Software gone social? Wakoopa is quite clever
« on: May 03, 2007, 01:03 AM »
From Wakoopa:
________________________________________________
What is Wakoopa?
Wakoopa is a social network for software users. You download a little tracker on your PC or Mac, and every 15 minutes this updates your Wakoopa profile with a list of what software you’ve been using. This profile then enables you to add or invite friends and get updated about what they’re using, but also get updates about your software. Reviews that others have written or new versions of your software: it’s all on your dashboard. Even if you’re not a member of Wakoopa you’ll still be able to check out the coolest software. Since we apply the wisdom of crowds principle to software, you’ll be able to see exactly what’s popular and what’s the right tool for the job. Just browse the database by tags or categories, it’s all there! If you like software, then you’ll love Wakoopa.

Here's Jeremy Wagstaff's Ten-minute Review. Funny, I've been using DonationCoder.com for this same function for years! (And DC doesn't ask me to load any junk on my system.)

I rather liked that one! Installed & using it right now. :)

I'm not too fond of the social stuff, but this one seems pretty cool. It requires little effort on my part. :)

Who cares about tracking anyways? It's all done in aggregate anyways.

If anything, it helps you see where you spend your time. Sounds valuable to me.

Do you think a DC Team would be interesting?

Hey, this was interesting:

The rest will join... Resistance is futile... :)

Nah - I don't expect a lot of people to join. It would be fun though. We'd actually get a REAL look at what we're all using and how much we use it.

Got to give these guys credit - it's a very cool idea for a site.

Maybe they'll offer a Linux installation someday. I'd love to know what people are using on that platform in order to find the better apps.

Finding good software for 'niche' purposes or smaller operating systems is tough work. They all get drowned the the big blood red ocean of Windows software. Filtering through the noise isn't all that easy.

Hmmm, says I haven't used any software so far, yet I've opened and used eight programs. Gotta wait for the big refresh.

Well, and 'nix is drowning in smallware, which is pretty much their focus — just build something that does one thing and works. Must be 30 text editors alone, ha!

I see App!!

Hmmm, can't get XYplorer to show up. That's odd... It also displays TuneUp Utilities, which I've never loaded on this computer!

There are some apps it doesn't recognize on my computer, such as Windows Calculator (makes sense, it's not an independent app). Be nice if it recognized one's OS. Apparently it doesn't recognize 64-bit apps. All the ones I've opened over the last couple of hours don't register.

:(

I like this...this is cool:

SNAG-0346.png
What the DonationCoder team does.

BTW...if someone has tagged an application as malware, it will come up in your cloud as "get violated".  ;D

Do a search on au_.exe and click anybody listed as a user and you will see that in their cloud, linking to a malware list.

The less computer savvy can get some useful info about the things they run...especially when it comes to malware.

So this site can have multiple uses...good ones.

Something else this software can't do (yet) is recognize what Web 2.0 apps you're using, for example, Gmail, Zoho, or some of Veign's online apps. It would have to track your website history, then.

Correction — XYplorer shows up if you install it. I had only been copying over the new .exe file every time. Hmmm, good to know.

I joined the team.  Too bad there's not a way to hide certain apps from being reported.

It would be nice if you could hide and/or delete things from your history. It seems to be collecting a lot of garbage.

Self extracting .zip files show up as applications (with the file name), as well as some .tmp files during installs.

There is also some things showing in mine that I am totally clueless about...like an updater for an antivirus product I don't have on my system. It's showing AntiVir Updater running in the background...but I use AVG.

It also seems to treat 2 different versions of the same program as 2 separate programs, such as when I ran an older version of Copernic Agent and upgraded it to the new one. It is showing a duplicate entry for Copernic...one for each version I ran.

Oh...and for those of you that actually do RTFM, it will show that you read help files;D

I sent them a quick email the other day about a few quick questions:

A couple of thoughts, but first a big thanks!

1. Team software would be better to show stats for the team, not overall, or maybe both?
2. Last version is not correct on some of my software: EG ScreenShot Captor
3. Can you add graphic for Team?
4. Edit Team Name???
5. Can't see what version I'm using?

1. A kind of summary for the whole team would be cool indeed. The whole team section (icon, edit, etc.) is something we are going to improve on in the future.
2. This is correct: it shows latest version of your software popping up at the moment, not a version newer then yours. This will be fixed soon.
5. Good one! We'll have to add this information to your usage panel.

Keep checking our blog for further updates: http://blog.wakoopa.com

Regards,

Robert Gaal
Wakoopa

  • Team Pages are getting an overhaul shortly: I though it'd be neat to see what DonationCoder team's stats are (not for the whole of Wakoopa)
  • I'm guessing from this that Wakoopa only knows new versions when one of it's members stats gets updated with the new version.

Debian has the popularity-contest package. Ubuntu have their own results page as well.

Anyone besides App103 still using Wakoopa? I noticed it in her signature and just signed up.

If you've given it up, is there a particular reason why? If you've still got it, how have you liked it over the past year since this thread started?
