ZTreeWin File Manager August Sale - 50% Off
« on: August 10, 2007, 11:14 PM »
ZTreeWin is an ultrafast powerful text-mode file manager which is very actively developed. It is definitely the fastest file manager for both speed and efficiency IMO.

It's an updated version of XTree, which I used to swear by in DOS.   :)

It's absolutely beautiful... I really, really want to love it.  The question is, can I revert to text mode or am I trapped in this modern gui?

This is not a modern GUI at all--it's a console application, so all you can do is to change its window size, fonts and colors. On the other hand, if you're a keyboard maniac like me, you can't have any faster file manager with many additional functions, and you'll certainly won't miss drag & drop support. However, some operations could be performed with a mouse, if you insist. For me ZTree quickly became indispensable.

If you hit Alt+Enter while the program is running, it will switch to full screen text mode.

I liked XTree Pro a lot, back when I first started using a computer in the DOS days of 1988...  But do people really want to go back to a single-pane file manager, when you could have any number of twin-pane Norton Commander clones?

BTW, here's the XTree Fan Page, which contains history, timeline, tips & tricks, add-ons, and details of numerous clones/workalikes (including ZTree) on different platforms.

For me using a single pane browser is not "going back", I seldom need it--ZTree usage differs from all those mouse extensive browsers. But if you want it, just press F8 (or configure ZTree to use it all the time).

Twin-pane browsers probably started, and certainly became popular, with Norton Commander - for DOS ;)  Total Commander is an outstanding version for WinGUI, and is excellent for keyboard-centred people.  I really like the two panes because the idea of "source" and "target," visible at the same time, seems intuitive to me.

I still have a soft spot for XTree, though.

Here's the dual pane view from pressing F8 as yksyks pointed out:

Hmm... I wonder if this will hook into (or be hooked into by) TakeCommand/4NT or PromptPal? Of course, this begs the question of how essential this is, but it would be cool to be able work from within a console without having to rely on dir /w or dir /p to find things...

I'll just have to try it out!

Thanks for that tip - that's better. ZTWin takes me right back to dos and Norton. Memories... It DOES work with 4NT, etc. I'm going to trial it to see if I actually use it (given that I have DOpus and XYPlorer already). Hmm... wonder if it will run off a USB stick?

I'm not sure what exactly you mean, but certainly you can run ZTreeWin from the 4NT command line. I'm not using this very often, I prefer to run ZTW (or several instances of it) separately and in bigger window than 4NT allows, but for the case I need to navigate command prompt to any folder it's very convenient and fast to start ZTW, navigate there using the incremental search or history, press Alt-Q and I'm there.

Definitely try it out and enjoy!

Actually I don't like this, mainly because of the delay of monitor recovery from the mode change. Besides, on modern monitors you can set the ZTW window to show much more characters (both width and height) than you could in full-screen mode. And it will look much better, you can select font and its size.

Of course, it runs on USB quite well, this is the very first application I'm always carrying with me.

Heh, heh, yeah I'm not fussed about full-screen mode, either, as it turns out. It looks slightly distortred somehow and the text difficult to read. In normal mode (if I can say that) the text is crisp and clean and easily read.

EDIT: well, full screen mode isn't that bad if I launch ZTWin as a standalone process (ie not from within TCI and 4NT), but I still prefer it in a regular window for the reasons mentioned above.

I'm really loving this - it's partially nostalgia - it's so freakin' easy to get around/manipulate things via the keyboard.

If you mean what I think, why not check out the myriad of Norton Change Directory NCD clones?  The one I'm using now is WCD.  Or, Charles Dye's excellent file-finder Locate:

LOCATE.COM   v1.31   2003-12-09   C. Dye   [email protected]
Freeware.  Copyright 1995-2003, Charles Dye.  No warranty!

Syntax:  LOCATE [filespec] [switches]
/H   Hidden or system        /D-  find files, not Directories
/X   .COM, .EXE, .BAT        /D+  find Directories only
/Fn  only First n items      /D   find both (default)
/A   check Attributes        /T   path search
/0   0-byte files            /R   local hard drives only
/G   Go to directory         /K   Kill (delete) items
/N   bare Naked display      /W   Wide display
  /S   Summary info only       /P   Peter-style display
  /L   Win95 Long filenames    /NP  No Paging

/B:"command" Batch output    /D:[start][,end]  Date range
/O:"string"  macro Output    /T:[start][,end]  Time range
/C:"string"  run Commands    /S:[small][,big]  Size range

Space between the filespec and any switches.  Output will be paged
unless it is redirected or /NP used.  Specify default switches in a
LOCATE= variable.  Try /D? /T? /S? /A? /B? or /O? for more help.

using the /G switch.

Just an alternative approach...
