Title: RSS Feeds for DonationCoder.com and this Forum
Post by: mouser on July 07, 2005, 08:16 AM
You can now monitor new posts on this forum using any rss feed reader!

NEW: Add an rss feed for our blog (http://blog.donationcoder.com)!
https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?action=.xml;limit=10;sa=blogs;type=rss2
(without images: https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?action=.xml;limit=10;sa=blogs;type=rss2;images=0)

To add an rss feed for just the topics of this official announcement section:
https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?action=.xml;board=48;limit=20;sa=news;type=rss2

To add an rss feed for the new twice-monthly official newsletters:
https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?action=.xml;board=69;limit=10;sa=news;type=rss2

Default rss2 feed for 5 most recent posts on the entire forum:
https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?action=.xml;type=rss2

(you can use rss or leave off the entire ;type=rss2 part if you just want xml and not rss)

Or perhaps you just want the last 10 posts on a certain forum:
https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?action=.xml;sa=recent;board=2;limit=10;type=rss2

(you can substitute board=2 with board=X where X is the number of the subforum you want to monitor; just click to view that section from the forum and find board=XX in the url window)

Or just want the last 10 TOPICS (not posts):
https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?action=.xml;limit=10;sa=news;type=rss2

You can also restrict any of those lists to a specific USER by adding u=# to the url, or u=#,#,#,.. to restrict to multiple users posts.

For more help and alternate kinds of feeds you can subscribe to, see this post on the simplemachines forum:

To help facilitate the use of rss feeds we will also start announcing in Living Room section whenever a new review is up or a new program is released.

If people would like to see a specific official announcement section of the forum let us know.

want to rss read the donationcoder.com blog columns?
you can't subscribe to the single combined column, but you can subscribe to the individual columnists, just add these urls to your rss feed reader:

https://www.donationcoder.com/Columns/mts/b_jibz/index.rdf
https://www.donationcoder.com/Columns/mts/b_nudone/index.rdf
https://www.donationcoder.com/Columns/mts/b_vrgirl/index.rdf
https://www.donationcoder.com/Columns/mts/b_tenseiken/index.rdf
https://www.donationcoder.com/Columns/mts/b_mouser/index.rdf
https://www.donationcoder.com/Columns/mts/b_dragonrider/index.rdf

[EDIT: we have discontinued the blogs as of 11/05]

Found out about this site through Langa a couple of weeks ago and just joined-great service!  I don't want to be notified every time a new topic is posted in the forums, but I do want a feed that will tell me every time a new program is reviewed.  Is there a way to do this?

Thanks,
Jason

welcome to the site jason,

your request would be satisfied if we set up a special section of the forum for "official announcements",
like new reviews being posted, new software being released.
i.e. just the rare occasional official announcement.

probably not a bad idea; i think i will set this up unless people would prefer i don't.

the other solution would be to use a program like website watcher (see our review on webpage change monitors https://www.donationcoder.com/Reviews/Archive/WebWatchers/index.html), and have it monitor the reviews archive page or front page of the site.

There is now an OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT section on the forum.

To add an rss feed for just the topics of this official announcement section:

https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?action=.xml;board=48;limit=20;sa=news;type=rss2

Can someone tell me the URL for an RSS feed to get the last ten Subjects (topics?) in the 'Mini-Reviews by Members' Forum?

Thanks,
jdd
Title: Re: RSS Feeds for DonationCoder.com and this Forum
Post by: mouser on January 01, 2006, 12:31 PM
jdd:
https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?action=.xml;board=42.0;limit=10;sa=news;type=rss2

to get a different rss feed for the last 10 topics (subjects) from another section, just go to that section, observe the board=## and replace it in url above.

Shouldn't there be an "RSS" button in the header near "Home" "Search" "Profile" "IRC" ....
to this thread  ?

nice idea but we are running out of space for buttons..

there's an rss button at the very bottom of each page though - but it just takes you to this very thread :)

This thread has helped me again :)

I now use
https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?action=.xml;limit=15;type=rss2
to get the last 15 post on the entire forum.

The limit will most likely change though. Or maybe I'll try te feed for "all unread posts"... Anyway, I am again convinced that SMF is a very very good forum software! (Has anyone (mini-)reviewed SMF yet?)

Until mouser creates a feed for the Best of Blog, here is one you can use:

http://www.ponyfish.com/feeds/8678evDyoDwh

Sorry it won't give you any descriptions of the posts, just the headlines.

Mouser added an official one. See post below (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=496.msg89335#msg89335).

Title: Re: RSS Feeds for DonationCoder.com and this Forum
Post by: mouser on August 29, 2008, 08:41 PM
I've added some new parameters to make it easier for people to stick a useful widget-like feed on their website using an rss system.

with the sa=recent action listing RECENT POSTS, you can now add parameters:
u=4,5,6 (this says show all recent posts by users # 4,5, or 6)
tu=10,11 (this says show all recent posts made on topics started by users #10 or 11)
tl=1000,2000 (this says show all recent posts made on topics #1000 or 2000)

with the sa=news action which lists recent TOPICS, you can now add parameters:
u=4,5,6 (this says show all recent topics by users # 4,5, or 6)

Rss feeds now also obey same nofollow rules as posts.

Enjoy!

I have a dynamic blogroll that relies on RSS...

Every time a new thread is started on DC, it rises to top of the list, with a link to the thread, as a well as one to the main page of the forum. (I also have the DC blog added, too)

5 most recently updated blogs & forums are shown, along with a link to expand & show all. A very nice widget that Google recently added for use only on Blogspot blogs.

(I wouldn't click to show all on my blog, though...unless you have a lot of time to kill)

u=4,5,6 (this says show all recent posts by users # 4,5, or 6)

This is handy for anyone that uses FriendFeed (http://friendfeed.com), allowing you to add your posts here on DC to your lifestream.

Could you change the autodiscovery rss feed button to subscribe to what you're looking at mouser?
for example for this topic:
https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?action=.xml;limit=10;tl=496;type=rss2 to subscribe to just this topic.

If you're looking at the category listing on the forum homepage you can subscribe to the whole forum. Also on the boards listing change the link to subscribe to the board. that would make the feedicon after the url in firefox more useful.

At the moment when I want to subscribe to a topic I have to hack together an URL if I understand it correctly, so that's not ideal.

Subscribing to the blog doesn't work for me at all. I'm using feeddemon. The URL I'm using is
https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?action=.xml%3Blimit=10%3Bsa=blogs%3Btype=rss2
I see a list of posts from the day I signed up, and no new ones since. My most recent post is from March 2 - Comic Strip Generator - which now that I look I don't think it appeared on the blog. I subscribed by using the link on http://donationcoder.com/blog/ (http://donationcoder.com/blog/).

Help?

I was having the same problem but it seems to be better since I turned off "Synchronize this folder with NewsGator" under edit/folder properties.
I'll know better after I see if this post is picked up and how fast.  Just installed FeedDemon 2.7 earlier today.  I'm new to using RSS Feed readers so I need to make sure it isn't mostly operator error 1st.  :-[

Glad it helped!
I first tried making the change in the main subscriptions folder but it didn't seem to help much.  So I looked under properties of each of the invididual sub-folders they were still checked. Unchecked a couple of those and increased the update frequency and those folders update on their own instead of waiting for the feed to come from NewsGator.
I'm sure the sync tool is a nice feature for people who want to be able to check their feeds from different computers.  But my notebook is close enough where I am at home or on the road when I want to check, so it isn't a feature I really need.
To tell whether the folder is synched, look at the lower left corner of the sub-folder.  If there is what looks like to be a small orange circle, it is still synched.  A normal looking folder, it isn't.

You should add a help icon near the RSS feed icon at the bottom of this forum.  I think many people will not realize they can tweak the feed.  I forgot how to change the limit and remember that DC had done something in the past for it.

... For me in NZ, the main DCForum at URL <https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php>
http://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=mi9ekvt647tf1t4tbugu88svg7&type=rss;action=.xml
- seems to have somewhat erratically stopped feeding my BazQux feed-reader, which may be attributable to the delay in repopulating TCP/IP tables, or something.
At the same time, the usually less active DCForum Blog address at <https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php> seems to be broadcasting.
http://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?action=.xml;limit=10;sa=blogs;type=rss2
- Maybe they have swapped over somehow?

Sorry. Can't describe it better than that as I don't know the inner workings of BazQux, nor where its server(s) are located.

Ah, I think I understand the problem now - the RSS feeds would seem to have been somehow disabled/deleted/not included in the new CMS/website.
Are they going to be restored?
