that's troubling..
how did you launch the updater.. from the start menu or from another program?
can you remind me what OS it is?
i don't suppose you installed or ran the programs from one directory and then moved them?

in chronological order:
1. i launched DCU 1.21.01 and was told that there is a new version for DCU (1.23.01) & Farr (2.00.142).
2. i updated from DCU but using the external downloader option so FDM did the downloading.
3. after completing the downloads, i exited Farr & DCU and extracted manually into respective folders (C:\Program Files\DC\<program name>).
4. that's it. then i started Farr then launched DCU.

btw, my OS is WinXP Pro SP2. i thought this was related to the problems that some had with Farr plugins..

ah ok that's easy then..
when you extract manually rather than using the installer for each program, DCU won't find the programs until you run them at least once.  Running the programs will "register them" wherever they are.

FARR plugins are in the FARR directory, so when FARR is found, they are found, so no you don't have to do anything other than run FARR once for it to find them.

no -- that won't make a difference.
I just need to figure out what is wrong. Email me and I can walk you through where to look to see what might be going wrong and why.

In general what we want to find is if the files in here:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\DonationCoder\DcUpdater\RedirectFiles\

Are properly specifying where your programs are installed.

I have kind of the same problem.

My problem is that DcUpdater shows some FARR2 plugins as not being installed when in fact they are (I can see them in FARR's plug-in manager).

Specifically, it shows FarrFox and FCalc as being "not installed" when in fact they are.

Also, DcUpdater is spelt wrongly in the taskbar (it says DcUppdater with two p:S).

Cheers,

Joe

i'm sure this has been mentioned before but i couldn't find the thread. so here it is again.. what to do when DCU shows programs already installed as "not installed"? :)

I too had this problem, and it mystified me for quite a while.  The installers found my already installed packages just fine, but DCU still maintained they were "not installed" even after several installs.

I discovered the problem lay in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\ApplicationData\DonationCoder\DcUpdater\RedirectFiles\
ProcessTamer.dcupdateredirect file.

It read "%ProgramFiles%\ProcessTamer\"
I amended it to read: "D:\Program Files\ProcessTamer\" and lo and behold, DCU now recognises it as an "installed package"

If you haven't already got it sorted, hope this helps.

i'll look into this a bit more, but what should happen is that the first time you run the program it should overwrite that redirect file to point to the real location.  but thanks for the tip katkilla, that may be a clue to some bug causing this.

thanks katkilla, will try your tip.. mouser, apparently this problem was introduced with version 1.23.01 because i am trying out on another PC and the previous version (1.20.03) did not show this behaviour.. :)

when i looked into the "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\DonationCoder\DcUpdater\RedirectFiles" folder, there was only "FindAndRunRobot.dcupdateredirect" file.. and when i launched DCU, it shows only Farr & DCU as installed..

can i manually create *.dcupdateredirect files and put them in the "RedirectFiles" folder?

no.  but only with the very latest versions has update support been added to these programs so you need the latest versions in order for them to be recognized.

No, having read this somewhere on the forum, I tried running the program several times, but to no avail.  I checked "Add/Remove Programs" in Control Panel, and the latest version of Process Tamer was shown there, so I then looked at the RedirectFiles and thought the entry looked rather odd with its "%" entries.  The fact that URL Snooper appeared differently gave me the clue as to what to alter.  Strange that DCU recognised URL Snooper and listed it correctly, but not Process Tamer.  yet they were both "updated" in the same session.  So it may be a bug.

Despite a few "teething problems" some people are having with DCU, it's a great little program, mouser - simply brilliant idea.  Much appreciated.

Thanks for saying that -- as you say this is a very new program and once we get it running well I hope it will be useful.

FYI & FWIW

I was having the same problems with installed programs not showing up.

When I looked, the redirects for CHS and SC were:
%ProgramFiles%\Clipboard Help+Spell\
%ProgramFiles%\ScreenshotCaptor\
Neither has ever resided there.

FARR's path, however, was correctly identified.

Installing the 'available for installation' but already installed CHS and SC didn't help.  They kept reappearing as available for installation.
Dragging the CHS and SC folders onto DCU didn't help, nor did dragging the relevant .dcupdate files to DCU.

Changing the paths in the .dcupdateredirect files in
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\DonationCoder\DcUpdater\RedirectFiles
sorted it out nicely.

What fun ;)

I, too, think DCU is an excellent idea.  The occasional quirk is only to be expected.
I thought that even I had made a mistake once upon a time... but then I discovered that was wrong.

I have DCUpdate installed on my desktop PC and all works fine there - installed several weeks ago.

Just installed it on my notebook PC and it does not work at all - same as the others here. I have tried everything mentioned but ---No go!

Any more ideas? Something changed since I installed it on my desktop PC.

Don't know if this will help you Mouser, but I am having the same problem.  Some observations, though:

  • It doesn't appear to affect plug-ins, just the application installers.
  • It didn't install anything unless all the supported programs were closed. (This may be coincidence though, since I didn't try the next thing until they were all closed).
  • It DID install Process Tamer when I installed it by itself through the DCU.
  • DCU STILL did not recognize Process Tamer after installation.
  • Shutting down and restarting DCU allowed it to recognize ALL installed programs. (After that worked for Process Tamer I did individual updates for the other programs installed as well)
  • Once in the "installed" list, they APPEAR to work right, though I can't be certain until another update is listed.

Hope this helps with the Troubleshooting.

Similar problem, and an additional one.

LBC isn't showing as installed, and there is nothing on the "available for installation" tab when launching DCU through Trout's menu (only shows Trout & DCU in installed list), but everything shows fine when launching it from shortcut in Start menu.

Shouldn't it always show if it is/isn't installed no matter how it's launched?
