OK, not sure if this has been asked before (if so feel free to close topic), just its for a project I am doing, and the fact that I am looking to try new (good) software, so here goes.
What are the top 3 programs/games you use on a daily basis? (You don't need to post 3, just no more then 3 please)
EDIT: It would also help, if possible, to also link to the program (I need to install it myself for the project).
After a few days I will take down the apps/games and count them off, and the top 25 or so will get added my project, SimpleStart (easy starting of commonly used apps) that I am releasing later this month.
To start off, mine are...
Pidgin
Firefox
Halo 2 Vista
-
Hmm, Brandon, Brandon, Brandon, Made me think.. DAMN YOU! Umm, hmm I would have to say Pidgin, Opera, and Adobe Photoshop. :)
-
Cool post. For me, most basic are FeedDemon, The Bat, XChat.
-
mine are Opera, foobar2000 and .....FARR :D
-
Firefox, mIRC, and phpDesigner. :)
-
Hmm, Brandon, Brandon, Brandon, Made me think.. DAMN YOU! Umm, hmm I would have to say Pidgin, Opera, and Adobe Photoshop. :)
-Loki15
Wow Loki15, what do you do that you use Photoshop every day. I thought that was illegal.
Ken
-
I was wondering the same thing...its not like he does actual work ;D
-
This is hard for me to answer because I always have so much running and there are at least 40 that are running at all times for various reasons.
But if I had to pick 3 that I am always actively using and would be of interest to someone in 'the rest of the world' they would have to be these 3:
1. AOL Explorer browser
2. xchat
3. OpenPandora
-
it depends on what i'm doing, usually i will launch programs by categories - web-browsing, word processing, music & movies, gaming & etc.. but off the cuff, it will look something like this:
• 1st i pay homage to this program called Farr, you might have heard of it.. :)
• then the ubiquitous Firefox.
• and finally the indispensable Altap Salamander.
-
- Opera
- Serious Samurize
- MultiMon Taskbar
-
opera
acrobat
onenote
of course, Total commander is always open, but doesn't get used that much in terms of time with windows on focus.
Vim gets outbursts when I'm programming.
-
UltraRecall
ClipMate/ClipCache
FireFox
-
firefox
gom player
notepad (yes, I am to lazy to use notepad++ which is installed on my computer)
-
- Website Watcher (http://www.aignes.com)
- Mirc (http://www.mirc.com)
- Launchbar Commander (https://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/LaunchBarCommander/index.html)
-
Not including programs that run in the background,
1. xplorer2
2. K-Meleon
3. GreatNews
-
In no particular order:
Outlook 2003
Maxthon 1.6
EDIT: Don't know how I missed DOpus 9!
For the final app, it's a toss up between:
Evernote 2.1
Word 2003
ZuluPad Pro
-
Awesome, keep the programs coming!
Firefox and Opera have places in the program guaranteed, FARR and Xchat might also. (Maxthon is included, but only 2.0)
-
- ZTree (http://www.ztree.com)
- Ditto (http://ditto-cp.sf.net)
- Opera (http://www.opera.com)
-
without any doubt (and in no particular order) :
Directory Opus http://www.dopus.com
Autohotkey http://www.autohotkey.com
and of course FARR :D
-
Opera
FARR
Tie between AceText/ArsClip
-
Hmmm, only three, tough one... Let's say :
- Photoshop
- Firefox
- Autohotkey (because i use it to enhance other programs i use, including Photoshop)
And FARR to launch all of the above (and more) :D
-
I'd say FireFox, TheBat, NotePad++.
Most of my mail is forum reply notifications though, so if we count those out we could switch TheBat with explorer^2 (http://zabkat.com/) - yes, for some reason, I spend a lot of time copying files around and whatnot :)
Listing a web browser is pretty much "duh", so perhaps I should replace that with MSN (or Miranda, really) instead. Keep it running most of the time, though whether it's the most-used app changes depending on what I'm actually doing - some days it just sits idly in the background, mostly.
A couple of years ago mIRC would have been a solid #1, but now I only log on a couple of times a week.
Oops, that was more than three, I'm afraid :-[
-
1. EditPad (Pro / Lite) => text editor
2. GreatNews => RSS aggregator
3. GreenBrowser => IE clone
-
The Bat!
Website Watcher
Copernic Desktop Search
-
Lately
& excluding Freehand (vector drawing app) which I use for work,
I would say:
DOpus 8
Surfulater
Evernote as well, even though as I get to use it more I'm not that crazy about it
Firefox get's left out cause it's bugging me at the mo (I'm really an opera fan but cause of Surfulater..)
I know you said only three but I cant leave out instant boss from app
-
Damn, it's hard to chose 3!!
I think the three that are most used would have to be
- FARR (https://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/findrun/index.html) - THE launcher
- Opera (http://www.opera.com) - THE browser (please, please, no flames...)
- Autohotkey (http://www.Autohotkey.com) - For the all-around needs. From organizing windows (http://jgpaiva.dcmembers.com/gridmove.html) to having the escape key close windows :)
Winamp (http://www.winamp.com) and windows live messenger (http://messenger.live.com/) are always on too, but not used as frequently.
There are others i use everyday during school period, though.
-
Just 3? Now that's a difficult question to answer, seeing as I always have much more than that running. Well, I'll try to answer anyway I suppose :)
1. Opera (http://www.opera.com/) - For absolutely all of my browsing and e-mail needs.
2. E Text Editor (http://www.e-texteditor.com/) - Quite possibly the best thing since sliced bread. Text editors doesn't get better than this (on Windows at least).
3. Directory Opus 9 (http://www.gpsoft.com.au/) - Don't know how I ever lived without it in the past.
There are of course other applications I use just as much, and I feel kinda bad having to leave them out of such a list :(
-
Top 3 : Very Tough call
1. Powermarks
Powermarks: Bookmark Manager and Personal "Instant" Search Engine
"This is the ultimate browser bookmark organizer"
http://www.kaylon.com/power.html
2. File-Ex
Cottonwood Software: File-Ex and Windows Utilities for Power-Users

3. Slickrun
How do I describe this : Launcher
http://www.bayden.com/slickrun/updates.asp?l=en&ver=3.9.8.3
3a. Firefox IE replacement http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
3b. FARR Find and Run Robot https://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/findrun/index.html
3c. DOPUS Explorer Replacement http://www.gpsoft.com.au/
3d. Evernote A single place for all your notes http://www.evernote.com/en/
3e. Oops, Maybe we should have Top Ten instead.
Hmm, maybe all of us should put a short description and a URL to make it easier for the rest of us.
-
3a. Firefox
3b. FARR
3c. DOPUS
3d. Evernote
3e. Oops, Maybe we should have Top Ten instead..

Cheater! :P

Good point, i'll edit my post to add that. ;)

Seems there's no reason to mention Antivirus, Firewall, Antispyware programs, or Process Tamer!, - so my answer is Outlook 2003, Maxthon 1.6, RealPlayer 11 Beta, and Volumouse, - and PS Tray Factory, PS Hot Folders, True LaunchBar, M8 Clipboard, FastStone Capture + Viewer, and Process Explorer, and...
-
1) Pidgin
2) Mozilla Thunderbird w/ Lightning
3) Opera/Firefox
-
Constantly running: bash (quite a few instances), sshd, screen, irssi (x20), icecast, ices2 (x2)
Top 3 apps that I use:
1) irssi (via ssh, then screen)
2) vi
3) firefox
if I could put 4, thunderbird would be there, but I hate email anyway, so I really don't care :D

About those posts above.. I actually do do graphics, and whats illegal about it??

wreckedcarzz: since your project is called SimpleStart and it is for "easy starting of commonly used apps", wouldn't it be like Farr or LaunchBar Commander? just wondering.. :)
-lanux128
Somewhat, just with a really REALLY basic way of doing it. It doesn't have a fancy GUI like LBC or FARR, though.
-
1) Pidgin
2) Mozilla Thunderbird w/ Lightning
3) Opera/Firefox
-Laughing Man
Already listed, I use all 3 myself ;D
-
1) Maxthon/Opera
2) Windows live mail & messenger
3) Notepad++
Darn, I have many more than only 3
-
Difficult to narrow the list down, BUT...
Aside from Firefox and its open tabs [gmail, yahoo mail, word press, google reader -- all geared to my blog], I use as a writer:
1 -- EssentialPIM Pro 2.0
2 -- KeyNote [gathering/organizing information for future articles/books]
3 -- Word 2003 [with Chapter by Chapter add-in]
-
Things like evernote an organizer pop peeper to check for mail and farr and a clipboard all start at startup and are used just as required, things I need, but as for the ones i actually start from choice,
Firefox is by far the most used
Word 2003
Idea Mason and Roughdraft (equal now)
-
Hmmm... Grrrr...
Ok - 1 problem with this thread - Browsers & Email clients - They're always going to be in there and not very interesting. I wish the topic were "Top 3 programs you use Plus your Email client & Browser..."
So, mini-rant over... errr... Almost... Opera and Outlook Express and Outlook and Firefox and IE... I hate having to use them all and wish I could settle on just one - not possible unfortuneately...
Oh - 1 more thing - Windows Explorer or replacement. It's not possible to use Windows without it. Ok - it's "possible", but very difficult... I use Windows Explorer... Too lazy to bother testing the trillions of replacements out there. Ok - there - mini-rant is 100% over.
Soooo.... Top 3 that I use:
1) Editplus (http://www.editplus.com/) - For everything!
2) Visual Studio Professional (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/aa718668.aspx) - For programming of course!
3) ALSong (http://www.altools.net/ALTools/ALSong/tabid/58/Default.aspx) - I listen to music all day long, everyday!
-
Renegade ranted:

Agreed!
Allow me to amend my top 3:
1. Directory Opus
2. ClipMate 7 ( :-[ sorry mouser!)
3. Roboform
-

-Loki15
As a joke ken was probably suggesting that you must be in the business of beautifying a lot of, ahem…. pictures???
Now, about the top 3 programs...?? This is just very difficult to answer without more precise parameters. And the others are right: it's hard to escape MS explorer (or replacements-- am considering Directory Opus), browsers (am using Maxthon), etc.
Anyway... if excluding the above and many others, the programs that I seem to be using the most ("timewise"... does that exist??), actively (so, no antivirus, firewall, etc.), are :
- Farr (because... it IS the best. :) Launchy and the other "launchers" are a lot less powerful, sorry... ;) )
- Clipboard Help + Spell (because it does everything I need in a clipboard enhancer...)
- MS Word 2003 (because I live in it... In Maxthon 1.6, X1, AHK and Outlook 2003 too, should I add... But... only three, only three....)
An unfair list, for sure... (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/esmileys/gen3/1Small/cenzor.gif) As these won't do much without at least 10 other essential -- or at least vey important... -- pals.
-
Renegade ranted:

Agreed!

I double Agree... so let's see:
1. LaunchBarCommander (https://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/LaunchBarCommander/index.html) [Get's me into applications]
2. RoboForm [Get's me into sites]
3. Then comes the long list of productivity applications, the top being, um, ummmmm: PSPad (http://www.pspad.com) would be involved in most aspects of what I do I'd think?
-
Giving it some more thought, and after considering a few things about the purpose of providing this list of applications, I would have to revise it to not include anything that loads at startup, since it's research for some type of application launcher.
Since it has been suggested to leave out the boring browsers and email clients, I am going to have to change the entire list.
Here are the top 3 things that I use that are not a browser or email client, do not load at startup, aren't launched automatically from within or by another application, and are instead launched manually by some sort of shortcut:
1. Windows Live Writer (best desktop blogging application I have ever used)
2. Notepad 2 (I click the icon to open that more times a day than I can count)
3. Paintshop Pro
(I just took the top 3 that qualified for the revised list from my wakoopa profile (http://wakoopa.com/app103/usage))
-
Top three excluding browser and email.
1 . ToDoList (http://www.codeproject.com/tools/ToDoList2.asp) (keeps my life semi-organized)
2. Stickies (http://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/stickies/) (post it notes for the desktop, un-organized stuff)
3. GoodSync (http://www.goodsync.com/index.html) (thumb drive sync program, just started using, love it)

Good point App: I have not had Wakoopa installed for some time, but looking back and using your non-auto start suggestion I'd have:
1. MS Visual Studio
2. PS Pad
3. MS Excel (How could I forget all the time I spend on Excel?)
-
Lately it's been:
1. Firefox
2. Windows Explorer (always have at least one open)
3. mIRC
-
Windows Explorer? Not using an alternative file manager? oh boy oh boy :O
-
Top three...
1. Total Commander
2. Find And Run Robot
3. WebSite-Watcher
Probably in that order, too.
-
0. Firefox. Ok, browsers have been banned, but it's really the first application i start, so:
1. VMWare Server
2. FARR
3. Eclipse
-
The browser and emailers that don't count: Firefox, Thunderbird, and Becky.
1. Powerpro (http://www.pcrei.com/ppro/files/index.html) - strange nobody mentioned it yet. It's a freeware swiss army knife sort of program, combining launchbar, clip tracking, note taking, window manipulation, scripting and many other things in one.
2. MS Word (now using ver. 2007). That's what I use to earn my bread.
3. Beyond Compare. Can't live without it. (Directory Opus -- my newest shareware acquisition -- might take over this spot in a few weeks.)
-
Direct Access (http://www.nagarsoft.com)
Xplorer2 lite (http://zabkat.com/x2lite.htm)
Launchy (http://www.launchy.net/)
and Firefox.
-
It's hard to pick up only 3, it is.
But after some consideration I finally would choose:
1. Wolfram Mathematica (5.2 and 6)
2. DOpus 9
3. WebSite-Wathcer
(all are legal before you ask :) )
There would be some other tools I use on regular basis but these are the most important ones among those...
-
looking at these programs it seems to me you need to change the question a bit. I find it unlikely that anyone, except perhaps mouser, actually uses FARR for more than a few seconds at a time, yeah sure its a convenient way to launch a program but wouldn't what's launched be of more interest? Maybe if you had a few categories, Favourite launcher, file/directory explorer, browser, other utilities, and most used program apart from those categories. Just a thought.
-

-Grorgy
This makes sense, but then... How many categories?
It could be simplified to the top necessary things - browser, email client, Windows Explorer/replacement - then go on to very broad categories like "background programs or programs that mostly run in the background", utilities, applications.
e.g. FARR would be a utility, an alarm clock would be a background program, something like a music player *mostly* runs in the background, while an audio editor is clearly an application.
That would limit the number of categories to a very small number.
Depends on the info that the OP wants/needs.
-
Mozilla Firefox
Microsoft Outlook
StreetSmart Pro

*screams* (OK, not really)
OK, well somehow without going insane I have managed put every single program name into my little (or not) notepad file, and am going to organize them and see what ones I can take out. Firefox, Opera, Maxthon (2, sorry but you should update anyways...), Thunderbird, FARR are all going to be in my app guaranteed, and it looks like Explorer (Windows), Xplorer2, and a couple others will be too. Its gonna be a pain making this down to the top 25. Hopefully more people will submit programs, I have about 5 more days until I plan to put this up for download.
-
sorry but you should update anyways..
Why? Both 2 and 1.6 are based on the IE engine and 1.6 runs fine on top of IE7. There are no security advantages to using M2 that are meaningful and I can't think of any reason to upgrade until all of the features currently in 1.6 are available in 2.
-
Easier to use, seems to open quicker, 1.6 will be obsolete soon anyways, and a newer interface. I used the beta releases of version 2 and I would never switch back from them to 1.6. Maybe I am just the type who absolutely has to have the most resent version :-\. I may include 1.6 support in SimpleStart, but IMO it is best to update everything asap.
-

I read the initial question more or less as "The 3 applications you like most", i.e. Top 3 as in 3 favourites. FARR is one of them, so...
I probably should have LiteStep in there, btw, although it's a bit different from all the other software.
-
Except for Farr and Launchbar commander:
1. URL organizer2
2. Clipmate
3. Rapid Deployment
-
1. Launchy :-[ (only coz it's 'prettier' than FARR)!
2. Object Dock - best launcher I ever had.
3. DesktopX (I have the Object desktop Suite)
-
Heh, heh, fair enough Brandon! I'd move to M2 if the plug-ins I love were available (they're not, for now) and I'm certainly not free of the "must have latest version now!" implulse.
Clevercat - have you ever tried Enhanced File Dialog? It's part of the ObjectDesktop suite (and ONLY available as part of the suite - I've asked, a couple of times...) and is 1. the best open/save dialog extender I've tried and 2. the only Stardock app I run all the time. Love Object Dock, too, but it's been rendered redundant by TrueLaunchBar (http://www.truelaunchbar.com). I still keep the latest version of OD Plus installed (beta at the moment) but don't know why, really.
-
Well... I decided to take another stab at configuring M2 to my liking and have succeeded. Other than the resource usage, I'm satisfied and am using it as my default browser for the moment. How I managed it can be read here (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=9316.msg71623#msg71623).
-
Only top 3? How can i express my self with such limitations? ;D Well I'll give you my top 5.. :D
AceText, - text & clipboard companion, AceText - text & clipboard manager (for coders, writers, etc.) (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=4672.0)
Foobar, - a fast no-frills, but powerful music player
Firefox, - solid web browser, you know you can do all sorts with web browsers these days ;)
xplorer² -xplorer², a powerful windows file manager and explorer replacement / alternative (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=9493.0)
farr, - just gotten to know aliases a bit more personally .. :) def. one of my favorite tools!
-

so is the verdict ready? i'm eager to find out top three programs used by the DC community.. :)
-
wreckedcarzz - perhaps it's time to compile the apps and set up a poll? This is more for the community than for your app, but it would be very interesting!
-
1. FARR
2. Opera
3. Xplorer²
-
1. blackbox for windows, theres no way i cud use a pc without it.
2. x2

Just to clarify, I meant compile a list of the apps mentioned in this thread and pick, say, the top 10 or 12 and then run a poll asking people to pick the top three from the list that they use...

yes, this would give a more accurate result since the earlier response included browsers (including myself), emails apps & etc..

CCleaner

o yeah 'talkshoe'.
Check it out for podcasting, it has a cool interface except for the chat.
But it's mainly for talking conference style.

Oh lord, I just opened up this topic after like a week of not looking at it... :'( ;D
Darwin, I will setup the poll after I determine the top few apps, apparantly I have another 2 pages worth of sorting to do to see what the top few are (probobly top 5, maybe top 10?).
I honestly didn't expect so many replies, but more is always better

Cool - I'll love,er, look forward to it (though I'm sure I'll love it too!). Should be very interesting.
-
I use Opera, FeedDemon, and Post2Blog the most. Of those three FeedDemon is the only one that's not free, but in my opinion anyone that is addicted to RSS feeds needs a powerful feed reader like FeedDemon.
-
FARR
Firefox
extract now http://www.extractnow.com/
-
1st thing is IE7, then Musicovery (this is a MUST ) then Outlook and sort my mail!! Boring I know, but.
-
:D Here's my list:
1. foobar2000
2. Firefox
3. Directory Opus 9
-

-
yes, i'm curious too.. a brief description will be nice.. :)
-
1. Directory Opus
2. AI RoboForm
3. Find and Run Robot

I use the following on a daily basis:
Firefox v2.0.0.6
PowerDesk Pro 6
ClipMagic v3.32
-
As a browser, I mostly use Opera, and am very satisfied with it, but I would not put any browser in a top 3 program list, as browsers are ubiquitous nowadays. So here is my top 3:
1. Robomaker by Openkapow (generate RSS feeds by stripping html from web pages)
2. RSSBandit (to read those RSS feeds). One of my favourites, although there is still room for improvement.
3. NetTransport, excellent and robust file/stream download manager.
This top3 has been quite stable for me at least for the past 6-12 months.

OK, I am going to take a stab at continuing my ever-lasting list of programs here, i have 3 pages now...this wont be difficult...not at all :P
As soon as I get the list done (about 30 mins or so) I will post a poll on the most popular programs. Looks like Firefox, DOpus and FARR are in the top couple (if I remember correctly).

OOWriter

Added poll based on top 9 programs, I am suprised at the tie!
Vote away and lets see what one wins (FARR has 14 users for the top 3, 5 more then DOpus!)

What does Celtx have over Final Draft and Movie Magic? This is the first time I've ever heard of it, tho I keep my eye open for such things. I'm very curious -- as a writer, too

OK, by popular demand: Chapter by Chapter -- or CbC, for short!
CbC essentially manages a book manuscript, which is kept in separate chapter files. This add in, which works as a small separate program, sits on top of Microsoft Word.
Once CbC is open, one enters a new chapter title, which opens up a blank page in Word, where one writes or imports a chapter, or at least the beginnings. Then start another chapter, and so on. Soon CbC displays in its window a list of all your chapters, all stored in sepapate Word files, including word count for each one. One can drag and drop each chapter into a different order, rearranging one's book. And if one needs to see the entire book in one file, a click of the mouse brings them all together in a single file, where one can do editing, paginating, change format to suit a particular publisher.
I'm working on a huge book project. I've tried so many different programs to manage the project -- and I always return to CbC. And it's free.

Hey!!! thanks so much, Tom. :-*
It's already late here, but I'll have a look at CbC right away. Sounds like a greeeaaaat add-in.
It could actually be part of the solution to one of my big summer problem -- see the thread Working with (display+format+restructure) big amount of data (text+graphics)? (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=9205.0)
-
Lots of what I use was already listed by others --- so in the hopes of getting some of the less well known stuff listed.
FlashDesktops (http://www.flashdesktops.com/) -- makes X-Windows switching feel slow when I am on Unix, the best desktop switching tool I have come into contact with on ANY Platform.
Hoekey (http://www.bcheck.net/apps/hoe.htm) -- makes keybindings to do ANYTHING. From hitting the next button in iTunes, to vertically maximizing a window, to shutting down windows. Kinda complex to learn, but shockingly powerful.
True Launch Bar (http://www.truelaunchbar.com/) -- quick launch bar -- on crack and roids. It is a system monitor (cpu / mem / volume control / wireless signal), random place to put stuff (weather applet, clock applet) / super-launch bar.
... I felt really limited only getting to choose three... so I am cheating (vim rules! http://vim.sf.net)

Well, truth be told, aside from FF, I use Photoshop, CoolEdit Pro, and Directory Opus on one or another machine. Oh yeah, Office 2003...
Okay, I keep all my $ware disks in a box under my bed labeled "Playboys and porn"! Fact is, I use dozens of freewares daily; the heavy duty stuff is for production work. "It isn't easy being green."
I prefer to use freeware, but there are some things that just work more efficiently with commercial software.

I agree. My top three programs are
1) Clipmate 7 http://www.thornsoft.com/ (if I had to pick just one program, this would be it)
2) Directory Opus 9 http://www.gpsoft.com.au/ (an amazing replacement for Windows Explorer)
3) A tie between Active Words http://www.activewords.com/ (a macro program on steroids) and Powermarks http://www.kaylon.com/power.html (the best bookmark manager I know)
I also LOVE my email program, Mulberry http://www.mulberrymail.com/ (the best IMAP client I know, and I've tried lots). If I weren't separating out email clients, I'd put Mulberry up there as my #3 pick.

Yes, Powermarks is still very much alive. Their most recent versions have been for making Powermarks work with Firefox. I downloaded build 387 early this year, probably to make Powermarks compatible with Firefox 2.
-
wreckedcarzz - perhaps you *should* add a "none of the above" option as there will be (probably a majority of) peope who do not use any of the listed apps and whose votes will not therefore be recorded. Afterall, the point of the poll is simply to get an idea of the most commonly used applications; a none of the above option will reflect this better.
-
Armando, thanks for referring me to your other thread -- lots of interesting commentary there. The problem you describe there is EXACTLY the one I've been struggling with for over a year -- along with the additional requirement to track my growing bibliography.
I use askSAM myself, but now only for a database about Philippine monuments. I just couldn't get it to do what I wanted, when it came to my book research project. I'm now working with the new version of Biblioscape 7 -- now up to version 7.14, which seems to have fixed the bugs that were bothering me a few weeks ago. And, as a result of this forum, I've just started using WhizFolders, which I hope will allow me to bring countless word, pdf and data files together. We'll see...
Darwin, CbC isn't just for book start up. I was already well into my project when I discovered it. I cut & pasted all my chapters done up to that point into CbC. I've discovered that even at the advanced stage of my work, I still move things around a bit -- and CbC makes that simple. Also I like the chapter-by-chapter word count, which gives me a good sense of how far along I am. Perhaps the most useful feature is one I haven't yet needed -- the ability to meld lots of separate chapter files into one single document, available for serious work -- pagination, headers-footers, endnotes, indexing, etc.
I am still searching for an easy way to save "versions" as I move along with each chapter.
Mouser, will be very interested to read your evaluation of CbC after you've had a chance to play around with it.
I'm amazed at how little information there is available about the various approaches to the problems Mouser describes. Certainly, many writers face the same challenge -- but no one seems to have explored this problem and come up with several well-outlined options writers might follow.

Thanks TomColvin - I'll take another look at CbC. I use WordToys (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Office-tools/Other-Office-Tools/WordToys.shtml) to help plug some of the holes in Word 2003 (I like the workspaces concept, for example) but CbC might prove useful afterall.

It wasn't that hard ;)
I searched for "meskalin software" and the first link I found was this: http://www.xbeat.net/meskalin/
It seems to be another program of Don (the author of XYplorer). As the website states "A brand-new imaging software that leaves no panty dry" :P
-
the project seems to have ended in a dead-end.. it is stated there that "Meskalin will hit the market on October 1st 2004." but there is no links anywhere.. anyway, i'm none the wiser.. :)
-
It's not a question of being "hard" or not, it's just that nobody wants to spend time looking for software on Google when you don't even know what it's all about. Therefore, this link (http://www.xbeat.net/meskalin/) doesn't really give any information about Meskalin (no info, no download).
-
I searched for "meskalin software" and the first link I found was this: http://www.xbeat.net/meskalin/-ad-min
Yep, that's it. Sorry about stirring up this excitement about Meskalin. I was not aware that posts here are read that carefully.
Meskalin is nothing but a little screen loupe I wrote for myself but never published. I use it all the time to check color values and other graphic details. It also has some interesting recursive functions that generate near-chaotic psychedelic effects -- hence the name. If there's interest I can post a download link (freeware, but no support, no help file!...).

I'm not completely certain I understand what you're asking. The time you spent working in any application is recorded online, but not what you did in that app. It then makes pretty graphs showing how you're misspending your time.

Now that I have had this new pc for some months, and reset my wakoopa account so it will reflect only the software I run on here, it's time for a new list.
Excluding browsers, email clients, and anything that loads at startup (including being handled by my own lacuna launcher (http://appsapps.info/lacunalauncher.php) at startup), these are the top 3:
1. Notepad2
2. Paintshop Pro
3. Delphi
The order has changed (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=9503.msg71353#msg71353), and WLW was replaced by Delphi. I guess that means I am writing more code than words, these days. :)

I voted xplorer2 because I have it set to start up with Windows and it stays open all day.
Of course, file-shuffling is much of the activity of my day, so it's no wonder.
Second is Outlook because much of my work comes in via email and the boss would not like me switching to Firebird.
Everything else gets opened with FARR, so it's a close but definite third.
If only there were an xplorer2 for my Linux box at home, I would be an order of magnitude happier. :-*

Same here though, there are more often than not the same set of 15 programs running (besides a browser that has some tabs with web-interfaces open too).

With "top" meaning favourite most used. It's hard for me to say just 3 when I have at least the same 15 to 20 running all day, every day.

The free version was always good enough for most uses.

So it is.
Before, I just got this when I googled:
Viagra Same Day Delivery: Strongest Pill Ever
www.mytreedb.com
order cialis paypal. \"TreeDBNotes. get cialis very cheap · viagra nhs prescription · cialis overnight new york · ebay viagra · retail pharmacy price cialis ...
And this one failed at the purchase link.

Very glad it is still there. I rarely use it now, but still have fond memories.

Yeah, for TreeDBNotes, I started using it years ago when KeyNote stopped being developed (someone else picked it up, but the updates are few and small). I have so much data in those TreeDBNote books that I can't change anymore! haha I have the Pro version, but it's not very useful for anything beyond the notes pages anyway, and I agree, the free version does everything. I've written dozens of times to the authour, but he hasn't answered me except maybe once or twice in all the years.

Maybe there were too many two-pane organisers for the market to bear, as there appears to be a winnowing going on. You're reporting TreeDBNotes development moribund. The entire Treepad family (including the popular freeware Treepad Lite) and associated Freebyte site have gone from the web. Smereka TreeProjects (http://personaldatabase.org/try.html) appears to be freeware. Jot+ Notes (http://kingstairs.com/jot/) has just been declared freeware. Still plenty of others, of course.

I think TreeDBNotes most recent version is 2015, and there had been only tiny changes for some years before that.
I remember some vehement argument and criticism in the forum for a year or two before it was closed down. Many posters arguing for more PIM features. I thought they were wrong, and that more could be done to develop the text editor, whichh I believed was always its best feature.
I think there were too many organisers, but I think that the major problem was that the market simply moved away from the concept. Developers took themselves into a PIM cul-de-sac, and had nowhere to go when better answers to the PIM need arrived. Very few people want purely local anymore.

This also relates to DoogiePIM in the sense that an Android version was to come but was pushed back in favour of more focus on the local program....imo not coincidentally development has slowed somewhat

It has. Came back from the dead, frequent updates at start, but much slower now.
Quite a few things on the list to be addressed haven't been (yet). Forum pretty inactive. I've not bothered installing the latest update yet. The code might have been rewritten, but there really aren't many changes from GemX in the way it works. But it does what it does and keeps on going, which may be enough. I don't think there would be enough money to justify an Android version of such a huge program.
Ultra Recall was almost left to die but has been revived. Updates aren't cheap though.

Wow, I didn't mean to hijack this "Top 3 programs" thread. I seem to always do that...
I've never heard of TreeProjects or Jot+ Notes - I checked them out, but they aren't as versatile as TreeDBNotes. Thanks for the links for those, though!

Here you go:
1. Neovim (or more generally vim): just can't use a computer without it. Always the first program I download on a new machine (then I git-clone my config files)
2. Autohotkey
3. Clipboard H+S
Just a few more which are pretty good contenders for my top-3:
4. Irfanview
5. ProtonVPN
6. git
7. The Bat
8. Crashplan
9. Firefox
10. Brave
There are a few more, but let's stop here for now.

Reading through recent entries I realise the I use FARR and CH+S constantly. I do so almost without thinking, their usefulness is so ingrained.
