Hi everyone.

I donated for the screen shot capture program but have found this little gem.

A feature that would really help my work is that an option under 'explicit rule' could be to force to CPU 0,1,2 or 3.

Maybe obvious but I would love to see vista support, as I can't get it to work on Vista Enterprise, I tried compatibility settings but no to avail.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... "Awesome program and website, Mouser. Thanks!"

I'd like to see Vista support as well.

Also, I'd like to see an option in the next build to hide the icon in the system tray - perhaps a hot-key combination could open it. That way it would be less likely to be messed with by users who have no business messing with it (I service a lot of laptops for a college and I must allow all users to have administrative privileges).

However, I also agree that a small footprint is important, so if I had to make a choice I'd give up the hide-the-icon option in order to keep PT small.

It works fine on Vista, provided that UAC is switched off.
With UAC switched on, there's no way to get it working (although pt is running), even running as administrator and with compatibility settings it either doesn't see any processes, or sees it but can't change any priorities (admin/xp2 compatibility respectively).

maybe all it needs is a manifest saying that pt must run with admin privileges.

Feature Request:

A little more options in "Explicit Rule" => Force above High (16)
- or maybe even a scale with many figures?

For some reason the new RealPlayer 11 Beta will not play all steady when forced to the normal "High" (13), but will do hiccups and apparently needs a little more power reserved, say 16 - "Real Time" (24) is just too much for this, I think.

- please?  :tellme:

Is that safe? I realize I don't know your specific situation, but in general it would seem better to reduce the priority of less-important apps. Any priority above 8-13 starts to run the risk of impacting critical system processes.

Yes, it is fairly safe. On my previous PC with Windows 2000 Pro I tried to run RealPlayer 10 at RealTime (24) without any problems that I can remember. But it is not preferably. How does one tell 60 (or 300) apps they are of less importance? Should I mark all of them "Force below normal"? No, surely that is not what you meant.

That's the beauty of Process Tamer -- it reduces those below normal that demand more than their fair share of CPU time, whether 5 or 5000.

Don't forget that you can adjust the amount of CPU usage that triggers the priority reduction, so it could actually work out to be the equivalent of "Force below normal" for all but the foreground app when set that way.

I'm glad a very high priority works for you, though -- hopefully RealPlayer 11 will be optimized before it goes "final".  8)

Maybe others have suggested that before, but one interesting feature IMHO would be to not only change the priority, but to limit the CPU usage for a process (example : from 100%  to something lower). There's already a nice Open Source utility called BES which does that, but... wouldn't it be great if PT could to it all?  :)

Quote
BES is a small tool which limits the CPU usage for a specified process: for instance, you can limit the CPU usage of a process which would use CPU 100%, down to 50% (or any percentage you like). With this, you can use other programs comfortably while doing something CPU-intensive in the background. By limiting the CPU load, you can also cool down your CPU immediately when it happens to get too hot. Of course the processing speed will slow down proportionally if you limit the CPU usage, but it should be much better than crashing because of heat or (in the worst scenario) having your computer broken with a burned CPU.

Furthermore, BES can hide any windows you don't want to be seen for some reason, without killing the process, and restore the hidden windows again anytime you like.

@ Cavalcader; the media player (sorry; THIS media player) needs the CPU all of the time, but is almost never foreground program but almost always "background" / hidden to tray. Windows Media Player 11 is quite genius at this point, but at the same excercise RealPlayer 11 is still truly beta - plus, I don't think RealPlayer 11 Beta is using a buffer (but I'm not sure). Frankly, I just want WMP to play all of my music files, so I can do without the (not so) Real concept.

I hear ya there! Definitely a hassle to have to use a half-dozen players for a variety of boutique formats.

BTW, Armando, thanks for the link to BES -- looks worth checking out!

I've been mainly using BES to limit Word's eccentricities in the past : i had problem with grammar checking in French -- I guess French is too much of a complex language for a small CPU.  :)

Please keep your comments germane to the topic, which is feature requests. I don't care about which media player or other utilities you are using. It's annoying to be notified of additions to this topic and come to read personal off topic chitchat.

Ouch! Spanked!

Now a feature request (to keep this post germane): I'd like to be able to create different profiles for PT so that, depending on what I am using my computer for, I can set the priorities for running processes accordingly. Just a thought...

Any news regarding taming disk access (as discussed at http://www.donationc...dex.php?topic=6803.0). That's the only feature I'm missing. Is it feasible at all? Thx.

Will there ever be a x64 version of ProcessTamer?
I know the 32 version works on x64, but a true x64 ProcessTamer app will be brilliant!!! Can you not simply recompile as x64?

i could easily make an x64 version if people think that would be beneficial.

however, do see this thread: http://www.donationc...ex.php?topic=10142.0 for a discussion of whether this really adds anything.

Ability to tame differently on startup, perhaps for the 1st 30 minutes or so.

Able to drastically tame some apps (even suspend) based on number of times exceeding a threshold CPU/memory/etc.

Different rules for battery power versus plugged in.

Able to manually invoke the "battery power" taming mode (for overnight updates, or when I want computer to stay cool.)   Actually, a better approach might be to allow forcing the CPU to downshift to a lower speed. Many laptops have this built in, based on power settings, etc.

able to collect and graph statistics on specific programs over time (days or weeks perhaps). Also, able to collect info on ALL programs for specified time interval (minutes, hours...)

Disturbing thrumming/humming/grinding noise that rises & lowers in pitch with CPU activity.
