no problem,

the only thing to deal with is being subscribed to Avanquest mail

Why does Expert PDF seem to have two companies associated with it, avanquest and visagesoft?
Title: Re: Expert PDF 8 Professional

Visagesoft is the manufacturer, while rumor has it that when the trading company Avanquest is entering the scene, it is because development has stopped. However, in some cases life has proven this to not be true. AudialsOne, is one example. Hopefully, Visagesoft Expert Pdf is another. But time will tell.

I kind of had the impression that Avanquest were a bit like Ashampoo, doing some of their own and some relabelled stuff, but I really dont know (I see they also sell MS Office etc on their site).

Curt just posted, he knows better :)

This is also my impression.  Same thing with Serif.  Kindof annoying, but oh well.

RE Expert PDF 8:  Is there anyone out there that uses Sophos and has been unable to register?
On my home computer (with Norton), everything is fine, but at work (with Sophos), I get an error "Cannot access ...  blah permissions."  I think it's a false positive with the SNUpdater.exe module.

is this region specific?

following the registration link takes me to a generic home page

No, not region specific. Yes there is a redirect to a page.
It can be closed.
Your code will be in your email, or the link Computology talks about.
Then the code.

nope, not seeing it - when I follow the link it redirects straight to the home page (tried it in 3 different browsers)

If there's another link somewhere to get to the requisite page then clearly I'm too stupid to see it :-[

Avanquest does keep developing some software they bought - unfortunately it appears that their development cycle is sporadic at best and as far as I can tell seems to involve only updating the version number and distributing it as a paid upgrade. (They may fix a few bugs but you don't see too much in the way of new features). PowerDesk is a case in point - I can't really see many changes since version 6 and here is the latest offering (which I declined, like the last one):

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Really - adding breadcrumbs and a couple of minor enhancements is a paid upgrade - again!

Note that the update from version 8 to 8.5 of Power Desk Pro is considered a paid upgrade. Major BS as, AFAICR, there were no free incremental updates between versions 8 and 8.5.

Stay away!

-wow, a post from Darwin!  :-* Indeed only his seventh in almost seven months!
On seasonal holiday leave, Mike?

Regarding Avanquest; I only deal with them if both the price really is a bargain, and it doesn't matter too much if the program ever is updated. Burned fingers...

Hi Curt and everyone else. I miss you all and DonationCoder and do try to keep up with goings on around here. Life has intruded and I don't have the time that I used to have to post here... I'll keep checking in and will try to post more as software is still a passion for me, even if I don't indulge it as much as I did in the past!

I'm still a File Manager addict, but now have only Dopus 10 Pro installed. I keep the XYPlorer and xplorer2 installers up to date in archive, but went on a serious austerity kick about three months ago WRT the amount of software that I have on my aging computer. Trying to squeeze another year out of it... So, I'm down to one of everything installed on my system.

Yes!  I moved from powerdesk to dopus in 2002 and never looked back!

Good to hear from you Darwin!  Keep the addiction alive.

I downloaded the trial today. It may not be bad if you need a free alternative to Adobe Acrobat, but the interface layout just felt a little strange to me coming off of Adobe X with their sliding "Vertical Menu Bar".

LOL - You click on buy now and they take you to the order page for 8.5!!!

Seriously why would you want to buy this?

Sorry, hadn't anticipated my post winding up at the top of a new page, out of context. I was just noting that Avanquest is now pushing PowerDesk 9 (and I suspected, as Carol confirms, that it is simply 8.5 rebadged). An update to the previous discussion about Avanquest's track record of buying products, not really developing them, and charging for upgrades that can barely be considered point release updates.

Update: PowerDesk Pro 9 is out!

-not really; they are merely letting you purchase it already now with a microscopic 10% off the normal price. The link on powerdesk9.com (http://powerdesk9.com) will still lead to a version 8.5

----- edit:
Okay, now I too have checked my emails. The upgrade offer is $14
