on digg.com
loads of waffle about some program completey inferior to 'farr'.
-
yep..
i think this is god's way of punishing me for not have v2 done by now :tellme:
-
it's their loss, mouser.
let them wallow in the mire...
-
True, farr is unbeatable in the windows launch programs, but that one does look good (only look, i don't know as far as the working part).
We are all eaguerlly awaiting farr v2, mouser, whenever you're ready, just bring it up, i'm sure everybody'll help in making this work!
-
let's see if we cant get farr v2 out this summer and take top prize.
people should see farr and say quicksilver - fooey!
-
by the way if it's any consolation to those who have been waiting..
farr v2 will have full plugin support as well as indexing. no doubt about it.
so hopefully the wait will be worth it.

Ok.. Now i'm dying with anticipation :trout:

IMO launchy has been succesful for two reasons - eye candy is the main one, and utter simplicity the second.
launchy is not bad, you can manage directories and extensions to search. The skinning engine allows alpha transparency. It doesn't use too much RAM (more than FARR though). It uses an index, and indeed the results come back faster than FARR.
It ain't close to FARR in terms of features, but then not everyone cares for features! :o
-
FARR is not usable for those who have dpi set larger than the default value.
edit: i just installed the lastest version, the problem is not that bad now, but still some words can be seen.
-
Hi all,
IMHO, Launchy is indeed quite good, a very good tool not as configurable as FARR (by far(r);)) but it is good
And yes it's faster ! i agree with nontroppo !
one thing that annoys me with FARR (is it possible :D) is that when you are a fast touch-typist (not sure of the name, pardon my english) FARR does not get the first few characters which i've never seen with AppRocket (the best before the FARR era) or Launchy
it's not a problem for me, FARR does not open instantly, but it would be more usable if i could just start typing without waiting for the FARR window to be completely opened
Cheers, Nico
PS: in case you are wondering, i'm not using the tray helper utility :P

Nico,
is the problem just when farr hasn't been running for a while, it takes a bit of time to start up and come to the front?
i.e. press break -> delay -> comes up -> close it -> press break again -> comes up right away?
so that if we could get it to come up as fast the 2nd time as the first, the problem would be solved?
this is actually an issue on my todo list and it has to do with farr being paged out of memory because it tells the system it's safe to do so. saves a little bit of memory but the plan is to add an option to disable this so it always loads fast.

Hi mouser,
i've tried many many times and i am under the impression that the alt+space is not as fast as the ctrl+space hotkey
Does that make any sense ?
and no it is not fast enough after the second time
I can just say that when i used AppRocket and Launchy, i've never noticed that behavior
I'll try remapping the alt+space to ctrl+space with autohotkey and make new tests, i'll get back to you
Cheers, Nico

i literally cannot type fast enough to launch farr, and type a key that it misses (at least after it has woken up from a deep sleep the first time), and i don't have a particulary fast pc, so it really shouldn't be a problem.. do try with dif. hotkeys, maybe that is the problem..
-
using launchy for a while, I have noted that it produces 100% cpu peaks for a while. I often kill it because I think it went brain-dead... it may be rebuilding the index, I don't know. It doesn't produce any disk activity. I think it's buggy (at least for me).

I also have that impression, i had some problems with the alt+space hotkey, but it works perfectlly with the ctrl+space. As for farr missing keypresses, i think that only happened to me when it was "woken from a long sleep"..
-
nitrix-ud: I think what you are noticing is that FARR searches anew each time. Try reducing the number of scanned directories (especially recent documents). FARR currently rescans directories on each key press. This will not be an issue for future versions as we hopefully will have some form of index.
-
i have an idea..
it may be the history items being refreshed.. especially if he has a long history.
try 2 things:
first, make sure you have the latest version, v1.09.04
https://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/findrun/index.html
and then try this, go to options and uncheck "blank search shows files from launch history" just for fun,
see if that speeds it up.
-
@mouser,
i already did that, ;)
@nontroppo,
scanned directories are minimal (start menu + favorites, default stuff), sometimes FARR does not get my first few keypresses using the alt+space, it has nothing to do with building the search list (i guess :))
-
it's just the alt+space then? if you use other hotkeys or break key the problem is not there?
