Social bookmarking sites
« on: February 28, 2006, 07:58 PM »
I'm really curious to build a list of social bookmarking/rating sites for websites.
basically these sites let you sign up and then rate sites as you browse (usually using a plugin), and see how others rate sites, and share discoveries.
seems like a really nice idea.

for example: stumbleupon - http://www.stumbleupon.com
another one: blinklist http://www.blinklist.com

anyone else have favorites?

I used to like and use LookSmart's Furl. I liked the "social" part, but in fact was most in search of something for just recording my bookmarks in an online place.

Lost interest when upgraded to Firefox 1.5, because their button doesn't worked with it, and recently started using the Google service instead (not social, at least for the moment, but that will probably change in the near future).

Bye!

StumbleUpon is different from the online bookmarking nich -- StumbleUpon is essentially a websurfing toolbar used to find new websites based on what you and others "like" you like. Recognize any aliases? ?:)
  • spurl.net is the online manager I've used the most historically.  It has been a bit slow the last while and has a few shortcomings that make using it for large bookmark collections a bit tedius.  The eventually-coming new version is supposed to be pretty awesome, though.
  • linkaGoGo is the service I've been using primarily lately.  While its interface is a bit cluttered and not necessarily pleasant to look at, linkaGoGo is unmatched in terms of features -- and it scales splendidly with larger bookmark collections.  Each bookmark can have an associated image, rss feed and "smart bookmark" -- the latter works like opera/firefox "keyword" searches.  Add linkaGoGo search to your searchbar and you can type in the alias of your bookmark to go to the bookmark or type the alias and some keywords and you can use that bookmark's associated search url -- powerful, handy stuff.
  • del.icio.us is probably the best known online bookmark manager.  It was the first that I know of to effectively use tags and its social aspects work but I haven't used it that much.  Spurl can add links to del.icio.us, so I have a del.icio.us account that is a mirror of my spurl account.
  • ma.gnolia.com is pretty, nice elegant aesthetic but is new and seems rather limited in features.  Its emphasis appears to be on social bookmarks/sharing.
  • shadows is a community driven bookmarking service.
  • wink is another community driven bookmarking service.

Those are the ones, off the top of my head, that I've opened accounts with.  Obviously only have input on a few of them -- generally, I don't see the difference among the social driven ones and don't spend enough time with any of them to detect their subtle differences.

What I have observed is that there are generally two classes of URL archival sites -- bookmark services and social bookmark services.  The bookmark services tend to have a strong features for personal bookmarking -- including bulk operations, folder-based organization (with tags as a secondary method usually), and link analysis.  These days, they also include a social aspect or some form of link recommendation based on user consensus, but these social aspects are afterthoughts.

The social bookmark services, on the other hand, have only basic bookmark feature sets -- your general url/name/comment information, and tag based organization.  They generally have a much more fleshed out and feature-rich social aspect, though -- since that's the driving force of their service.

As a rule, the personal bookmark services are you building your own search engine/bookmarks -- while the social bookmarking services are about a community building a search engine -- a micro-web of sorts.  One is more equipped to organize you; the other more equipped to help you find new things.

Though I haven't tried it, onlywire have a unified bookmarklet for  multiple social bookmarking accounts:

Don't support my favorite, though :(

Not a big fan of this:
[blockquote]You also agree to automatically have OnlyWire bookmark this site and our current Sponsor site http://www.centraldesktop.com with the bookmarking services you subscribe to.[/blockquote]

I do like the idea of it, however.  There's a highly configurable firefox extension that does this-- http://www.kenschutte.com/firefoxext/

Some time later now, I feel obligated to re-comment on ma.gnolia, which has become my primary bookmark repository.  It has very quickly (and enthusiastically) become very convenient/usable.  Bookmark and tag management is great and the social aspects are implemented really smartly. Plus, it looks great. :)

Does ma.gnolia have an API so third-party tools can be developed for it?

The reason so many nice third-party tools have been released for spurl and del.icio.us is because programming APIs exist for them.  In contrast, a service like blinklist (which has a smartly designed AJAX interface) is closed shop at the moment because there is no established API for it.

Another issue is whether the bookmarking info can be cached locally to improve search and response times.  Do any of these services feature this?

Yes, ma.gnolia does have an api -- your api token is easily accessible via your profile.  Furthermore, they're in the process of further expanding it to support del.icio.us' api, since so many applications use it -- which would make it possible to access ma.gnolia without rolling a new api kit.  Handy for already made applications that use the del.icio.us api, but using the ma.gnolia native api would give you access to more advanced, proprietary ma.gnolia features.

One feature I have yet to mention -- and the feature that caused me to give ma.gnolia a second look -- is the unique name it assigns to each and every bookmark.  Essentially, it's an automatically generated tinyurl ala tinyurl.com.

I use the Diigo toolbar because it lets me post to many social bookmarking sites:

(as you can see it now includes ma.gnolia too)

The point of having the same thing socially bookmarked all over the place? Well for once I get an extra backup copy of my bookmarks, and secondly certain pages or sites might get extra attention if I choose to make the bookmark public.

I am a big fan of del.icio.us. I bookmark links there and they get auto posted on my blog once every day.

Now that's something I haven't quite figured out yet. So del.icio.us would post my "bookmarks I made today" on my blog if I told it so?

Thinking that I wanted to social bookmark each and every post on my site, this would be somewhat incestous  ;) :P

Sri, where is your blog if I might ask?

There's another firefox extension that does that, but I can't recall its name.  I like the idea of using several services equally (Total remedy to service lock-in) but, alas, it isn't an option for an Opera user at this juncture.

So I can use applications written for del.icio.us on ma.gnolia?  That sounds cool.  I guess that means I'll be able to import ma.gnolia bookmarks to StumbleUpon.

So what features would I be missing that ma.gnolia's proprietary API has?

One feature ... is the unique name ma.gnolia assigns to each and every bookmark.  Essentially, it's an automatically generated tinyurl ala tinyurl.com.
I'm trying to decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing?

That seems to be the general idea.  Talking in the same language as others.

No two services are identical. Naturally anything ma.gnolia does that del.icio.us doesn't wouldn't be supported by a true del.icio.us api.  I don't know what goes on under the hood though, only what the drop in their blog.

I don't see any downside to it -- everybook mark you have is one more step to easy sharing, or even share just the keyword with other ma.gnolia users for quick/painless url passing. (You can embed links in ma.gnolia's internal discussion areas using just the keyword, quite cool).  One more convenience -- what could be bad about it?

Here are some of the reasons i've come to appreciate Diigo http://www.diigo.com/ more than others:

1. Firefox toolbar which lets me instantly know if comments have been posted and if the site i'm visiting is already in my collection.
2. On the other hand, i also use Foxcloud to back-up my bookmarkshttp://www.foxcloud.com/wiki/Main_Page, this way i continue to use Firefox bookmark search feature for quickest results (no matter which bookmarking service).
3. Diigo also has an excellent forum!

 :)

You mentioned tinyurl.com.  What I don't like about their URLs is I never know where their mystery URL is taking me.  I would rather see the real URL before clicking on it so I know where I'm being taken before getting there.  I would like to avoid pages I've already explored.

I use the Diigo toolbar

This is no longer true. I now use opera and have a little bookmarklet for bookmarking sites at del.icio.us, and operastumbler for rating and submitting sites to stumbleupon.

I'd love to post to ma.gnolia instead of to del.icio.us though, however I couldn't make their bookmarklets work in opera.
