The May 2006 edition of the UK magazine Computer Shopper has a review of e-mail clients. They scored them as follows:
Microsoft Outlook 2003 - 2
Microsoft Outlook Express 6 - 2
Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5 - 4
Qualcomm Eudora Sponsored Edition - 3
Opera 8.51 - 3
Ritlabs The Bat! 3.65 Home Edition - 5
Pegasus Mail 4.31 - 3
So DC are not the only place that favours The Bat! :)

yes, i agree... Since Gmail came on the scene, I find myself using email clients even less... ;-)

I had been using webmail for years - but only in combination with email clients on my PC, since I was always missing stuff... Google Mail finally changed that!

I have used gmail for at least a year, back when it was by invitation only, and I've loved it always. I've used it via POP, with Outlook to start with, and then with The Bat! for the past six or seven months. However, I have spent the past month living in my browser (so to speak), relying only on gmail's web access for my email (and RememberTheMilk for my to-dos, and 30boxes for my calendar). While I will definitely continue with RTM and 30b, I am going back to The Bat! for email. As much as I like the gmail interface for on-the-go emailing while travelling, etc., I find that for me having an email client is necessary. But I love the fact that gmail keeps all my mail, so it's so easy to access things when I'm using some other computer. I find this combination to be my best working solution...

It seems pretty much anyone who gives The Bat! a fair shake prefers it -- the truth of the matter is, there's nothing out there that does more/is more flexible. Hard for geeks to turn down so much tweakability.
As for gmail, my first gmail account was spontaneously deleted . . . and gmail support was useless. I'm not the only one who, while using gmail entirely per its acceptable use policy, magically lost their account and everything in it without warning. If you're going to rely on gmail, please take advantage of its pop3 support and maintain a local copy on your hard drive. Nice blog, allen. Yet another reason why I love POP3. I have complete control of all the files and stuff. By the way, is there still a way to get gmail invites? I'm trying to get my mom her first email account.

well, to set the record straight... i use GMail in conjunction with Thunderbird but as m_s said if i'm using my browser, it's more likely that i'll use GMail rather than launching Thunderbird... ;-)
