Title: What other forums do you participate in?
Post by: mouser on January 24, 2016, 06:42 AM
Have we ever asked this before.. What other forums on the internet do you participate in?

For me, DC is my only true home, but I do have an unhealthy obsession with my car (the codymobile (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=34761), purchased with help from DC members), which has led to my frequent posting on a forum dedicated to my car model: http://clubsx4.com/forum

How about you folks?

I participate on BoardGameGeek and RPG StackExchange.  I've given up on regularly visiting any others- it turns into a real time-suck.

Only the (Dutch language) machine embroidery forum (http://borduurmachine.forum2go.nl) my wife had me start for her when her then-most-visited msn group on the subject ceased to exist, 7 years ago.
I'm the technical admin, and the (mostly) ladies frequenting the forum keep stuff alive there, posting new made work, and appraising the work of others :)

Mainly music these days now that I've retooled myself and am not as into computer tech as I used to be...except for the slowly dying FOSS vision and hope for the future.

My biggies:

TalkBass.com
BassOutpost.com

For general conversation (although I'm nowhere near as active as I once was) it's my original cyber-hangout The Well (thewell.com) which is the oldest and still IMO best. Or at least it was best once my own BBS (Port Zero) shut down way back in the lost mists of time.

P.S. Sure is quiet around here lately. Seems to be missing a lot of familiar avatars. What's up with that?

I participate on Windows OS forums.  Mainly:
http://www.tenforums.com/
http://www.eightforums.com/
http://www.sevenforums.com/
http://www.vistax64.com/

Windows 10 I don't have a machine to install it on the metal.  And Vista the traffic is very sparse.  So participation is limited for me on those.  But I still try to solve issues on W8 and W7 forums.

Also for programming:
https://autohotkey.com/boards/index.php
https://www.autoitscript.com/forum/

I used to participate on he C based languages forums but it is too cumbersome trying to keep a hand in while working out of a suitcase.  The scripting launguages are more suited to quick and dirty Windows utilities.

I dropped out of circulation IRL years ago, and...
Being more than just a bit of a misanthrope...I'm really only active here.

I've been an "irregular" on talkbass.com, drumforum.org lumberjocks.com (http://lumberjocks.com/ayryq/projects), SimTropolis (http://community.simtropolis.com/profile/27712-ayryq/), and lately mytractorforum.com (http://www.mytractorforum.com/20-ford-new-holland-tractors/934642-74-ford-2000-introduction-thread.html). Separately I check classifieds but don't really participate at sawmillcreek.org, harmonycentral.com. '

I also just discovered that links with square brackets don't work in BBCode  :)

Other forums I participate in that I've just started as of late:

Geekhack, Deskthority, and though Reddit isn't really a forum, I participate in /r/mk fairly regularly.

I have a presence elsewhere, but the username is different and I don't want to be associated with it here.

I'll start. Once upon a time, a child got a new pencil for his first day of school. He didn't have a pencil sharpener, though, so he located a pair of scissors...

What is that?

I get a 404 when I try it out. Some sort of exclusive club, I guess. :P

It's a ghost post, not from me. Do you speak Ghost? Don't ask me what it says(Ghost is very mystical). The ghost substituted it for my post.

Well, I'm not sure if it can be called "participate", since I usually find what I'm looking for before asking a question, but Stack Overflow (http://stackoverflow.com/) and some of its related sites. Actually, I'm almost afraid to ask questions there  :-[

^ Yeah, I'm on a few of the SE sites.  Some are more welcoming and easier to get into than others it appears.  SO is just too overwhelming, and has way too much traffic flow for me to ever become truly comfortable doing anything but searching there.

The 'funniest' thing abut SO type sites is the ability of some to edit your question. Unless all those editors have super powers to clarify my dumb way of asking then sorry No. Yes I know some of the edits are for formatting but still that editing power is pointless at best imo.

It's actually not, and you see that once you can look from the other side.  It's not free-form editing, and the alternative, which is used a lot, is to put the question on hold/close the question.  That's what's used if there is a question of intent.  In most cases, when it says that the question was edited, it is because of formatting or tags.  And it's not just editing- the edits are peer reviewed.  And there is a strict rule of not changing intent unless you're the author.  It works, at least on the two SE sites that I have a high enough reputation to be a part of that side of things.

Look at this way, if I post a question on DC, if unclear or poorly formatted mouser is not editing it. There is no reason he should. SE, SO are not doing anything better or revolutionary by doing it, peer reviewed or otherwise.

The particular case that you're using to form your opinion, i.e. the question is unclear, they will vote to close.  Only in very specific instances is the text of the question edited.  Most of the edits are for tags.  It's just that it shows "edited" that is sometimes misleading.  We do the same here in regards to moderation.  Sometimes people put questions or things in the wrong place.  And they're moved, and a redirect is placed.  They don't have separate forums in SE.  They have tags for the same reason.  And most edits are for those.
