo.-http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Over_9000

I say 15K ;-) Shoot for the stars, expect the moon!
-
+1 w/Josh.
Or at least make it $12K which would be double the original goal.
I'd love to see it hit that much, if for no other reason than as a response to some comments about how poorly DC is supposedly serving it's community.

We reached our secondary goal and I'm ecstatic about it. Everyone should feel great about it, and let's try to use this energy and momentum to make the site better in the coming year.
But after some consulting with master Cody on his Himalayan mountain top meditation retreat, I have gone and raised the final fundraiser thermometer goal to the extremely unlikely target of $15,000.
I know what you're thinking:
We have already exceeded our expectations and goals for the fundraiser.. There is no pressure or stress about raising any more money -- anything from here on out is just icing on the cake and extra padding for the nest.
So let's see where we end up!

One of the perks of being in Cody's Club is if you ever find yourself out on the street with not a penny in your pocket, you may request a loan from any (non-captive) flying bird you see. Just stick out your hand at arm's length, face up, and approach the bird slowly. If bird flies away and refuses to give you a loan, please report him to the authorities for violating his obligations.
Note: You may need to present your signed DonationCoder.com membership card (https://www.donationcoder.com/Scripts/MemberKit/index.html) to the bird (and the authorities if you are reporting the bird).
-
I received the kit a couple of years ago. I wonder where all the stickers went that I did not put on my laptop... I'll have to put the badge on a few of my hoodies though, that'll lighten them up (they are basic hacker apparel: black).

if you ever find yourself out on the street with not a penny in your pocket, you may request a loan from any (non-captive) flying bird you see. Just stick out your hand at arm's length, face up, and approach the bird slowly.
-mouser
Ok...so I tried it...and he gave me...well...something anyway. Put it right in my hand he did. :o
I don't know if it's a loan or not though.
If I gave something similar to somebody else, I don't think I'd want it back. :-\

Hey mouseman,
i just want to give you a thumbs up. You know, while i'm a nearly daily IRC member of the DC channel i'm not a everyday forum reader. But i read your event updates EVERYDAY.
So to answer your question. YES, at least i - and i'm sure hundred others, read your daily update posts.
And thanks also to all of those fundraiser participants that write that apps, reviews, stories, hints, political speeches ... HUH???? errrrr...cancel that last one please. :) Good work, please go on.
Greetings
JoTo
PS:
Maybe this was a test, but i noticed that the post for 14th is missing! GOTCHA and proofed that i read them. :)

I don't know if it's a loan or not though
-40hz

I was googling and found this website, actually I was looking for a free screencapture software, a few weeks ago I just got a paypal account, so I decide to donate as a way to say "Thank you".

A friend recommended "The Form Letter Machine" to me many moons ago. I downloaded it and tried to work with it. Found the learning curve with it a bit time consuming and did not pursue it at the time. I do want to use it and just have to take the time to learn it.
As for Donation Coder, I think it is a great effort that seems to work well for the more eager crowd. Once I will have some more time available I will do more exploring of the site and its offerings.
-
First, congratulations on six years! I've been using Screenshot Captor for a really long time and other software from Donation Coder for even longer that. Only now am I able to donate and I'm happy to.
Thanks for amazing software. Have a good one.
-
Yeah nice one, frederic and ryanmr!
Welcome aboard :)
Thanks for taking your time to speak up about your experience with donationcoder.
-
Does anybody know of any other site, organization, or cause that scores double their goal during a fundraiser?
I think that's pretty unique.
-
Though I have not had lots of time to spend here I have been around since the beginning and can say it is a great site. Your drive came at a good moment when I was able to donate. May the site continue on for a long time to come...

Wahoo!

I wonder how close to $14,000 we can still get in the upcoming 24 hours... 8)

All this donating temporarily broke the thermometer!

fun_razor.c:993 in function get_rich() fund_alloc() temporary money counter overflow: ETOOMUCHCASH
or something like that. I haven't programmed c in a VERY long time.

Ok it's official, we have just broken our very intimidating fundraising record from 2009 of $13,838. I didn't think there was a chance in hell of that happening when we started, what with the global economy being the way it is.

It's all thanks to the amazing and generous and encouraging people who have made DC possible since it's start. It's a great day for DC. Thank you to everyone who has donated now and in the past.
-
Make that a wopping $14,025 right now. Woot! :-*
-
It's totally awesome to see how these donations kept coming in. It didn't feel like the 'trickle' that was mentioned before; of course it wasn't the high volume of donations of the first few days, but I'd still call it a 'steady stream'.
mouser: can you prepare a graph that shows sum of donations per day and other such statistics?
-
From FIDO-net, through Usenet, to DonationCoder - the only thing do really miss from those days might be the promising noice from the modem, making a connection.
Anyhow - greetings from IKEA-country, and good luck! :-*
BTW - more Mouser videos to the people!
-
Welcome, DerekHal,
the promising noice from the modem, making a connection
-DerekHal
;D
The noise is there, but the frequency is just too high for humans to be able to hear it. And lots of time the connection is kind-of permanent, so connecting isn't done that often anymore
-
From FIDO-net,(...) to DonationCoder-DerekHal
Ha! Excellent another one with FIDO experience! Welcome to Donationcoder, let's bring sanity to the internets! :D
-
@ $14,111 now,
I was thinking a good number to finish up on - but forgot it's got another 6 hours or so to go 'over there' before the day is done :)

I still haven't donated yet... waiting 'til the end like I always do on fundraisers :)
(In at 11:22PM local time... and we're now well over 14k!)
-
We did it!
We broke past our top fundraising goals and passed our record fundraising amount from 2009. Awesome.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE!

This was really an awesome month and a great experience.
Looks like time to call it a wrap!
-
I am super proud of this community. Awesome, awesome, and awesome again. Congratulations to DC and to all of us. :)
- Oshyan

Hooray!
-
WOW! :) :) :)
What a result! I am proud to be a small gear in this great community.
It was amazing this month to wait till next day to see what comes next. And i got lot of nice readings, hints and some programs from it.
Thank you to all contributors to make this possible and i hope i have the opportunity to be a contributor in 2 years at the next fundraiser.
And thank you to all donators as well to make it possible that my most loved website in the net is now capable to exist for another 2 years or so.
And last but not least THANKS TO MOUSER! Our cheese of cheesys, our beef in the burger, our man who mouser us all the time in the IRC channel, and of course our always squeaking gear that make all this here possible (of course with the help of us - but he is mainly the engine that drive us to the events like N.A.N.Y, fundraiser, mass suicide  ...errr cancel the last please :-[ ). :D
Now i just hope (Attention: Pure egoism follows) that i am one of the winners of the giveaway drawing. :P Anyone can imagine how difficult it is to write this message with crossed fingers? :o
Fundraiser celebration is over now...but don't let celebration stop here. Let's celebrate now the results, the winners of the upcoming drawing and our community in it's all for the next 2 years. Then we end this celebration season and just begin a new one with a new fundraiser.
THANK YOU AGAIN TO ALL OF THIS GREAT PLACE!
Greetings
JoTo

-JoTo
I've been typing this way since I put in my sign-up for a few nice items in the drawing :tellme: so my hands are a bit cramped now :'(
-
This an extremely gratifying result.
The astonishing amount raised, almost three times the stated target, is the more remarkable because of the prevailing, harsh economic climate.
I take it to be an incandescent endorsement of DonationCoder as it stands.
-
Wow. Congrats to all.
-
I guess we have to overcome those shortcomings that lotusrootstarch mentioned. Obviously people dislike DoCo ;-)
Good job, DoCo team!

As contentious as lotusrootstarch might be in arguing his points, I'd caution against making this a 'referendum' to continue with no changes; I do think that there is a need to continue to evolve. I just don't believe in change for the sake of change, but change directed by mouser's idea for the site, and the members of the site.
... I hope that made sense. :-[

Another CONGRATULATIONS to everyone that worked so hard in reaching and EXCEEDING the initial goal.
It is the "regular" posters old and hopefully some new ones as time goes on, that provide the knowledge, assistance, programs, snacks and general good times that continues to make DonationCoder so unique. Which I believe helps increase the membership not only during fundraisers but on a daily basis.

this is one of the best sites on the net and CONGRATULATIONS form AUSTRALIA OR DOWNUNDER on the final total Please make some w7 :beerchug: ASAP.
