Title: weather.com
Post by: cmpm on July 15, 2010, 08:57 PM
weather.com has changed their website

For anyone interested.
It's flagged as beta, but a much cleaner look.

They are still pushing the tray app download,
but I am not interested in that or any other weather tray deal.
I just click the website for my weather.

hamradio turned me on to http://www.intellicast.com
which has a fantastic radar display (see image at very bottom after you put in your zip code)

Thanks, I'll put it in next to weather and use both for a while,
to see which is more favorable.

Thx for the link. Some of the maps (Mood Index?) are particularly intriguing.

But then again, all maps fascinate me.  ;D

Normally, a forecast such as comes from http://goingtorain.com/ is closer to my speed.

(Just enter your zip code after the ending slash for your location.)

Here's what it says for Beverley Hills, CA (http://goingtorain.com/90210):

goingtorain.com (http://goingtorain.com/)

-is reading my pc's location, so there is no place to type my zip code. Should it be "USA only"?

this is what met me, before I could click or type anything:

ROFL - Mine too apparently - I just pinned the link to IE!

Personally I am partial to Accuweather.com.  I like that they have the forecast by hour instead of day, so I will know if I can ride my motorcycle to work without having a wet butt when I get out of work (even if it isn't raining when I go to work and when I leave work!)  ;D

Funny how 50mpg and 0 to 60 in 3sec go together so nicely on a bike isn't it... :)

Here in Florida it's not a question of if it'll rain it's what time of day it will rain. Local weather forcasts are usually next to useless as the clown on TV prattles on for so long about trivia you miss the actual forcast.

While I too have the AccuWeather gadget, (and frequently ride anyway depending on my call schedule) I have an appreciation for things that will give me a simple straight answer...So I'll be playing with 40Hz's link for quite some time.

Nice on all points.  Though I am curious to see how you can play with that site for quite some time.  There is only one configuration point (the zip) and an answer.  :D

LOL: I know what you mean, it just struck me as funny the way you worded it.

I prefer geoipweather.com (http://http:\\geoipweather.com)

Detects your location from IP and displays weather info retrieved from Weather.com

It probably never occurred to them that anybody but a US visitor would be happy with so simple a weather report.
 ;) ;D

)P.S.  You need to type the zip code directly into the address bar.)

Apparently my IP resolves to a different town that I'm in, so that's not much use to me.

Mine does too. Just add a slash and your zipcode (/012345) to the URL and you'll get your locality. (see my first post for example)

I got this response from Safari (or maybe AT&T) trying that link on an iPhone.

This is interesting because I just checked and have verified I don't have any active restriction settings enabled on this device.

Your page is blocked due to a security policy that prohibits access to category

Pretty weird huh?

Did it automatically connect to some nearby wi-fi?  That's the only explanation I can think of.  I have an iPhone also, and it goes to the URL fine.

@40hz:
+1 for wraith808's suggestion.
Maybe check proxy settings as well (no idea how to do this on an iphone)
Also try going to whatismyip.com and use the WHOIS lookup and see if you see anything interesting.
Are you using any third party DNS like OpenDNS?

@wraith808-

Bingo. This particular client's WAP is locked down so tightly (and excessively IMHO) that it's almost useless. Been a while since I dealt with a school. Forgot how paranoid net admins get in that environment.

Too bad I don't have anything to do with the wireless part of their network. Oh well. Somebody obviously got them to drink the "web is a dangerous place" koolaid.

Maybe they'll call you when they try to go to site X and it's blocked.  "Our network isn't working!  Can you come fix it for lots of money?"

^What actually happens is we get called by their systems boss when he's in over his head. We tell him what to do and he takes the credit for figuring it all out. And as long as the bill gets paid I have no problem with that.

According to Gerry Weinberg there's no limit to how much influence you can have - or how much money you can make as a consultant - so long as you don't care who ultimately gets credit for the solution. In short, you can have fame or "money and influence" - but not both at the same time with any single client.

I've found that to be pretty much the case in my work.  8)

That is nice, I now have five tabs open continuously for the weather...
Unfortunately they all say rain for a whole week ahead :o
