web mail client
« on: September 04, 2007, 01:28 AM »
hello

can you tell me please an e-mail client that supports web mail, such as yahoo, gmail and hotmail?

I have tested pocomail, dreammail, foxmail, eprompter but none has either good features or its stable and reliable

do you have something else in mind?

the best were eprompter and poppeeper (they only that got the number of emails in my inbox correct) but they lack a feature to search in the body of emails

thanks!

Well... Outlook 2003 handles all three brilliantly. I'm sure some of the other options will as well - Thunderbird (free), the Bat, Eudora (also free - just went OS), Pegasus, you could also look at Do-Organizer (won't do Hotmail though, AFAIK).

I use TheBat! successfully with Yahoo! UK Web mail.  I can't remember now, but you might have to go into your Yahoo! account and set it up to use POP3.  Works with Gmail too, again after setup (AFAIR).  I don't have a Hotmail account.

There isn't? I signed up for a new yahoo account just the other week, and I sure have free POP3 access. All I had to do was go into my settings and enable it.

No I'm not, as I am using POP3 to access my free Yahoo account right now :)

reading this thread prompted me to do some googling & came close with this blog entry.. according to commenter #8, "Most non US Yahoo! sites offer free POP3 so its best to stick to them for a while." so maybe POP access varies from domain name to another.. :)

MrPostman is an open-source Outlook add-in (Open source) that allows you to access US based Yahoo accounts from a mail client. However, it's utility comes and goes and while it works consistently for some people, never works for others. FWIW it worked for me for years and then stopped. Always works for my wife! YMMV...

Also, I remember there is an extension for Thunderbird to support web mail providers, including Yahoo! Mail. Darwin mentions another option, and Ian 'Gizmo' Richards has some other recommendations at his site (google "Tech Support Alert"), including one specifically tailored for Yahoo! Mail

I'm using Thunderbird to access my free gmail, hotmail, and Yahoo pop3 webmail accounts.

You need to install a couple of extensions, but it's only just slightly trickier than falling off a log.

any update on the subject please ?

pp although nice, it is really slow in development, it will allow us to search in email text and to see bulk emails in many years later

foxmail and dream-mail don't work well for me

Well... what updates are you hoping to get, Kalos? It's only been a little over a month and there are a limited number of options available to you and most of the most promising ones have been mentioned here. There is not a huge demand for development in this area and consequently development is slow.

If you want to be able to access your Yahoo.com (as opposed to co.uk, .de etc. accounts, which are indeed free - I have a yahoo.co.uk account) reliably from a pop3 client, pay your $19.95 a year to Yahoo. Otherwise there are a range of solutions, both shareware and FOSS, that have hit and miss reliabilty. Why? Because Yahoo constantly changes the way it communicates with your pop3 client and developers of third party solutions scramble to keep up to date.

Any idea when Yahoo will roll out IMAP?
There were news of IMAP links in yahoo mail etc.
