I need an OCR tool that is free. Sorry I have no budget for softwares nowadays. I tried Jocr but it is no good for me. Any more alternatives that DC users use daily?

Sometimes it's worked really well for me, at others, it's been, well, passe.

I've used SimpleOCR (http://www.simpleocr.com/) in the past. It does okay. All I needed was a text output for a client from a 2nd-generation photocopy. The periods came out as degree symbols ;D
I've heard good things about Softi FreeOCR (http://www.softi.co.uk/freeocr.htm) which uses the Tesseract OCR engine (http://www.softi.co.uk/freeocr.htm) that Google took over development from HP.

iirc [user]ronriel[/user] came up with AutoIt script called rOCR recently. worked quite well for me along side with jOCR.

From what I have heard Evernote has great OCR. Not sure if that is a viable option for your needs.

Evernote recognizes the tex but does not convert docs into text so the text in the documents are not selectable, convertable

Once I installed a trial of Microsoft Office 2003 (or was it 2007?). Anyway, when I had to uninstall it, somehow I managed to keep the "Microsoft Office Document Imaging" tool.
BTW, everyone who owns any part of Microsoft Office has this tool on his PC.
This is a marvelous OCR software. Incredibly fast and VERY accurate (powered by Scansoft).

In 2003 it was under the Office Tools menu in the Progams menu but it doesn't seem to be there in 2007?

Microsoft Office Imaging is a optional installation. In Control Panel,
Add/Remove Programs, select Microsoft Office and click on Change and then
select add features. You will find Office Imaging under Tools.

The best OCR Software I've seen is ABBYY FineReader (http://finereader.abbyy.com) (iirc it's the product the Danish national library uses to scan old texts), and it definitely worked well for us at the museum where I work(ed). Probably out of your price league, though - EUR159.

Thanks - I thought when I installed Office 2007 that I had installed all the tools!
