PowerPro development to cease this month
« on: April 15, 2007, 11:30:37 AM »
Message posted by Bruce Switzer in the main Yahoo! Group for PowerPro:

Folks:
My current plans are to stop all PowerPro development at the end of
April.  I have fixed a couple of small bugs in the last weeks, and will
look at any that are reported before April 30.  After that, I will no
longer respond to bug reports (or feature requests).

I am aware of a couple of outstanding bugs which I have decided not to
attempt to fix:

- *window menu move fails if dialog open:  too complicated to fix

- missing tooltip help for some dialog elements of configure dialog:  I
don't want to open the configure program just to do this.

Hopefully he hand down source code to someone? Most original and manipulating geek program Ive seen. Hopeless and cool. If Windows geeks exist it will be those who cant imagine desktop without PowerPro/Stiletto ;)

Bruce has been tweaking this program for years to the delight of users everywhere. It would be cool if it was handed over to someone else, but if not, it remains the most powerful tool in my belt. Saves me a countless number of hours in all areas of computer use.

Hopefully he hand down source code to someone?
Unfortunately, the answer is no. Quote from Bruce:

Sorry, but no.

Why?
1. Its got so many interal design problems now, that anyone attempting
to learn it and change it would need a lot of support from me which I
am not interested in providing. In fact, there are certain key
sections, like bar drawing and menu processing, that I fear touching
myself.

2. I don't think there is anything more of significant to be done.
If someone thinks of something, a plugin could be used.

3. There does not seem to be any more significant bugs.

i heard of PowerPro's powerful features (no pun intended) but had not tried it myself.. hopefully someone will be able to coax the author to provide the source-code for further development.. btw, recently authors of Cobian Backup & AllChars (that i know of) gave up their development of their respective programs and made it Open Source..

I hate it when a favorite program is shelved.  I actually bought Stiletto, the precursor to PowerPro.  I have relied upon this little program for a long time.  I certainly don't fault Bruce for giving up on it.  He spends way too much time for a nonprofit venture.

Unfortunately, even if it works now, I hate to continue to rely upon it because eventually it will have an issue with the OS or another program.  Sad day... :(

POWERPRO IS DEAD! LONG LIVE POWERPRO!! HUZZAAAAHHHH!!

(in other words, I am deeply saddened by this event, but as long as I am forced to use a windows platform in any capacity, I will use PowerPro. I will bravely soldier on under the PowerPro banner. I will never surrender.)

Thank you Ennovy for the notice. I'd have missed that for sure!

PowerPro, a mess to configure, but still the most useable multi purpose utility :).

Greetings

Aw, man if I were still on Windows...
If only it didn't run on enough system hooks to suspend a guru, I'd run it in Wine.
(it works, but many of the functions are either broken or limited)

Awesome news though, thanks!

Wow, they should rename this application "Energizer Bunny".  ;D

... or, Duracell Bunny, for those across the pond.  ;)
