Title: Please kill me now - just bought an iPad off of eBay
Post by: nudone on April 03, 2011, 09:22 AM
As a someone that considers anything Apple related as anathema, I have now digitally soiled myself by buying an iPad (version 1).

My excuse: I need it for website testing as I've found that trying to emulate how Safari works on these devices (and iPhone) isn't the same as really using Safari on them. (There must be some weird Safari and OS bugs going on.)

I've also told myself that, maybe, just maybe, my parents will stop being frightened by the internet and use the tablet rather than a netbook. Yeah, fat chance - but if they do then I'll consider it worth allowing the wretched Apple machine into the house.

Now, please excuse me whilst I go and flagellate myself for being such a hypocrite.

I sympathize. I also am having apple-buyers guilt. I think it helps if you don't think of the ipad as a computer, rather just a new toy that you can play with. Gain comfort with the idea that productive computing still remains mostly in a non-apple world. Don't get me wrong, the ipad is useful, but I would never use it a productivity tool. I don't consider checking email a productive activity either so don't pull that on me later.
It seems like that is Apple's philosophy as well, being that you still have to tether the ipad to an actual computer and the lack of any kind of file access ability.
I bought the ipad as a fun new toy. That is an excuse enough for me.

That sounds like a perfect description; I shall persuade my parents it is nothing more than a toy and "fun" to use. I'm just concerned that as soon as they have to type something on it the fun will quickly disappear.

Oh ye of little faith. It will be in "immaculate condition" just as described. I know it will. And the $2000 I wired as security to ensure a speedy delivery will definitely be returned to me like the seller agreed. I wasn't sure about sending him my PayPal account login and password but it seemed perfectly reasonable when he explained it would increase my "trust" rating on eBay. It's nice to know there are some good, honest, people out there.

Serious mode: it cost £288 (including 10 quid packaging) and the item is about four months old and in "immaculate condition".

I was watching other iPads being sold on eBay over the past few days and it seemed they were going for £380 so I don't think I've done too bad.

(I've seen that Argos, and maybe other UK outlets, are selling iPads (v1) for around £320 or £330 - but the whole country appears to be out of stock with no chance of that changing soon.)

Can you buy from the Apple store?  Refurbs are USD 349 on there, which is the reason that I've really been astonished how much people are getting on eBay...
Title: Re: Please kill me now - just bought an iPad off of eBay

I had no idea that they had a refurbs section, though, I've just checked it and it's completely empty, i.e. no UK refurbished Apple products at all.

It seems that iPads are the price they are on eBay as they are probably the quickest way of obtaining one at the moment.

Post by: Carol Haynes on April 03, 2011, 05:46 PM
And of course once you have an idea it has to be done yesterday  ;)

Why not wait 6 months? There will be at least three more generations to choose from by then and iPad version 1  will be down to 50p as the white box brigade scrabble and queue for version 5. Version 5 will come in an even whiter box that is so minimal you have to send it back to Apple to open it for you (only $99 for service plus packaging and VAT). It will have a prettier picture of an Apple on the back with an audible subliminal message to send all your money to Jobo. One of the newest features will be that it doesn't work at all unless you hold it 143 cm from the ground and titled to 27.3 degrees to the horizontal - unless you fit an expensive gel jacket to it - but then you can't touch the screen, a new security feature).

My thoughts exactly.  With the iPad 2 coming out, I've been able to get some pretty good deals on accessories too.  My latest toy... the ClamCase (http://www.clamcase.com).  That along with my BookBook (http://www.twelvesouth.com/products/bookbook_ipad/) I already had  and my Compass stand (http://twelvesouth.com/products/compass/) has me covered for all situations.

With Apple, isn't it Whites Only?

In seriousness, the iPad is a pretty nice device to use - it feels very well, even if it's slightly on the heavy side for use as, say, an eBook reader. If it wasn't for the ridiculous pricetag and the apple lock-in (oh, and for the 3G version which I'd definitely like, cell provider lock-in as well), I would probably have gotten one.

I've got a fair amount of eBooks, and a fair amount of situations where I don't need a fully-fledged laptop but could do with a tablet. I've considered an eBook reader, especially since eInk is nicer on the eyes... but they're so limited in what they can do, and eInk updating is slow, which would be a limitation if you need to flip back&forth or do a lot of searching.

But the pricetag... and it's not like the competition is much better. I can get a freaking full laptop for what an Ipad costs in .dk!

Well, for the iPhone 4 it was black only because producing a white iPhone was just so much more complex~! :P

I like how this thread has provided an outlet for more Apple hatred (that was worth me paying the price tag alone) - and a few justifications for the iPad itself.

Three days ago I had no intention of ever buying an iPad (which is one reason I've not bought an iPad 2). I've still no personal desire to use it myself - I just have a client that is complaining that their website doesn't look right on their own iPad, which means I now need to find out why - it's not a simple Safari issue as the site looks fine on non mobile Apple devices (another reason for me to hate Apple so much - their "perfectly designed and beautiful" devices don't actually display websites consistently).

That said, I will try it as an ebook reader, maybe a quick browser and email checker. The ergonomics of the device lead me to think that I won't use it much - so, I'll still by using my netbook when typing is involved.

If I do find that the iPad is genuinely useful - I'll buy an Android based tablet to replace it with when there is something decent to get.

In the meantime I'll just put the iPad in a brown paper bag when I'm using it so that no one sees me. If anyone asks what I'm doing I'll just say I'm stroking a deceased rat or something.

Why not go one stage further ... spray the case black and put a Linux sticker over the Apple - then everyone will think you are cool!

Seriously - the comparison between Apple and its products and the explosion in coffee based drinks is very good. Call something latte and you can charge 3 times the price for it as a coffee with milk ... call someting an iThing and ...

You only have to look at other brands such as the BBC in the UK who think it is cool to have iPlayer ... I'm amazed Apple haven't sued them yet.
Title: Re: Please kill me now - just bought an iPad off of eBay
Post by: nudone on April 04, 2011, 04:03 AM
I thought Apple had tried to stop the BBC using iPlayer - I could have just imagined it though.

I've already thought about putting stickers over the Apple branding, Carol. Using Linux would only make me look cool in places I don't frequent. The only people that will see me using the iPad will assume I'm playing with an Etch A Sketch, such is their amazing grasp of technology.

It works well with the clamcase I mentioned earlier.  I use it with that instead of a netbook; the weight with the keyboard is comparable, while the screen is larger and the form factor easier to heft.

Why not buy one from the US eBay then? They can't be charging over $100 for postage and most sellers will mark it as a gift.

Yes, that was $60 on the US ebay.  I think the price might be creeping up, since some people are spreading that they're unavailable with the iPad 2 out.  But it didn't seem like they were unavailable from the site...

right. iPad has arrived, it works. that's good.

the problems outlined by my client that said her page didn't display correctly on her iPad are not actually true. that's good and bad.

i've just pulled the muscles in my back by reaching to plug the iPad into the mains power. that's very bad and another reason for me to justifiably hate Apple.

at the moment, i'm not sure what to make of the device. i like the screen.

might look for a clamcase again - if there's one at a good price.

I'm sorry to say, that I am completely underwhelmed by the iPad experience so far.

The only really satisfying thing about it is that it makes me feel absolutely justified in despising all things Apple.

I was originally going to say "let's be honest, it's a bit rubbish, isn't it", as I thought it had a few good points. Now I'm just sick of all the flaws and the iTunes and iPhone nonsense - I say "iPhone" as that is all it is, but in a bigger box.

Navigation is crap, Safari is crap, iTunes is crap, the "intelligent" keyboard is crap, it's all crap. I know it's all crap because a team of designers, developers and engineers at Apple spent a long time on this device, but eventually made a machine that has so many flaws it resembles a first time project that a 16 year old design student would create - something their Lecturer would quickly browse over and then highlight all the fundamental flaws on its first use. Honestly, how can such a machine come to market that contradicts all the expectations of what a tablet should do.

Is "Apple" a religion or cult? Definitely. There is no other way people would be so determined to excuse all of Apple's terrible design and user experience if it weren't all down to "faith". Reason and first hand experience are overruled in the desire to believe in the Apple Gospels; for the belief in the divine truth of Steve Jobs, is the route to digital everlasting smugness.

(I won't bother listing all the things wrong with the iPad, you'll either know them already from first hand experience, or there'll be hundreds of blogs that say it all already.)

Well if you sell, I'd say sell fast.  I think the prices are up only because the iPad 2 isn't actually in hands yet.  That's the only way I could see someone paying $400USD+ for something that costs $499 new for the next gen.

And if you still haven't sold in a month or so and are interested, in doing so, let me know... I'm planning on buying my wife one about then.  I know I enjoy it, and she does too... and it is uniquely suited for her business needs as a photographer (displaying some of the RAW images to her clients to let them choose which ones they want printed on the spot).  The netbook she purchased for that reason is a bit too much in the wrong form factor, but the iPad works for that brilliantly.

So you don't like it? More like pie in the sky pad?

heheheheh, all very amusing comments. And a perfect way to sum it up; it really is Satan's SkyPad. If only there could be a holy war against Apple, I would march towards Armageddon with a smile on my face.

But!..

I will be keeping the iPad - for the moment. Wraith is right that it has it's uses. Horses for courses and all that. I don't really need to keep it for testing websites as I've now worked out and resolved the issues I was having with a client's website. (For anyone interested, mobile Safari displays text at one zoom level in, but not on all text. I don't see any good reasons for this but you can prevent it with "-webkit-text-size-adjust: none;" and other stuff to avoid targetting Chrome. Mobile Safari also appears to be tempremental about background images - which is a case of just trying other background sizes, etc.)

I *think* my parents do find using the iPad easier than a netbook. They still accidentally hit the wrong things on screen but the use of gestures seems more intuitive for them than using a mouse/pad. I just need to get one of the better iPad browsers that do really work how you'd expect on an tablet - mobile Safari is pretty rubbish, i.e. where's the gesture for "back/forward"; pathetic.

Personally, I don't have a good use for a tablet device. I will use it, because the instant-on/off is cool. The portability is cool. Erm, that's about it. I could test mobile Safari websites on an iPod Touch 1st gen (I think), so I could sell the iPad and get an iPod for a fraction of the price. If the experiment with my parents using the iPad fails then I'll get rid of it - but may well replace it with a tablet that works how I expect a tablet to work (if there is such a thing, maybe in a few months there will be).

I've still a lot to try out with it. Maybe jailbreaking is the way to go. Or just find the right Apps that make it work like a proper tablet and not just an inflated iPhone.

If you're thinking of doing "work" with the ipad, forget it.  It's just a casual, portable device to have with you.  Check time, check email (not necessarily write email), browse the web, watch some videos, go on facebook.  Anything more than this sort of thing will be frustrating.

There are no workhorse tablets yet.  It's not the fault of Apple or Android, it's just that nobody is doing that yet.  I'm guessing once Microsoft starts going with this (Windows 8?), then we'll be really able to use tablets to do hardcore work.

Try iCab Mobile.  That makes the browsing a lot better.  I also use Desktop at times (it allows a browser/app split screen... really cool), but iCab Mobile is my browser of choice (really wish it would allow you to change the default browser).

I like it for media consumption - I use it to read books and browse the web (and in my RPG game), but since I've purchased the clamcase, I also use it when writing my book.  The biggest pluses to me over other devices I have are battery life, single responsibility apps, and portability.

I don't have to worry about charging it.  I've only had the charge run out once, and I charge it maybe once a week.  Bluetooth runs it out faster, which is why I found out that my clamcase makes me have to charge once every couple of days if I leave it on.

When I use an app, I'm using that app, and not shuffling windows.  It has made a big difference in my productivity when writing.

I carry it pretty much everywhere, either in the clamcase or just the device itself.  It's light enough that I don't worry about it, but large enough that I can actually use it.  I use it in addition to my desktop to view things that I would have had on paper or a book next to me.  Basically as a reference.

Placed in the right expectations, it's a home run for me.  The iPhone/iPod would be too small for what I'm using it for; this is the perfect form factor.  And I rarely use iTunes, so I experience that irritation only minimally.  I only use it to back up what's on my iPad.  Purchasing and everything else I do from the iPad itself.

I was as big a nay sayer as anyone else in the beginning.  But to me, it's been worth it.

The iPad by itself I'd agree.  But with the clamcase, it becomes a whole different story.  That's why I had such high hopes for the atrix.  But the reviews have said that it's not there.  But I love that idea- the ability to have one small device that has different 'personalities' based on desired usage would be great!

Good tips, thanks. I know there will be ways to make it work - just would have been nice for Apple to have done something better with Safari, at the very least.

Oh, I'd agree.  I'd also agree that there are definite issues- the word completion really drives me nuts at times.  But it's a well designed device IMO, that's limited to a large part by the closed minded nature of the parent company.  Most of the limitations of the device could be overcome by 3rd parties.  But even though I've jailbroken my iphone, I haven't done the same for the ipad, because in the end, it becomes more trouble than it's worth IMO with the whole jailbreak thing (and that's a large part because of the idiocy of Apple, also).

The ipad, for once, actually offers something not pre-existing. the small form factor of this tablet and fact that it's completely keyboardless was unique to the market. now there have been many ebook readers which try to emulate it but nothing of value so far. i'm still not buying with a $500 price tag though, give me a netbook for less than half that price any day.

I've just installed the app for ReadItLater. I've been using ReatItLater across my main pc and netbook for quite a while now, so I've managed to colled a few hundred links to "read later", i.e. never.

I must say the iPad version seems very polished - makes the whole exercise of trawling through all these old links quite pleasurable. I think the penny is starting to drop with how nice a tablet can be - when you find the right thing to do on it. Using this "app" on the tablet does seem to be a lot better than doing it a desktop or netbook. It even automatically downloads all the page content to read offline.

Here's a linke if anyone is interested: http://readitlaterlist.com/blog/2010/06/introducing-read-it-later-for-ipad/

heheh, ooh, that old slate board and chalk would be an even better case to have than the Etch A Sketch one.

I must say, I'm really liking the speed of flicking through content (that's cached). I can see how this would be a pretty good "productive" tool when you're demonstrating things to people at close hand.

Hmm. I think I can feel the presence of the Lord of the I's (as in "I"pod/player/phone/tunes) slowly corrupting my soul.

I'd heard it was pretty lackluster.  And the android 1.6 was the sticking point for me.  How is the weight in tablet mode?  And how is the responsiveness?

I hate to be the one who breaks this to you, but their shaking their fists at it doesn't mean progress.

Also, I think you should begin a new topic and take us all on a guided tour of your toy box. You probably have better stuff in your reject pile than I can afford to buy new.

Me too, although it was mainly a the screen isn't as cutting edge breath taking as it could have (thoretically) been issue iirc. But after playing with it for a bit, it's really quite good. It is a bit dim on battery - to conserve said battery - but as I understand it, it will learn your behavior and dim the screen less often with use.

And the android 1.6 was the sticking point for me.

I'm not much of a "consumer"...So I like having an "full" OS to play with. My favorite toy is the command line.  *Shrug* :)

How is the weight in tablet mode?

Shit, were you under the impression it (came apart) made a difference too?!? ...I almost broke the friggin thing. It's heavy.

And how is the responsiveness?

It go zoom. I just installed Office 2010 std on it; install only took a few minutes ... and word etc pops right open in seconds (1 or 2-ish)

Being that I don't have a ton of experiance with touch screens (most piss me off) I'd say it's quite good. I managed to do the entire OOBE & setup via the touch screen without swearing.

Oops.  I'd thought that this one had the whole win7/android thing going too.  There's one tablet device that has both win7 and android on it- android for quick boot/longer battery life, and win7 for power. (ViewSonic ViewPad 10 (http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/08/viewsonics-dual-booting-android-windows-7-viewpad-10-tablet-n/)).  I was mixing my devices! LOL

I've been trying a variety of browsers and a few other apps for the iPad. Things definitely start to make sense when you've got some decent software installed. It's still not perfect, and it's still Apple, so I may just jump ship to another device quite soon.

It strikes me that the iPad is best used as a Reader - I suppose that is all it's meant to be (without extra peripheral keyboards). So, I thought I better have a look at the Kindle - I didn't know it had free 3G browsing. I think that is enough for me to try one - I'll post a new topic elsewhere on the forum about it...

Minor point: Shouldn't torment a lizard pet too much. Most don't cope with stressful situations all that well.

First they get nasty...

Then, a little later on, they'll often become ill.

Vet time.

$$$$$

(Meanwhile you've taught your lizard it's ok to get nasty when it's around people.)

Bad move.  :)

Er, no. My Archos 5IT was doing this in September 2009 and it was the SECOND generation of Archos Internet Tablets (the first, from about September 2008 was almost identical but ran an Archos version of Linux while the version I have runs Android 1.6 (Donut). Archos also offered a 7" version of the original tablet in September '08...

Minor. Fixed it. Thx.

Feel free to ignore too. Just my 2¢ on videos where they're deliberately pissing off an animal.

I'm a bit of a choirboy when it comes to that. But I am that way without going off the deep end (ala PETA) about it. Don't worry. No soapbox or lecture. I promise.  ;D
