Title: Terraria
Post by: Deozaan on May 15, 2011, 11:16 PM
Dig, fight, explore, build! Nothing is impossible in this action-packed adventure game. The world is your canvas and the ground itself is your paint.

Terraria can possibly be described as a 2D mashup of Metroidw, Castlevaniaw, and Minecraftw, but has influences from many other games.

If the video is too boring for you, the action really picks up at around 3:32.

Terraria (http://terraria.org/) should be available on Steam (http://steampowered.com/) for $10 USD on Monday, May 16th (which is today).

Anyone want to go in together on a 4-pack? That would make it $7.50. I've already found two other people so we need one more for the 4-pack.

Mind telling us about why you like it?
haha, I saw this one coming.

Terraria has a TON of what I'm waiting Minecraft to be, but in 2D.   :-*  I love crafting, the sandbox environment, fending off creatures, and the massive randomly generated world.  It doesn't have interactive objects like circuit or mine carts, however I think the gear, special items, special bosses, rocket boots and guns (Most of which I've only read about so far) make up for it.

The program is fairly simple, with less than a 20 MB install (not including the required .Net 4 framework).  It starts up windowed with a fixed resolution.  Not sure what the resolution is, maybe 800x600.  You can full screen it, but the resolution stays the same.

You start off creating your character, which you can customize.  For me, it was weird customizing a character that's only a few pixels high, though I'd recommended it especially if you're going to play in multi-player servers.  Your character's equipment, inventory, and stats will follow the character between worlds.

Then you make a world you want to play in.  You name it and then decide if you want a small, medium, or large world.  It runs through some generation process for less than a minute, and you're in.

You start with just a copper pick and copper axe.  You move around with wads, and use your mouse to point at things.  You can interact with things close to you with your mouse, like mining and opening doors.  You can also point in the direction you want fire your arrows, like running away from zombies while shooting them.  You can clear away the dirt, chop down trees, plant acorns, eat mushrooms to regain lost health.  Game play is responsive and very intuitive.

You start off with 100 health, or 5 hearts.  You can increase your health pool by finding hearts in caves.  You also have a Marna pool, but it starts off at 0.  You can increase your Marna pool by collecting fallen stars that you can find during the night.  Your max Marna pool can be 200.

Like Minecraft, you craft weapons, tools, furniture, walls, and have requirements for all of them.  Unlike Minecraft, you don't need to know the crafting recipes, if you have enough materials while next to the tools you need (like a workbench, anvil, etc), the option to craft it will show up.  There are also many tiers of weapons (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Weapons) and armor (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Armor) you can craft as well.

There is a ton of other items (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Items) you can find & create as well, like a Enchanted Boomerang (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Enchanted_Boomerang), Shuriken (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Shuriken), Grappling Hook (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Grappling_Hook), Rocket Boots (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Rocket_Boots), and Flippers (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Flippers).  I haven't looked through them all, I want some of it to be a surprise. :)

There is a day and night cycle.  During the day you will see slimes (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Slime).  During the night there are Zombies and flying eyes.  On a rare occasion there will be a BloodMoon (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Blood_Moon) where the zombies will come in double the force, And know how to open your doors.

On rare occasions, a Goblin Army (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Goblin_Army) will attack.

There are a lot of monsters (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Goblin_Army) to encounter, and bosses to take down.  One of which is the Eye of Cthulhu (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Eye_of_Cthulhu).

There are a lot of Environments (http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Environments) to explore as well.  The ones I'm looking forward to finding are Dungeons and Floating Islands.

All this has got me pretty excited, and making it difficult for me to go to bed when I should. :D

I don't know if a demo is planned, but you can probably find some videos on YouTube that will give you an idea of how it plays.

Note: I haven't watched these (yet) but I liked his Minecraft series so I'm planning on watching these soon.

I just have to say that while I like Coe and his videos, he's not a very good player. He often misses some things that are pretty obvious (to me). For instance, he keeps building floors and platforms out of wood or dirt, but he should just use the in game item called "Wooden Platform."

But like I said, I like his videos and his commentary is generally pretty good.

Still not able to play, because .Net4.0 will not install itself in my (Win7 Ultimate x64) PC. Continuously getting the same error 'Access is denied' even when using the Administrator account, granting all available user rights, disabling UAC, lifting restrictions on folders, even partitions etc.

Used the .Net4.0 installer on a different PC's (Windows 7/XP) and on those it installs without problems. The puzzle to get to play Terraria already proves to be a challenge.

Are you using the .NET installer that comes with Terraria or the official one from Microsoft? Or have you tried both?
Title: Re: Terraria
Post by: Carol Haynes on June 17, 2011, 02:49 AM
Shades it sounds like something is using a .net4 file when you are trying to update and it is locked. Try making sure you exit all applications (including anything in the system tray) and disable any AV.

Also try downloading the installer form MS and doing it manually - sometimes the Windows Update version gets damaged and if it is a cached version it will never work!

If that doesn't work try running MSCONFIG and disable all Startup items and all non-MS services so that you get as near to a clean Windows startup environment as possible. Note some security software doesn't like you doing this so it may be best to leave any such software allowed to run and disable it before trying to install again.

Terraria comes with a webinstaller so I downloaded the installer from Microsoft and used that as my PC is not (or will be) connected to the internet anymore. That installer worked great on several PC's but not on mine. Because it is not connected to any network I didn't see the direct need for security software, so I uninstalled Avira and disabled the firewall. Actually, that PC is quite devoid of sofware/service as I use more and more portable apps these days.

All that didn't help, so I thought that there is some security setting in place that doesn't allow access to the folder .Net4 wants to install into.
The log file from the .Net4 installer shows one error:
Launching CreateProcess with command line = wusa.exe "D:\d4ab5f75b780171ea7f2662625\Windows6.1-KB958488-v6001-x64.msu" /quiet /norestart
Exe (D:\d4ab5f75b780171ea7f2662625\Windows6.1-KB958488-v6001-x64.msu) failed with 0x5 - Access is denied.

I am able to access and extract the .msu file mentioned above. to Granting read/write capability to everyone in the folder from the wusa.exe command didn't help. Copying the extracted data from the installer to another (also fully shared) folder and executing the command in the console returns the same 'Access is denied' result.

The above I tried with the Administrator account and the account that belongs to the Administrators group.

It appears to me that the command 'wusa.exe' is not sufficiently elevated to install .Net4.

Ah well, at least this is becoming an interesting puzzle to solve...

Hm, sounds like that Windows install is hosed in some way (that does happen, even with Win7), so a plausible solution would be to start with a clean slate.
Backup all data you want to keep, then format the C: partition. Then re-install Windows and the applications you really need to install. The portable apps you still have, so not much is lost or left to do there.

Re-installing becomes quickly the only option that is left, I am afraid.  :(

Tried to give the application wusa.exe unrestricted access using the security policy editor (secpol.msc), then tried SubInACL (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2006/09/04/739820.aspx) to fix the likely broken ACL's. As this got me nowhere I read more from the link above and saw in one of the comments that it is not working on 64-bit systems. But there is a suggestion to use CACL to try to elevate that app, but each time the result is the same: "access is denied".

Even the last ditch attempt to install: copying the wusa.exe executable and every other file showing up in DependencyWalker (http://www.dependencywalker.com/) into the extraction folder and re-execute the command-line mentioned in an earlier post, proved to be fruitless.

There is a procedure for completely removing Windows Update and WIndows Installer in Windows 7 and reinstalling then from clean. I used them last week and found the details on MS Technet - sorry I didn't keep the link.
