Title: Hidden Netflix Marathon Gems to Watch Online
Post by: mouser on November 09, 2009, 12:51 AM
I've always been a huge fan of movie or show marathons, which go on for tens of hours.. I find them extremely calming and comforting, the fact that they just go on an on.. Often i only pay attention to bits and pieces as i'm working -- i often like to have something on in the background while i work.

Anyway, i've discovered a few of these series that you can watch online if you are a member of netflix, and i thought i'd share them, and ask for other suggestions of related shows.  These are all available to watch online:

Wire in the Blood
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Damn good serial killer mysteries, if that's your fancy.
"In the first season of the BBC series, based on the novels of writer Val McDermid, psychologist Tony Hill (Robson Green) uses his ability to get into the mind of a criminal to help police detective Carol Jordan (Hermione Norris) solve cases. This season involves a series of brutal murders, a copycat strangulation and a double murder linked to a string of hate crimes."
TOTAL LENGTH: About 27 hours.  There are 6 seasons online with 3 episodes each season, and 1.5 hours per episode.

House of Cards Trilogy
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Great british political suspense, from 1990.
"Set in Britain's Houses of Parliament, this political satire follows the career of a ruthless MP (Ian Richardson) whose election campaign has been plagued by a number of mysterious deaths. The politician's scheming knows no bounds, and he manages to ensnare a member of the royal family in his quest for power. This series was controversial in Britain for its close depiction of Prince Charles's actual life. "
TOTAL LENGTH: About 10 hours

Lost
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Not really a hidden gem since everyone knows about this show; and frankly i didn't like it very much, but it is a wonderfully long distraction.
"Stranded on a tropical island after their plane crashes 1,000 miles off course, a group of castaways must learn to survive in their new home, avoid the gigantic something crashing through the trees and determine whether they're really alone. Matthew Fox, Evangeline Lilly, Terry O'Quinn, Dominic Monaghan and Naveen Andrews head the diverse ensemble cast in this landmark series, which won an Emmy for Best Drama."
TOTAL LENGTH: About 60 hours.

What other long marathon gems have you found on Netflix online?

Looks like some of the MST3K flicks are available to watch online:

http://www.netflix.com/WiSearch?v1=mst3k&search_submit=&lnkce=acsNoEnhRt

Unfortunately the search/catalog setup seems a bit awkward.  They should probably add a keyword to the search for Watch Instantly Only results. You sort of have to search a list of what they have instead of searching for what you want to watch.

Anyway, I got it set up on my Vista64 quad core as well as W7 32 bit.  The video is the same.  Guess there's a certain bandwidth it uses if your video can handle it, and anything less prolly gets the "streaming square" treatment. :)

It would be nice if they got some of the TV classics on it.  It's difficult to search except by guessing but I tried a few classics like the Don Adams Get Smart series(not available for streaming.) I rented many of the discs and at @24 minutes with the commercials sucked out, they would be good for watching online.  It's amazing going back to those days and remembering the TV.  Of course if you are too young to have lived through the Cold War(tm) then it's more or less just old Vaudeville jokes(guy who has the secret info is lying on the floor after being shot. Max crouches down to get the info... man whispers in Max's ear.  99 says "what did he say Max?" and Max says "he said, would you please get your knee off my chest."  They used the same punch lines over and over.  Part of the charm was you could see them coming(like anytime someone is on the floor watch for the "knee off my chest" punch line.  Or if someone tries to jump onto a moving vehicle, out a window etc,. look for "missed it by that much!"

I thought the first season of Weeds was hysterically funny.

(It lost most of its subtlety after that, so I quit watching it about three episodes into the second season.)

Cable series comedies aren't my 'usual thing'. But there was something about Mary-Louise Parker's performance as Nancy, "a zoned-out suburban soccer-Mom pot dealer" that absolutely killed me.

Note: Ms. Parker isn't all that hard on the eyes either.

Looks like a few of the British series I like made the list.  Doctor Who, Good Neighbors, Yes Minister, Red Dwarf.

edit: btw, just thought I'd mention it.  FF 3.6 beta auto updater will update to FF 3.6 beta 2. Apparently one of the fixes is the video.  Netflix is working for me now on both my PCs using FF 3.6 beta 2.

(also for those of you who like to go to TV Guide online to check listings, looks like they fixed the pop down descriptions when you click on a show in the grid.)  Firefox stable 3.5.5 even if you enable both jit settings still seems a step slower than 3.6.  This may be ready for prime time now(pun will be disavowed if I am captured.)

edit2: come to think of it, the TV Guide thing was only broken in 3.7Pre.  I took 3.7Pre off for the time being since I don't see any feature yet that 3.6 doesn't have and 3.6 seems to be getting things working now.  Maybe I'll give 3.7 another week and try it again.

Speaking of this play online... anyone know if there are any controls to adjust brightness or other picture characteristics?  I tried one film that was so dark I could only see vague shadows of motion.  I don't see any picture controls such as you have on PC software players for brightness, contrast, etc..

I'd say relying on your monitor's own controls or an 3rd party app like Powerstrip or one of the countless graphics card tweaker programs would probably be your best bet.

Not sure if it's available for instant watch, but I figure something like Star Trek: The Next Generation would have several years worth of video to waste your time on. And it was back in the day when TV shows had a moral to the story.

Usually I find it easier to get hooked on shows when I can watch a bunch of episodes in sequence rather than one a week as they come out on first airing.  I'm going through the Heroes series.  Already watched Season 1 and started on Season 2 today.  When I watched a couple of episodes as they originally aired I didn't get the appeal.  Now I can see it's mostly for laughs. In the episode I just watched, Nakamura goes back in time and becomes his own hero that he read about as a child.  That was a cute twist.

Hmmmmmm, I'm old I guess.  When I was a kid, this show was a Disney TV series with James MacArthur(the Danno of "Book 'em Danno" Hawaii 5 0) in the lead.  That's all I can remember about the show.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

The first season, a short one, is more than decent (if a bit cheesy at times), the second better, and by the third season you see why this is one of the most entertaining series ever, 145 episodes worth.

The first person who views all 145 and reports back here gets all my DC credits.  I'll consider them well spent in the interest of spreading cultural treasure.  ;)

I am just going through the 5 seasons of Angel - a spin-off from Buffy. Darn, I like the writing behind it (thanks, mr. Whedon )

Is 'Spartacus: blood and sand' any good? I loved both seasons of 'Rome', which had a lot of good reviews. But with this Spartacus it is mixed. The era holds my interest, hence the question.

+1 Firefly. A classic.

Reverend Book: If you take sexual advantage of her, you're going to burn in a very special level of hell.  <pause> A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater.

Mal: I would appreciate it if one person on this boat would not assume I'm an evil, lecherous hump.

Zoe: No one's saying that, sir.

Wash: Yeah, we're pretty much just giving each other significant glances and laughing incessantly.

Yes, but at least Joss Whedon and crew came back to wrap it all up with the movie Serenity.  (also streamed on NetFlix).

Fair point. I'm glad they were able to have one last hurrah. Just wish they could have done it over several seasons, instead of one 2 hour movie with "big stuff" thrown in for shock value and emotional impact. But I still love the movie. :D

I heard an interview with Whedon where he said that the full story arc for Firefly was planned out over four 16-episode seasons. When Firefly got axed from TV without warning he was very annoyed that the first season ended on a semi-cliffhanger and with loose ends dangling all over the place. Any DoCo members that write (or try to write) fiction will know exactly how frustrated Whedon must have felt.

Nothing in Serenity was put there for "shock value." Everything in it was planned for inclusion in the TV series, such as: certain unfortunate deaths, two romantic subplots, and the "big discovery" about River. The River "discovery" was supposed to end the series with enough left open (i.e. what The Alliance might do next) to start a new story cycle within the Firefly framework.

Joss said when it became obvious to him that the TV series "wasn't ever coming back," he decided to "telescope" everything into one movie and get as much of that first story arc into it as possible. He said the real trick was not pushing it to the point of where Serenity turned into a nonstop action film since the "quiet scenes" and dialog (like some of the back and forth that takes place in the crew cabins or dining area) were often considered the best parts of the series.

I thought he did pretty well in that it probably needed something like 6-8 hours of screen time to tell the "whole" story.  It's even more impressive when you consider he only had about two hours of film time to get it done in.

Also unfortunate were all the story pieces that ultimately got left out such as:

So yeah, maybe Serenity was a tiny bit of a disappointment with everything that either got glossed over, rushed, or just plain left out. But I still think Whedon deserves a lot credit for doing as much as he did with what he was given to work with.

Ok, you've got a lot of good points there. :D Perhaps I spoke too harshly in saying that it was put there for "shock value". Of course I expected that many such events would happen over the course of the series, but "telescoping" them, as you say, into a 2 hour movie is where the problem comes in. It makes it *seem* like it's for shock value. I understand it wasn't, and I wasn't even necessarily assuming it was, more - as you said - that he was forced to compress everything down. I just kind of felt like maybe he should have left room for a sequel, since he had so much more story to tell. Of course that would have been a gamble on him getting a chance to even do a 2nd movie which, given the axing of the original series, probably wasn't a safe bet. So he was probably right to do what he did. But still, so sad. If I had a couple million, I'd throw it his way just to finish it.

Well...there's a lot of blood...a lot of sand...and a whole lot of sex. Probably unavoidable since we're dealing with slaves...and the Roman attitude and their treatment of slaves is pretty well documented. Nothing here you can't get from reading a good history book or actual account from the period. Apparently, these upper class Romans managed to pack a lot into their day.

IMHO a lot more brutal than the Rome series was. The bad guys are so "over the top" that it gets a little cartoonish at times. (My GF has been heard to mutter: Oh come on! during a few of the scenes.)

Very nice looking cast too, if you're into that sort of thing. You'll get to see A LOT of Ms. Lucy "Xena" Lawless if you watch it regularly.

"Pretty girl - and all grown up too.." as my GF so nicely puts it.  ;) ;D

She's a pretty decent actress too BTW.

Overall: worth a watch if you're a fan of the period. The Rome series was much better.

No fault there. I wouldn't have known either if I hadn't been dragged (kicking and screaming) to a SciFi Con where Whedon (unbeknownst to me) was scheduled to talk.

Once I found out about that, I settled down.

It was an interesting talk. Good Q&A too since the audience was about 50% diehard "Browncoat" - so these people knew their 'Verse inside out.

Fun two hours. :)

Just wondering if anyone has figured out how to adjust brightness watching Netflix using Silverlight?  It will play in both chrome and firefox, but if it's too dark to watch I can't find any control to adjust brightness/contrast.  Some of the videos look like the cameraman left the cap on!

What system are you playing it on and what is the graphics card used? What is your normal media player and do you have the same problem there? (presumably not) If you did at some point have a similar problem in other media players, how did you correct it? It's possible Silverlight is using "overlay" mode or some other specialized video streaming display system, which may be controllable by advanced settings in a graphics card driver.

Intelligence (2006), a canadian cop+criminal tv series like "The Wire":

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Intelligence/70153374)

http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Intelligence/70153374

2 seasons, about 20 hours in total.

A Canadian version of The Wire using people you'd recognize from da Vinci's Inquest and Battlestar Galactica. Intelligence is an engrossing crime drama told from the point of view of both the ambitious feds (they call them "Horsemen" for the Mounted Police in the White North) and the successful but challenged organized criminals. Like the Wire, Intelligence is talky in a rapid fire way that requires you to play close attention to each scene. Miss a couple of short scenes while you go for snacks and you'll be lost. Also like The Wire, it respects its audience to feed them realistic characters and situations. You get to follow along closely with the double dealing office politics of the feds, the shrewd confidence games of the crims, and the arrogant incompetents in both camps who keep everybody off balance and in danger. Meanwhile, everybody's got issues with their ex-wives or ex-husbands. This is one of those shows that pulls you in so deeply into the lives of the characters that the time just flies.

Sorry, I missed replying to your post in a timely fashion.
It's my understanding that all this stuff is not software adjustable in Sliver Light. On other boards people's solutions amount to "adjust the settings on your monitor." Not really acceptable afaic.

It's probably the #1 Silver Light complaint.  No brightness/contrast controls.

The "watch in web browser" didn't work for me most of the time anyway. I think they gave me a couple of bucks off a month to just have DVD rental.

If you want both DVD rental via discs and set top box input then look for 2 separate monthly charges.

Breaking Bad Series:

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Breaking_Bad/70143836)

Breaking Bad was created by Vince Gilligan, who spent several years writing the Fox series The X-Files. Gilligan wanted to create a series in which the protagonist became the antagonist. "Television is historically good at keeping its characters in a self-imposed stasis so that shows can go on for years or even decades," he said. "When I realized this, the logical next step was to think, how can I do a show in which the fundamental drive is toward change?"

Quite a good show.

I'll second this. I learned about Wire in the Blood from the Hulu side, and it impressed me. It was on time delay so I could only see a couple seasons a month, but I REALLY like the longer 1.5 hour format for dramas. Almost everything in the US is at the 42 minute mark, and it eventually the pacing gets under my skin once in a while when I sorta know "something X has to happen" even if I don't know exactly what, the pacing rules the show. In that longer format, the character get to ponder and deal with the problem longer.

I'm in total agreement with TaoPhoenix. The series I follow lately are about 55 minutes in length, but only have 12 to 14 episodes per season for (Dexter and Breaking Bad). Game of Thrones only has ten episodes per season!

What these series lack in amount of episodes, they make up for with "density", so to say.

I really look forward to new episodes, which has not happened in a very long while. In fact I hardly watch any commercial or public TV anymore as most programs do not ignite any interest in me.
When I was still living in the Netherlands I was only watching Discovery Channel (from the 40 channels available through the normal broadcasting system, never got into pay channels and/or satellite).

Breaking Bad I completely recommend, it grows on you, each season becoming better than the previous one. The season 4 final made a big impression on me.

That's what I liked about many of the Asian TV series. There are long running series like the Japanese show Kinpachi Sensei, but a lot of them are mini-series.  The most common range, just from my anecdotal experience, seems to be 8 - 16 episodes.  If it's a big hit they may do a Season II or even III but usually the concept is beaten to death by then. It's more refreshing if they do 8 or 9 shows then move on to another concept.

As one example, a show about the lust for Olympic Gold, 11 episodes:

Gold (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/GOLD)

Trouble is many of the free online streaming sites get 4 or 5 episodes in, and it peters out. Maybe due to lack of English subtitles.  Many of the subbers raise hell if their subs end up on streaming sites. In this case Gold on MySoju (http://www.mysoju.com/japanese-drama/gold/) seems to be stuck on Episode 5.

I'm partial to the modern British TV Sherlock Holmes series simply called Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes and Martin Freeman as Watson. If you're a Holmes fan, or a Baker Street Irregular, you'll especially appreciate the way the writers have taken classics from "The Canon" and given them a very workmanlike update and modern twist. Una Stubbs plays a marvelous Mrs.Hudson ("Not your housekeeper, dear.") as does Andrew Scott as Jim Moriarty, an utterly twisted and psychotic modern interpretation of Holmes' arch-nemesis Professor Moriarty.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Favorite episode: A Scandal in Belgravia featuring actress Lara Pulver as a stunning and brilliantly understated Irene Adler (aka: "The Woman"), updated from an opera star and 'adventuress' in the original Doyle story (A Scandal in Bohemia) to a professional dominatrix in this modern telling.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

There's a great moment when she informs Sherlock Holmes: "I would have you right here - on this table - until you begged for mercy twice." When the normally unflappable Holes replies that he never begs, she merely arches her eyebrows and says, "Twice."

^^I was introduced to this Sherlock Holmes show a few months ago.  I also really enjoyed it, so I concur and recommend it as well.  They made it really fun for a lot of different types of audiences.  I'm a huge Holmes fan, been reading the books since I was a kid.  The new movies are pretty good also.

I will have one point of criticism for this new modernized version of Holmes: they are both missing something.  i don't know what it is, but there's a quality to the books that doesn't seem to translate well to our hip societies.  I think what the rehashes have done well is take the subtleties of the stories that normally get ignored, like the personalities, and they've exaggerated them to show everyone how these are different than the same ol Holmes depicitions of the last 100 years.  And I like that, but it's a little too much.  The original stories were a little more subdued.  Holmes' wittiness wasn't so in your face.  I mean, the movies turned him into a British Jackie Chan.  yes, he's a good fighter, but Holmes was also always surrounded by a sense of gritty realism.

Anyway, a friend of mine recommended I watch the British Holmes version from the 80s, which is supposed to be very good and authentic (Jeremy Brett is Sherlock). Here's the amazon link (http://www.amazon.com/Sherlock-Holmes-Complete-Granada-Television/dp/B000RPCJB6/ref=sr_1_6?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1344225290&sr=1-6&keywords=sherlock+holmes).

Ok, my turn now.  My new favorite show is Louie:

This guy...I can't say enough good things about this guy.  The show is funny, beautiful, honest, emphatic, shocking...genius.  He does things with relationships that is just the most honest portrayal of dating and parent/child stuff that I have ever seen on the tube.  Which reminds me...I'm about to watch the latest one, can't wait!!

I believe season 1 is on netflix streaming.

There's a great moment when she informs Sherlock Holmes: "I would have you right here - on this table - until you begged for mercy twice." When the normally unflappable Holes replies that he never begs, she merely arches her eyebrows and says, "Twice."
^^, by the way 40, i have to see that scene.  I love that Bohemia story, one of my favorite endings.

Lost is a (previously mentioned) favorite. The new Battlestar Galactica was great, except the [worst ever] ending. Have to agree with Mouser, Breaking Bad is an excellent series.

Other great SciFi: Stargate SG-1 (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Stargate_SG-1/70155599?trkid=2361637), Stargate Universe (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Stargate_Universe/70143870?trkid=2361637). Sadly, the BEST Stargate and the shortest lived is Stargate Atlantis. I watch it on Amazon Prime but apparently it's not on Netflix.

My absolute favorite background marathons, though, are MacGyver (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/MacGyver/70153399?trkid=2361637), Sliders (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Sliders/70140439?trkid=2361637) and Fraiser (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Frasier/70153412?trkid=2361637) -- each of which I've watched start to finish no fewer than 3 times. If I could find it all in once place, Sopranos would be up there too.

One of the Japanese series I really enjoyed was Trick (http://www.mysoju.com/japanese-drama/trick/)

They did a season 2 and 3 but by the third year the jokes to do with the foibles of the lead characters were drilled out.

Nakama Yukie plays a magician hired by a Professor played by Abe Hiroshi to debunk those who claim to have occult or mystical powers.  It's a tongue in cheek fun series.

Shu Qi stars in a fine action series, Romance of Red Dust (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCFGj39SmM0)

I watched it on DVD (http://dvd.netflix.com/Movie/Romance-of-Red-Dust/70072323?strkid=100892328_0_0&strackid=5c3df5cee4ffc843_0_srl&trkid=222336) available on Netflix

The video quality on DVD is pretty good considering it's 4x3 TV. Very good action series. Shu Qi looks good and kicks ass. :)

I will have one point of criticism for this new modernized version of Holmes: they are both missing something.  i don't know what it is, but there's a quality to the books that doesn't seem to translate well to our hip societies.

I think what they're missing is the bluster and naive arrogance of the Victorian era, when men were men, women were women, and English virtues were the only virtues worth owning. It had an aura of innocence and certainty that you can't recreate in a modern setting. Nor can you duplicate the romance that the imagery of a fog shrouded horse drawn London provided. Setting and the era  are at the heart of Sherlock Holmes appeal. Much like Jules Verne and H.G. Wells needed a less technologically sophisticated world in which to create their wonders and make them believable within that context. Steampunk is trying to get some of that back, but it's still only a pastiche no matter how skillfully it's done.

Anyway, a friend of mine recommended I watch the British Holmes version from the 80s, which is supposed to be very good and authentic (Jeremy Brett is Sherlock). If you are at all a Sherlock Holmes fan you must watch the Granada Television produced Sherlock Holmes series.

Watch all of them. Jeremy Brett is Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. His interpretation and performance is totally authentic. And with the exception of a misguided attempt to add in a few stories not written by Doyle, all episodes are uniformly excellent. Best of all, each episode is remarkably faithful to the original Canon. A must see!

I'll also suggest the Inspector Morse and the quasi-sequel Inspector Lewis series. Best thing to come out of BBC/PBS Mystery since Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes performance. Convoluted mysteries set in and around the lovely scenery of Oxford University. Well worth getting into. Both series are available on Netflix.

Vouching for Inspector Lewis as well. Dutch public TV would show Inspector Morse in its day. Still think those are well worth watching.

If you want to take a look at the 80´s again, you could also watch Tatort (with the character: Schimanski). German Krimi that sometimes could match Morse. At least you will see some mullets...

This is a beautiful explanation of it, thank you.  This is also a new thing to me.  I'm starting to notice all the British influences in my life, it's interesting.  I'm definitely getting a better sense of what it means to be British specifically as opposed to American.  it's something I never understood before.

And you've now given me many hours of Holmes to look forward to.

Lost is definitelly a classic, even though it got terrible somewhere in the middle (golf episode, anyone?). It did get way better towards the end :)

Also, a +1 for sherlock: great actors (I love the moriarty character), good directing and an awesome story.
If you're a fan of science fiction with a pinch of humour, I recommend the last Dr.Who season, I had a blast wathching it :)

Don't forget about seeing the Peace Keeper wars. I'm not sure if these two episodes of Farscape are included nowadays, but they weren't around when I saw this series the first time around, years ago.

I know this is a Necro Thread, but then Sherlock Holmes is a 100 year old classic, so why complain that a thread is "all of a year old"? So here goes.

I'll reverse it: What the old series had that maybe the modern takes don't (I haven't seen them) is respect for both pondering and the spoken word. I'm having trouble recalling scenes where Holmes was actually fighting - yes, he could avoid a two bit thug, but he didn't go around becoming known as the next great fighter.

Instead, he sorta just tripped-and-punched the thug, *then went home*. Then he thought a lot about what it all meant (with Watson as a sounding board.)

So in one sense, it's back to my theme this month about pacing - sometimes he sent off a letter by postal mail, and he knew there wouldn't even be an answer for about three days. That alone is way different from our hyper-speed world!

The Last Kingdom on Netflix:
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4179452/)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4179452/

The first episode is just ok, and the last couple get a bit silly, but the majority of it in the middle is really quite good.

From IMDB:
"The year is 872, and many of the separate kingdoms of what we now know as England have fallen to the invading Danes, leaving the great kingdom of Wessex standing alone and defiant under the command of King Alfred. Against this turbulent backdrop lives our hero, Uhtred. Born the son of a Saxon nobleman, he is captured by the Danes and raised as one of their own. Forced to choose between the country of his birth and the people of his upbringing, his loyalties are ever tested. What is he? Saxon or Dane? On a quest to reclaim his birthright, Uhtred must tread a dangerous path between both sides if he is to play his part in the birth of a new nation and, ultimately, recapture his ancestral lands.
The setting is a historical one of England roughly around 800-900 A.D. The conflict involves the vikings who are eager to take more ground and the native English peoples or more correctly the Saxons who desire to hold the ground they have and repel the Vikings from England. The main protagonist is a fictional character although his birth place and enemies who contest him; Ubba (Ubbe Lothbrok) and Guthrum are real figures."

I missed (or ignored or forgot) the recommendation here.

I just finished watching it due to a recommendation from a friend. I liked it. I would also recommend it.

No plot spoilers, but some discussion of the ending in more detail
I didn't realize it was only 8 episodes long. I feel like we were just getting to the heart of the mystery when suddenly everything wrapped up nicely with a bow on it, and the episode was (or felt like it was) only half over. Then the red of the episode dragged on for (seemingly) another 30 minutes like it was Lord of the Rings, with a small cliffhanger or two just before the credits rolled.

In that sense, I was kind of disappointed with the ending. It just felt sudden and rushed. But rushed so much that they then had to fill the last half of the episode with boring filler stuff. My complaint here is only with the execution of the ending. As far as the plot goes, I don't really have any significant complaints over the ending.

Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia (https://www.netflix.com/title/80075820)

It's one of those "magical creatures actually exist in the modern world and the kids need to keep it a secret from everybody else" type shows. While it is ostensibly geared towards children, it's actually really clever with a decent plot and plenty of humor that should keep even the adults entertained.

It features the voice talent of the late Anton Yelchin (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0947338/) as the main character. Anton's untimely death happened after just a few episodes into the final season had been recorded, but Emile Hirsch (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0386472/) did a good job as a replacement; I didn't notice the difference. (My wife did, but didn't point it out to me until we had finished the series.)

It's good, clean fun for the whole family.
