thanks AK_

Have tried the new version with premiumbooster and it works OK.

So maybe it was just my computer unless you could  replicated the same bug you didn’t really say as such.

Use File Nanny all the time

Thanks

How about adding a custom icon choice in the options?

This has saved me hours of work! Thanx :Thmbsup:

I'm glad people find it useful :) I never use it myself, to be honest :)

nogojoe> i don't know why the problem is fixed but i'm glad it is ! :D

skooter> if you mean putting an icon in the context menu, i'm afraid it's not possible. I would have to create a real shell extension and i don't know how to do that (i'd really like to).

Thank You! To make a long story short I have been using Amiga Rexx running on UAE to do this. I have one other thing that I use UAE for and that's proper directory naming. ie: "this_dir-name" to "This Dir Name". If there is any chance you could whip something up in the same style as filenanny to do proper dir renaming, I would be even more eternally grateful.

I say even more because I already am eternally grateful for filenanny. Thanks to spacedad for the link.
Thanks again.

tomg> FileNanny already converts underscores and minus signs etc to spaces (just launch the FileNanny exe to see the options). By "proper directory naming", do you mean capitalizing every first letter ? I can add this option.

I know but I'm talking about existing directories so it would probably need to be another utility. I've often thought about asking BlueFive to add a few options to recase but I never got around to it.

http://bluefive.pair.com/recase.htm

Back OT: If it's no trouble, I would like an FileNanny option to stuff or not stuff the files though.  :)

Actually I was thinking of the following: I save a lot of web pages in the single page MHT format with Firefox. FileNanny works great to create a generic yellow folder for the MHT file. It would be great if when you create the folder put a desktop.ini file in it also with an icon of choice from the %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll default icon file. EXAMPLE of DESKTOP.INI :

[.ShellClassInfo]
IconFile=C:\WINDOWS\system32\SHELL32.dll
IconIndex=-321
ConfirmFileOp=0
InfoTip=MHT File

This gives the folder a different folder icon.

(Hope I clearly explained myself .)

hi ak_ is why is filenanny not listed in the downloads sections?
i wanted to let people know about it and this thread was a bit hard to find,and i noticed it wasn't on your site either.
it is free for all ,isn't it? you don't need to be a member of donationcoder?
not a problem if you do,cos i think it's a great site a lot of people i know would like to know about.
i did donate for filenanny and hope to get a few more for you.

Hi ak_ - many thanks for FileNanny!, it's great.
However I found that if I modified the folder name then it also renamed the file being moved - which I didn't want (I want to be able to change the folder name but the file to retain its original name).
Therefore I've tweaked it slightly to achieve this - attached contains tweaked source and executable (hope you don't mind). :)

Here's a quick template for how to write a C utility that you can invoke from a right-click, and below that are the contents of a .reg file that would point to the binary.  I've called it "bury" in this example, since it would bury a file one level deeper in the file tree...  It does show a command window for a few seconds, then it closes. (code extracted from a utility I wrote to gpg-encrypt a file on a right click.  That one unencrypts it on a double-click)

-------
#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
#include <string.h>
#include <errno.h>

int main(int argc, char **argv) {
  char command[4096];
  char *s = command;
  int rc = 0;

  if (argc != 2) {
    fprintf(stdout, "syntax: bury filename\n"); exit(1);
  }

  /* strip file extension, create subdir of that name, rename file to be inside subdir */
  /* take care when file has no extension or the rename fails or it is a link or a drive root */

  //rc = system(command);
  //if (rc != 0) exit(rc);

  exit(rc); return(rc);
}

----------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell]
@=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\bury]
@="Bury"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\bury\command]

I just found your great creation after wanting a similar tool for a long time. Awesome job creating this super useful tool. I wish I had your skills, but seeing as how I don't, maybe I could request another feature. I often download a folder full of may files that are related. Your FileNanny greatly simplifies sorting them into folders, however I am left with many files that have to be manually sorted into the corresponding folder afterwards.

example: newfile_v101.exe
             newfile_v101.txt
             newfile_v101.nfo
             newfile_v101.jpg

If all these related files could be right selected and then moved by FileNanny to the newly created folder, that would be the ultimate time saver. Many thanks for what is already a very useful utility, this functionality would only be an added bonus. Thanks, again.

does anyone else agree that ak_ needs a DC web space to showcase all his wonderful scripts? i wanted to introduce FileNanny to a colleague and had to do some navigation to find the latest version. :)

TheBigGuy> glad you like FileNanny :) If by "related files" you mean "files with the same name, extension excepted", then it should be a very simple feature to add.

kartal> At the time, it doesn't work with multiple files. What are you thinking about, putting each selected file in a unique folder or putting all selected files in the same folder ? The first behaviour seems the more appropriate to me and it's a shame it doesn't work already :) I'll look into this.

lanux> Hehe thanks :) I've been thinking about creating of small website for my scripts but i didn't know if it would be useful to anyone. If you say it would be, i guess i have to go and do it :)  I don't remember the way to create a dcmembers website, i think it's somewhere on the forum, i'll check it out.

I think it does work with multiple files when you use the send to option on the right click context menu. it puts the files into separate folders.
from memory I don't think it works with the "Filenanny this" option in the rightclick context menu, which by its name suggest single file.

Would it be possble to add option to archive the file onced filenannied to an archive folder of ones own choice.

Hi ak_

You are definitely have good karma for working so hard on these usefull tools for others. One day I hope to be able to do the same myself. Unfortunately I think that day is far in the future, but I can still dream.

Yes, the feature I was talking about adding was for sending all files with the same name (excepting different extensions) to the same folder. I thought this feature might be an easy one to add, and if you could, it would make this an even more useful tool. I already appreciate the time and effort you have put into this. Further improvements will make this an unbelievable time saver.

BTW, you definitely deserve your own page to showcase the great tools you have developed. Many, thanks.

Lanux> i'm using Subdude everyday too :) I'm thinking of a new version, with better season/episode recognition, but it's tough because there are so many different patterns (the "401,402,403" being the more problematic).

nogojoe> can you explain your request please ? I'm sorry, i didn't get it :)

TheBigGuy> good karma ? Cool !

Ok i'll add the multiple files thing to the todo list.

About that... Autohotkey is an easy language (with a weird syntax) and you can find very good documentation and help on the internet. I'm really not a programmer but i make little tools with autohotkey so there's no reason you couldn't :)

Thanks for adding my suggestion to your list of improvements. Thanks also, for the words of encouragement. I've only written very simple batch scripts before, usually using a similar example to copy from. Perhaps it's time to get involved with my 12 year old son and get him motivated to learn with me.

Thanks again.
