Title: download all updates for XP in one go?
Post by: tomos on August 22, 2007, 08:15 AM
where to download all updates for XP in one go?

I know there used to be a site out there where you could get prepackaged so-to-speak updates for WinXP -
I want to combine them with XP CD for new install.
Just cant find it anywhere...
Any ideas (I was even there a couple months ago...
couldnt find anything here or googling, all I can think of is "updates")

I believe I bought the XP when it came out first so it doesnt even have SP1
I have SP2 on disc - does that supercede SP1? or do I need that too (naa, cant even find it anymore!)

thanks for any help, tom
EDIT/PS. was going to use nlite

thanks justice,

I got more creative with my searching & found:
XUD Pack (Xables Light Post XP-SP2 Update Pack)
http://udp.xable.net/changelog.html
&
RyanVM's Windows XP Post-SP2 Update Pack
http://www.ryanvm.net/msfn/updatepack.html

could anyone comment on any of these (EDIT: inc justices link above)?
(neither of which were the site I had looked at before...)

Tom - all you need is Sp-2 (it supersedes Sp-1) but that only helps if you can find the disc you burned it to!

thanks Mike, I reckon I can dig it out :)

Autopatcher is the one I was thinking of  ;)
well, sort of !!
it redirects you to Neowin.net when you go to download.

Still happy to take anyones recommendations on any of those sites ;)

well, autopatcher/neowin seems to be undownloadable
unless you using bittorrent
the Ryan one is downloading @ 10KB/second
thankfully I got the XUD already (200KB/sec, phew)

strange
autopatcher one is around the 300MB mark
RyanVM's one is around the 50MB mark
XUD is around 25MB only  :tellme:

will let ye know how i get on anyways!

EDIT: all above sizes offered as post SP2
PS. found SP2 disc so even if I only get that much slipstreamed I'll be reasonably happy

saga continues

had to download net framework for the laptop I using
(#2 requested, only #3 on offer so hopefully that does the job) to run nlite.
I had a check at windows updates & was offered an update to speed up updates/ensure I dont get any older(N/A) updates and so on spiel -
was shocked when I looked at the details to discover it was that update that checks your xp to ensure it's not pirated - whasitcalled Genuine advantage notification or something similar name

WTF WTF WTF
they're still trying to sneak that one in - and
under such false pretenses.

anyways, nlite running now as I write

I have used Autopatcher with great success in the past.  It is a huge download, but I've done it without bittorrent.  I always use the Cachefly mirror at http://www.getautopatcher.com/

Once you get the core download, you only need to download the monthly updates which are much smaller.

This option has one caveat, though. Does Autopatcher installs what you really need? That is, does it check the system to avoid installing unneeded (or even harmful) patches like the recent one for the Core 2 Duo and similar architecture processors? Actually, Windows Update downloads everything in one go, and pretty fast as well. It's true you get WGA as well, but you're going to need it to download something from Microsoft site (mwahaha, the plan is going as expected!)

;D

Lashiec, I have Core2duo & I get the impression at neowin thast they're fussy about what gets included so reckon I'll chance it

anyways, nlite running now as I write
unfortunately first nlite iso didnt boot - missing some unidentified kernel file...
I had included the XUD updates (post #2)
dont know if that was the problem or nlite itself
will try it again with just the SP2 pack & xp

EDIT: I had used the beta of nlite, maybe that was it...

How about this shavlik technologies business?

I have 'updated' my clean XP install after the mouse drivers went wrong. Now, it is suppossedly installing updates... only that it isn't.
The windows update is borked. Again. I have spent over a week trying to get this comptuter into shape.

I hate how M$ is making me waste time like noone's business.

Is Shavlik recommended? Anyone using it?

What can I do if the updates don't get installed (with a legit dell XP CD!)...

I used Shavlik for about six months back when they were offering a one year licence for free (so, about a year ago). It did the job - I ran my system without using Windows Update at all during that time, but I found the way it presented the info resulting from a scan confusing (could me me, though). Once you learn how to navigate its interface, it's OK. It uninstalled without much drama, so I think your best bet is to try the demo, if they're still offering one.

While all those update packs are great (I've used them myself), I actually prefer a small utility called "Windows Updates Downloader" (http://wud.jcarle.com/ProgramFiles.aspx). It'll download all the hotfixes directly from Microsoft (thus ensuring that they're safe and not tampered with), and it let's you pick just the ones you want. He even have update lists for Vista now :)

Looks good, Dirhael. Thanks for the link - I'm checking it out. I'm attracted by the idea of picking and choosing the updates. I usually use the Custom option in MS Updates to achieve this, but like the availability of an option to simply download the files and research the updates without having to have MS or Windows Update scan my computer (and go through all of the WGA checking and so on).

Yeah, WGA is a pain as I hardly ever use IE so to validate I have to run their manual 1.5MB validation tool. It's not a big download or hard to use, but I don't feel like I should have to prove over and over again that I acually own my copy of Windows.

By the way, press the "Show options" if you like me like to see the publish date for the updates :)

I've been using WinDiz for a few years with no problems. My understanding is that the downloads come directly from the Microsoft Update site - the WinDiz people sort out things like the Windows Genuine Advantage downloads and list updates in the critical, security, and driver areas.

Autopatcher I've never used for updates - I've used it to slipstream XP or XP SP1 with XP SP2.

nlite is good - it allows you to to create an (unattended, if you wish) Windows installation CD that leaves out any parts of Windows that you don't want installed, and it will include any updates and hotfixes that have been installed on your system to date.
There's an excellent tutorial here:
http://teamtutorials.com/windows-tutorials/how-to-make-a-custom-windows-install-w-nlite
with links to update packs with .NET framework included and a link to a site with info on what not to take out.  ;D

nlite doesn't download all in the updates in one go round though.

You can get all the downloads from the Microsoft Catalog Update:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog
This is not Windows Update.
This is where you can download updates etc. for most Microsoft products that bypasses Windows Update.

and there's an article in Microsoft Support on:
"How to download updates and drivers from the Windows Update Catalog"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323166

and last:
Microsoft Download Center: Help
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/render.aspx?displaylang=en&content=help

ahh, was a bit confused there for a bit -
I think you mean you used Autostreamer for slipstreaming XP & SP2?

I've been trying to use Autopatcher updates with nlite & well it doesnt work
Reading their forums it used to work at some stage but they dont seem to be compatible any more
ah well, will try RyanVMs

PS: I used nlite for one install already but made the big mistake of choosing to always login "my account" which I accidentally left as "user"
for some reason couldnt login as admin... loadsafun :D

EDIT: -
PS. thanks for those links & tips laughinglizard -
some good tips in that nlite tutorial!

Autostreamer is right Tomos, I'm always getting the two confused.

I haven't used Autopatcher. I stick to Windiz or go to the Windows Update Catalog if there is something that needs to be downloaded quickly.

I use a combination of RyanVM and DriverPacks (http://driverpacks.net/) to keep an up to date XP SP2 install DVD with drivers. No more digging for drivers all the time, woohoo!

do you use nlite or the RyanVM slipstreamer, (cant think of the name)

I havent had any success slipstreaming any updates with nlite so far -
I should really just give up on it but I find it hard to resist all those options nlite has...

In issue #144 of his SupportAlert Newsletter, Gizmo Richards (also a supporter of this site) mentions all of this and then some, but the neowin and autopatcher links are now moot, as PhilB66 just pointed out.  You have to subscribe to the Premium Edition to see the whole write-up, so I can't share it with you, but it was a follow-up to a mention in the free version, #128, that I think I can:

"2.4 Guide to Building an Unattended XP Install CD

This site offers a clear how-to guide with separate instructions for beginners, intermediates and advanced users. When completed you'll have an unattended Windows XP install CD that includes SP2 and all subsequent hot fixes.
http://unattended.msfn.org/"

I just "graduated" from Win 2000 to XP and remembered this as something to look into; maybe it will help...

To my understanding one page is saying I will need a fourth party program i.e. nLite to install these WUD (Windows Updates Downloader) downloads, but another page is saying that I don't.

So I ask you guys: Do I need anything more than WUD  to install / update?   :tellme:
Title: Re: download all updates for XP in one go?
Post by: Curt on September 01, 2007, 05:53 PM
I don't understand this. I have tried again and again to download this 'WUD' setup, but every time I am redirected (?) and getting http://wud.jcarle.com/Download.ashx?type=prog&id=23 which is similar to the front page "about": http://wud.jcarle.com/Default.aspx

What?  :tellme:

Edit: Strange; I got the file the first time I used Firefox instead of Maxthon. Problem (sort of) solved.

No, you don't need any other programs to install the updates. It simply downloads the hotfixes directly from Microsoft so as soon as you have it you just double-click the file(s).

As for the update lists, you can find them all on this page (http://wud.jcarle.com/UpdateLists.aspx) :)

CleverCat - I don't have this folder either, but it *looks* like it has something to do with migrating from one "thing" to another. Did you move from an older system to a new one, or upgrade from ME to XP, or something like that? Just a thought...

It contains security updates, and thus it seems it should NOT be removed (I wonder if CCleaner touches these ones). More information (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;824994)

$hf_mig$ does not contain uninstallers. All the $NtUninstallKBxxxxxxx folders are uninstallers for Windows updates and can be safely deleteted if you are not gonna need to uninstall them one day.

Doug Knox has a xp hotfix backup removal utility (http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_remove_hotfix_backup.zip).
Title: Re: download all updates for XP in one go?
Post by: Carol Haynes on September 02, 2007, 06:54 PM
Well it may not contain uninstallers but here is just one of 97 subfolders on my system:

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

89 subfolders contain a file called SPUNINST.EXE, which certainly look like an uninstaller, the other 8 folders are empty.

In this example the folder name refers to a Windows XP security patch (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=96BBD220-5E2A-43AD-B8B7-54EC608BD8BE&displaylang=en) which is applied to WinXP SP1 and SP2
