Title: Error EX4: DBISAM Engine Error #11013
Post by: laymanmarcus on March 02, 2011, 09:44 AM
When trying to install Clipboard Help & Spell on my PC at work (Windows 7) I got the following message on startup:

Error EX4: DBISAM Engine Error #11013 Access denied to table or backup file 'ClipTable'

Whenever I click on the CH+S icon in the system tray this error also appears and each time does so twice.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Marc D.

Is it a new install and did you use the installer?
Can you get into the program options dialog?

EDIT 4/23/15 - SUMMARY OF ISSUE DISCUSSED BELOW:

If you get an error like "DBISAM Engine Error #11013" there are two possible causes:
An antivirus/security tool blocking CHS access to it's database file.
The CHS configuration/database files being on a network drive.

For more information see: https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=25938.0

SOLUTION 1: Add the CHS \Database and Database\Temp directory to your antivirus exclusion list so that your antivirus engine does not lock these files.

These directories will be in your config directory for CHS, which is located by default:
on Windows Vista and Win 7: \My Documents\DonationCoder\ClipboardHelpAndSpell\Database\ and \My Documents\DonationCoder\ClipboardHelpAndSpell\Database\Temp\
on Windows XP and earlier: \Program Files\ClipboardHelpAndSpell\Database\ and \ProgramFiles\ClipboardHelpAndSpell\Database\Temp\

SOLUTION 2: Add CHS to the allowed list of your security application.

SOLUTION 3: If your documents are stored on a network drive, edit the ConfigDir.ini file in your C:\Program Files x86\ClipboardHelpAndSpell directory, and set the configuration path to a local directory.

Yes, used the installer.
Yes, I can get into options / preferences.

Try pressing the "View or Repair Database" button on the "Backup/Maintenance" tab of options:

I tried that and it generated another error. Tomorrow I will also try to do a complete uninstall and reinstall and see if that helps.  If it does the same, I can get the error that comes up when I try to repair database and send it along.

complete uninstall wont help, but what will is if you simply exit and delete your database files for CHS.
but it would help to know the error you get when you run a repair.

OK.. More info. Did the reinstall and still didn't work, but have the progression of errors .
Error 1: When launching the program

Error EX4: DBISAM Engine Error #11013 Access denied to table or backup file 'ClipTable'

Error 2: After clearing the first error

Error DB65: DBISAM Engine Error #11010 Table or backup file 'GroupTable' does not exist

Error 3: After attempting Verify/Restore backup.

<Same error as Error #2>

Error 4: When exiting the program

TableClips: Field 'Index' not found

I checked in the Backup and Database directory and all that was there were the "Read Me" files, which explains why it can't find these files, but not sure about why there is nothing there.

Post by: mouser on March 28, 2011, 11:39 AM
the consensus seems to be that this is caused by interference with the database engine temporary files by an antivirus program.

what operating system and antivirus program do you guys use?

(could also be caused by realtime backup software?)

a solution might be to exclude the database directory from scanning or move it.

now, if the database file has in fact been corrupted by this, you will have to exit CHS and delete the CHS\database files and restart.  these files are in the my documents\donationcoder\chs\database directory on windows vista/win7 or in the program files\chs directory on winxp.

I'm on Win XP Professional and I am forced to use Trend Micro OfficeScan (company policy). I have tried to add CHS as an exception (trusted program), but I cannot exclude the Database directory.

I quit CHS, deleted everything in the Database folder, restarted, and the error reappeared on the first copy action.  :(

Let's try telling CHS to save its database in your MyDocuments directory instead of in program files and see if that makes your antivirus program happy.

Do this:

See if that helps -- it should cause CHS to store its database in your MyDocuments directory which may satisfy your antivirus program, OR at least let you exclude that new database directory.

I wonder if BitDefender is the common theme..

Have you added the C:\Documents\DonationCoder\ClipboardHelpAndSpell\Database directory to the bitdefender exclusion list?

It may be a temporary file that the program is having trouble reading and not in the same directory-- maybe i can force it to save in same directory to fix the problem.

I, too, have all of a sudden started receiving tons of errors after running 2.3.1 fine for some time.

When I click on the tray icon, click on "U - All clips", click on "5- Virtual folders", click on "2- Clips with images" I get "Error DB25: DBISAM Engine error #11949 SQL Parsing error - Expected column name but instead found Modifactionate Time in SELECT SQL statement at line 1, column 220" and then "DBISAMQueryClipHelper: Cannot perform this operation on an open dataset" every time.

Other errors I get at various and sundry times are:

"Error DBISAM Engine Error #11013 Access denied to table or backup file '41320'" (sometimes 53720) and when I click OK I get "Error EX27: Operation aborted" then sometimes I get the 41320 again.

"DBISAM Engine Error #11051 Filter error for the table 'ClipTable' - Expected expression but instead found ) in filter expression in line 1, column 6"

"Error DB65: DBISAM Engine Error #11013 Access denied to table or backup file '76040'"
"Error DB65: DBISAM Engine Error #11013 Access denied to table or backup file '72800'"
"Error DB65: DBISAM Engine Error #11013 Access denied to table or backup file '72801'"
"Error DB65: DBISAM Engine Error #11013 Access denied to table or backup file '81360'"

"Error DB65: DBISAM Engine error #11989 SQL parsing error - Expected expression but instead found ) in SELECT statement at line 1, column 148"

Sometimes when I click on the tray icon and click on "W - Show main window" I get "Error DBISAM Engine error #11013 Access denied to table or backup file '8601'"

I have tried uninstalling, deleting the program folder, deleting the C:\Users\Steve\Documents\DonationCoder folder, changing the ConfigDir.ini setting of CONFIGDIR=%MYDOCUMENTS% (which didn't change anything BTW),  used registry editor to delete all references to "ClipboardHelp" or "Clipboard Help", then reinstalling; I have tried upgrading from 2.3.1 to 2.6.1; all I get now are errors. Clicking on "Verify or Repair Database.." does nothing. I can usually backup and restore the database (sometimes with nothing seeming to happen e.g. no error pops up nor any confirmation message). I must have some sort of permission problem somewhere but I don't know where?

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate with 4GB RAM on an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz CPU and I'm running Microsoft Security Essentials. I was running CH&S v2.3.1 until upgrading this morning to 2.6.1 (hoping that would fix some errors?).

I really liked using this product but i doesn't work for me anymore. I hope you can help?

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve,

Ok so let's try to start with a clean slate.  Don't worry about registry entries, but let's delete the files.

So delete the contents of c:\program Files X86\ClipboardHelpAndSpell
and C:\Users\Steve\Documents\DonationCoder\ClipboardHelpAndSpell

if you don't find that latter directory, let me know -- it should be something like that.

If you have old database of clips you need to preserve, back up those directories first.

Ok so after removing those, install the most recent stable version of Clipboard Help+Spell:
https://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/clipboardhelpandspell/downloads/ClipboardHelpAndSpellSetup.exe

(or the more recent alpha release: https://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/clipboardhelpandspell/downloads/alpha/ClipboardHelpAndSpellSetup.exe)

---

Then let's see if it could be related to microsoft security essentials, so either disable that temporarily, OR
add the following to the list of folders it should exclude from scanning:
C:\Program Files X86\ClipboardHelpAndSpell
and C:\Users\Steve\Documents\DonationCoder\ClipboardHelpAndSpell

And then start CHS, and let me know if you get any errors.

If not, then you can try turning Microsoft Security Essentials back on and see if the errors come back.

Let me know. (you can also email me at [email protected]).

Have you ever had one of those moments where all of a sudden it hits you like a Mack truck? Well ... as I was typing in my reply and watching my spelling be automatically corrected (because I was laughing at it having questions about words like ConfigDir, DBISAM and QueryClipHelper), it dawned on me that part of the name of this product is **SPELL**, but CH+S wasn't doing my real-time spell checking. On Thursday I had installed "Speckie", a real-time spell checker. Those two boys apparently don't get along. So I uninstalled CH+S, Speckie, and IESpell, made sure all their respective program folders were gone, deleted C:\Users\Steve\Documents\DonationCoder, remove any stray registry references to the three spell checkers I had just uninstalled, rebooted my PC, and finally resintalled CH+S v261.

But, I'm still getting errors. I am still getting the errors when I click on the tray icon, click on "U - All clips", click on "5- Virtual folders", click on "2- Clips with images" I get "Error DB65: DBISAM Engine error #11949 SQL Parsing error - Expected column name but instead found Modifactionate Time in SELECT SQL statement at line 1, column 220" then when I click <OK> sometimes I get: "DBISAMQueryClipHelper: Cannot perform this operation on an open dataset." I don't get an error if I am in the main window and in the tree click on "Clips with Images", though.

I can save and restore database, and sometimes even verify databases. When I click on "Verify or Repair Database" sometimes I get: "DBISAM Engine Error #11013 Access denied to table or backup file 'ClipTable'".

I got this once when doing (for this post) some <Ctrl>C or <Ctrl>X work: "Error DB65: DBISAM Engine error #11013 Access denied to table or backup file '4201'" then "Error EX63: Operation aborted".

Oh, and it didn't make any difference whether MSE real-time monitor was on or off.

What's next, boss?

Thanks,
Steve

does the error really say "Modifactionate"?

when you ran chs for the first time, are the clip folders all empty?  i'm trying to understand if it really did reset your files or if it left over old data we didn't delete somehow.

Hi. Unbelievably I've run into almost the same series of DBISAM errors as spknapp has reported. CHS 2.6.1 had been running fine for me until today. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit with AVAST anti-virus. No known changes to my configuration other than an regular anti-virus signature update. I've followed most of the recommendations you suggested to spknapp. Uninstalled with Revo Uninstaller to be sure everything was cleared out. Double checked to be sure all the relevant directories were deleted. Then reinstalled with 2.09.01. Encountered more DBISAM errors right away and then CHS went into an address exception loop requiring me to terminate it with Task Manager.

The database does not appear in the folder C:\Program File\Clipboard Help+Spell\Database. Where is it? Everything I did to assure it was deleted didn't work because it is still showing the clips I've taken and not deleted.

On Windows 7 the database will under the directory:

But i don't think that should have any bearing on any other errors.. frustrating..

All of these weird errors seem to be blossoming from one core problem -- it's having trouble saving temporary database files.

I appreciate your patience.. We'll figure this out if you are willing to stick with me and keep enduring all of this annoyance of testing..

Here's another thing i'd like you to look for:  If you go to C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\DonationCoder\Clipboard Help+Spell\Database\Temp
do you see numbered files in that directory? Like "123456.dat"?

The last time we encountered this kind of problem it seemed to be due to the program trying to create temporary files and security software on the pc blocking it from accessing the newly created files.. but creating them in that directory *should* have solved the problem.  Can you try adding that directory to your antivirus exclusion list?

Also, can you try this:
From Layouts menu choose "Standard", and then take a screenshot and post it -- i want to see if you have the proper groups tree.

Are you running as an administrator account? If not can you try that and see what happens?

And one more thing to try:

Download again newest alpha: https://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/clipboardhelpandspell/downloads/alpha/ClipboardHelpAndSpellSetup.exe
Install it on top of previous version is fine.
Run it and go to options and then the last "Statistics" tab, and screenshot that and post screenshot.  That will now tell us something.

(ps. There is a tiny chance the newest alpha will solve the problem -- fingers crossed!)

Tried the newest alpha version. Since there were no clips that I had to retain I deleted all the files in the database folder before reinstalling. Also added the database temp folder as an exclusion in my antivirus software per your suggestion. Installed and started up without incident. Went through a quick sequence of copy operations for how I am using CHS. So far so good - no DBISAM errors! Will be working with it some more over the next few hours and will let you know if I encounter any issues.

what on earth is going on..  :(
i really thought this had solved it.  i really wish i had never used the dbisam database engine in this program, it has been nothing but trouble.

can you figure out a sequence of operations that can reliably reproduce this error? after you make the error go away can you do other things?

can you take a screenshot of or post the first few lines in the Statistics tab of options.

also can you take a screenshot of your main CHS window?

On W764 I have CH+S open at its main window and then minimized and ALSO totally inaccessible. The only way out is to kill it off.

It looks as if part (but only part) of the problem might be tied into the 'can't make modal visible' issue, some sort of offshoot of which could be why I can't get CH+S to show up at all — other than on the task bar.

Post by: mouser on October 12, 2011, 09:31 PM
chris can you elaborate -- im not understanding your problem or if its related to database issue or if its new or what triggers it or..

i think maybe you have an issue with a modal window bug that can happen if the options are showing and you trigger hide and show of main window.

to confirm this: next time it happens use alt+Tab to reselect Clipboard help+spell, and see if it fixes showing the options dialog on top again.

(let's try to leave this thread for the evil soul crushing database errors)

Bingo! When I turn MSE real-time back on I start getting DBISAM access denied errors. I added C:\Users\Steve\Documents\DonationCoder to the MSE exclude list and CH+S seems to be behaving itself. Now why did it just start up several days ago when I had been running v2.3.1 since early August without telling MSE to exclude that folder?

Now why did it just start up several days ago when I had been running v2.3.1 since early August without telling MSE to exclude that folder?

Well this is actually an interesting clue..

I changed where the temporary database files were being stored after version 2.03.01, from the operating system temp directory to the Temp subdirectory of database.  I changed it specifically to avoid these antivirus locking files problems.  And it seemed to work.. But maybe for some antivirus tools it has opposite effect?!?!?

Let me make it an option, and let's see if that might cure it for you -- if so i'll have to figure out the best way forward in general.. stay tuned for new update..

ps.
Thank you again for having the patience to help me track down these bugs.. I can only imagine how frustrating it must be.  I've said it before but i'll say it again -- for every one person who takes the time to report a bug like this, there have to be 10 or 20 who experience it and just uninstall the software in disgust.  So i really really appreciate your time.

Right-clicking and bringing up the main window worked, but the window didn't look right, so I closed out CH+S. Then I downloaded and installed your "5:23AM" update and applied the tweak for the temp directory. It seems quiet for now. I even removed the exclude entry from MSE and it seems to be behaving (for now). It even let me use the "Snipping Tool" without barfing. I am going to shutdown and restart my PC to see if the startup error from CH+S goes away. I'll report back on it's behavior. FYI - here's a shot of the statistics:

I can see from the screeshot that it's not using system directory for temp files, can you double check and then make sure to restart program and repost new screenshot and let me know if error still happens?

Whoops again! Sorry but I'm rushing through this and just noticed that after I changed the temp directory to the system temp directory I didn't restart CHS. So ignore my last two posts. I'll go through my test sequence again and report back.

Okay. Worked much better once I restarted CHS and was pointed to the system temp directory. Was able to do a bunch of captures without problem. Then went into the grid and did a ctrl-A to select all and dragged to the recycle bin in the left pane. That caused this error. I had to kill CHS to get out of the loop.

Image001 did not attach can you retry?
Iit may be that your old bad clip is confusing it.. let's ignore the ctrl+A error, and maybe if you feel like it, exit chs and delete the files in C:\Users\Mark\Documents\DonationCoder\Clipboard Help+Spell\Database\ so that you start from scratch, and let me know if you get any further errors with the new settings.

The restart went just fine. I am not experiencing any errors (for now). I can backup, restore, and verify the database. I did what deepskytraveler tried (#43 - went into the grid and did a <Ctrl-A> to select all and dragged to the recycle bin in the left pane) and it worked fine - I even restored that database and all my clips were back. It is behaving very nicely right now. AND it seems to be playing well with "Snippet Tool". I even reinstalled the IE spell checker "Speckie" that I suspected yesterday might be causing trouble and everybody's behaving like good little children.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

For giggles here's a scrape of my statistics:

The good news is that it started off well.  Deleted the current database. Did a clean install of this morning's alpha version. Verified the integrity of the empty database. Ran it through my predominant usage with the program MegaStar. Captured clips from other programs. From the grid moved clips in and out of other folders including the recycle bin. All okay, no problems, no errors. Then I ran the verify/repair database function. Got this error:

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Then tried to exit from CHS by right-clicking and selecting exit. Got this error:

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

After which CHS was still running but not responsive to any mouse clicks. Had to kill it with task manager.

i really wish i had never used the dbisam database engine in this program, it has been nothing but trouble.

I don't know anything from the programmer's point of view, but I've never seen CHS lose or mangle any data it had captured.  Hence I'd rate the engine as sound from the users' point of view.

mouser, would it be a workaround to install CHS as portable rather than installed "normally?"  Would that put the temp directory somewhere less sensitive to AV programs?  And, is there an easy way to make the CHS SFX archive able to install as portable without having to remember to edit the INI file before first use?  I don't know about recent versions of WinRAR, but DOS RAR came with a "mini batch language" for making installations.  For the INI file, you'd just have to make it choose between a standard and portable?

I have actually thought about packing the zip-compatible installs in a way such that if you unpacked the files, it would start by default in portable mode -- i should do that.

As for the other thing -- unfortunately it doesn't look like running portably helps this weird locked database file problem..

I had the locked database stuff a couple of times. I'm going now to avoid it like the plague — a sure trigger for disaster.

Can you download the latest alpha and give that a whirl?

Mark and spknapp,

Can you download the latest alpha and give that a whirl?
and upon starting it up was promptly presented with

clicking OK dismissed it. I get the same error EVERY time I left-click on the tray icon. Bringing up the main window give me a bad looking one

so I closed down CH+S. Upon restarting the program I am presented with
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
and clicking OK dismissed it. Again, every time I left-click the tray icon I get

I'm going back to the version I loaded yesterday because it was working perfectly fine.

Maybe you can try the different temp file settings tweaks you tried before?

Im 99% certain these problems are related to a security software locking the temporary files, if you can only disable the scanning inside the folder you configure for the temporary access, that should solve it (of course that doesn't help others)

As you can see, it's set to the same setting as the version that doesn't throw errors:

unlikely but possible..

Uninstalled and deleted the old database. Installed the latest alpha,  2.09.02, and getting the same errors as spknapp.

On startup....

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

After a ctrl-c...

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

The errors dismiss and CHS continues to run. The grid doesn't look as I expect it to look and none of the grid presets are showing in the pulldown....

Switched back to database temp directory as you suggested. CHS started up without error. First clip okay. Grid looks as expected. Moved clip between folders. No problems. On second clip however got this error...

Dismissed this error and took another clip - successfully.  Go figure.

It's hard to know if those "CreationDateTime" must have a value errors are related to the previous 11013 error -- that's why i'm ignoring them until we get the main bug fixed.

Let me know if you see any other errors now that the temp directory is changed.

Worked through a series of new clips from MegaStar. Manipulated within the grid and tree structure. Printed clips and exported clips successfully. No errors. Closed CHS and restarted it. Captured more clips and did more manipulation. No errors. Will run through some more sequences over the weekend and will let you know if I run into any issues.

Nope. Still no good, no matter what I set the temp file tweak setting to.

Bringing CH+S up the first time after the new install it throws
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
and throws this every time I left-click the tray icon, too.

Shutdown and restart CH+S gives me this upon starting

and every time I left-click the tray icon.

Downloaded the latest alpha version per your 6:20PM post.  Just ran through a quick sequence of capturing clips. No problems. Dragged and dropped clips between folders in the tree. No problems at first. However after clicking around a half dozen or so times on different folders in the tree I began getting multiple access exceptions. Once they were all dismissed I was unable to switch to a different folder. Exited and restarted CHS. Was able to recreate the same problem. Exited and restarted CHS again. This time the grid window looked like this...

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Just had to try it one more time...restarted CHS the grid window looked as I expected it to...

And can you try changing the options on the "Tweaks" tab for where to store the temporary database file?

Ok so I got a follow up email from the other person experiencing this bug -- he tracked it down to the fact that CHS was saving its data to user's document directory, which was on a NETWORK drive.
Solution was to modify the ConfigDir.ini file in the ClipboardHelpAndSpell directory to point to a local drive (in his case CONFIGDIR=%APPDATA%).

Hi.

I just got this error too for the first time at boot, after 6 month use or so without a problem.
I use version 2.33 on XP SP2 and Avira antivirus.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I use the portable edition (did not install the program) which is stored in my D local hard disk which is excluded from Avira's Scan.

It is working right now, all I did was terminate by task manager and relaunch D:\....exe.
Title: Re: Error EX4: DBISAM Engine Error #11013
Post by: mouser on October 22, 2016, 06:43 AM
I wonder if i can check for and handle this condition more gracefully.. It may simply be a case of a temporary file being locked at start of app by a security app but that a second attempt to read it would solve the problem.

In your case terminating and relaunching solved the problem and you didn't have to make any changes in the app or in your antivirus tool, is that correct?
Title: Re: Error EX4: DBISAM Engine Error #11013
Post by: drgt on October 22, 2016, 06:47 AM
That is correct!

And like I said, this is the first time it happened and it was at boot time.

I finally found a solution that worked for me.

None of the suggestions listed here worked, but since I use WinPatrol, I set a startup delay for CHS to 2 minutes 10 seconds, and now the problem doesn't happen.
