free aol active virus shield no more but...

(1/2) > >>

nudone:
i've been really happy using the free AOL active virus shield but it appears that they've stopped providing it.

AOL are now providing this instead, the McAfee® Virus Scan Plus-Special edition http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp?, which i understand is also free.

has anyone had any experience of using this free software?

i see that is has a firewall built in - so it's a security 'suite'. mcafee can't be bad - surely?

sri:
once again AOL has proved that it's AOHell! ditching such an excellent product Kaspersky to crapware like McFluffy. Their decisions never cease to amaze me.

Lashiec:
Well, it's McAfee. The software is good, that can't be denied, but it suffers from "Nortonitis". Oh, cool, they require you to sign up with an AOL Mail account! Go for a free alternative if you can, or with payware quality like NOD or the same Kaspersky.

lanux128:
yeah.. the irony of it, i once recommended AOL VirusShield to a friend as a freeware alternative because he had become disenchanted with McAfee.. now i have to find him and explain that the goal-posts have been moved.. >:(

nudone:
lanux, the kaspersky aol anti-virus program is still okay to use. i'm still using it and it updates quite happily.

like you i was also recommending the kaspersky version to people, now it looks like i'll probably just recommend the new mcafee version instead - the people i'll be recommending it too will probably be better off with the 'security suite' anyway.

if the kaspersky version suddenly stopped updating properly then that wouldn't be too much fun but i doubt that they can do that.
