If you use the FARR v2 plugin FarrFox, you might like this update.

Screenshot - 7_27_2007 , 2_59_48 AM.png

FarrFox now searches your bookmarks from: FireFox, Opera, and IE-based browsers, all at once.  No configuration should be required.  8)

NOTE: FARR now knows how to install the FarrFox plugin automatically if you run the updater, so there is no need to download and install it manuall unless you want to for some reason.
Manual Download: https://www.donation.../FarrFox/FarrFox.zip
Install Instructions: Just copy the files over existing files in the Plugins/FarrFox subdirectory of FARR.

Usage: Just type 'ff keywords'

Note: the first time you use it after a long period of disuse it will need to rescan all your favorites, which can take some seconds.

Version 1.03.01 - March 29, 2007
  • Advanced options lets you configure which browser bookmarks to search, and whether to include folder paths in titles
  • Different icons are now used for firefox, ie, opera.

I like it lots! Haven't really got used to it yet, but the same thing applied to "regular" FARR once too ;)

I had FARR crash upon first test with this latest version of the plugin, but unfortunately I forgot to take note of the crash report. If I can reproduce, I'll post.

I personal use a full blown bookmark manager. I have over 2000 bookmarks that I must keep browser independent since I use 3 browsers daily. So really I'm not a candidate for such plug-in.

I fail to see how that would affect the use of this plugin  :tellme: How are your bookmarks stored? Maybe this or a similar plugin could launch your bookmarks.

For such a huge bookmarks collection I can suggest to try out the Bookmark Base.

It can carry out 5k+ bookmarks and it's portable! I've placed it on my USB drive and now I can work with my bookmarks on any Windows-powered PC.

good update to include all browsers but the duplicate thingy keeps coming back.. i think firefox keeps backups in two places inside the profiles folder, one as a sub-folder called "bookmarkbackups" and another as a file: "bookmarks.bak"..

another suggestion, mouser.. give an option to display the bookmarks file-path in the Location column or the status-bar instead of both showing the url as it is now..

Hi Mouser,

Nice plugin, but unfortunately it's useless for me since I'm putting all my bookmarks on del.icio.us with the nice del.icio.us bookmarks Firefox extension. I wonder if someone could create a FARR plugin for del.icio.us?

Cheers,
  Robert

Anyone using this plugin? How do you like it?

If just started using it. I find it very useful. In fact, it is so useful I wish I would have tried it sooner. It would be nice to be able to limit its searches to the bookmarks in just browser(s) I use most often. That's one of those "nice but not necessary" things.

I am finding what I think is a bug, but I don't know if it's in the plugin or in FARR (I'm using 2.00.76). When I type ff and find and "run" a bookmark, everything works. The FARR window containing the bookmark search goes away, but it leaves a normal FARR window in its place, just like I had activated FARR again. I assume this is a bug as it is annoying to have to close this extra window, but I suppose it could be a feature.  ;)

Is there any way to get this plugin to open a link in the current tab? Or, does that need to be configured in FF?

sure sounds like a bug regarding the ff window popping up again.. does it happen when you launch normal applications through farr?  do you have the option set to "Close Window After Launch" ?

as far as opening urls in a current tab, that's going to be up to firefox im afraid, but if there is a commanline option to tell ff to do it, someone let me know.

Very cool plugin.  Is it possible to add bookmark keyword searching too?  For example using Firefox's keywords typing "LH" in the address bar opens www.lifehacker.com.  FarrFox doesn't seem to see the keywords though.  Even better would be the ability to give keywords priority.

I didn't make it apparent in my post, but as I'm sure you've found out already, the keywords are just a user-defined alias.  Firefox doesn't do any sort of smart matching or automatic generation.

It only seems to happen when using the ff plugin -- Firefox launches with the correct web page, as the the FARR window with the ff plugin closes and a new FARR window appears just las if I had reopened it. The "Close Windows After Launch" option is set. The FARR window closes normally after a normal search or an alias -- only the plugin seems to have a problem.

rssaphire are you using the latest farr alpha? if you're not sure can you redownload and update and see if it's still happening.

rssaphire are you using the latest farr alpha? if you're not sure can you redownload and update and see if it's still happening.

I redownloaded and am using v2.00.82 (which is what I was using before, I believe). The problem is still present. However, on rereading my description of the problem I may not have described it as clearly as I should have. Let me try again.

1) I bring up farr by pressing alt+space.
2) Farr appears with the usual list of recently used items
4) I type "ff donation"
3) after a brief pause, a list of bookmarks appears.
4) I click on the Donation Coder bookmark and Firefox starts to load it
5) The list of bookmarks clears in Farr then the url for Donation Coder appears briefly in the farr status bar.
6) The url disappears and farr expands to its original size with the original list of recently used items.
7) farr remains open until I manually close it.

If I am not uses the FF plugin, when I click on an item in the list, the item runs and the farr window disappears.

My original description implied that the farr window disappeared completely after the url started to load and a new farr window appeared. This was a misstatement on my part.

question: does it matter how you launch the url?
ie by double clicking it or by hitting alt+#
does this problem also occur if you launch a URL from normal search in farr not using bookmarks?

I seldom use the alt+# so I had not tried it, but using alt+# works fine. Only the mouse seems to have the problem.

does this problem also occur if you launch a URL from normal search in farr not using bookmarks?

Just typing a url and hitting return works fine.

ah ok this is a big clue..
i wonder if somehow farr isn't thinking that a drag and drop operation is occurring for some reason.. but then im not sure why i can't reproduce it..
i'll look more into mouse double clicking launch, there may be a clue there since i dont test that very often..
