I'm trying to figure out a good plan for updating the default aliases that come with FARR.
For example, if I figure out things to add to the search alias, or an improvement for the email alias.. I'm trying to figure out the way to do this without risking overwriting someone's custom aliases.
That's why I'm asking if anyone here modifies the aliases that come built into FARR.

One thing i might do is add an option in each alias like "READ ONLY" or "PROTECT" which would prevent you from modifying it and tell you that this alias may be overwritten on the next FARR update.

Thoughts?

I never change the default aliases.
I also think that it'd be overkill to add such an option. It'd only confuse people and add clutter.
On the other hand, you might make the default alias "protected", so that they can only be changed by the farr update.

Still, i think that the best option is to keep things as they are right now.

the additional aliases are the ones i pick up from the threads i mentioned earlier, e.g. Answers.com, Britannica & others..
A9 $$1 |http://a9.com/?q=$$1
Answers.com $$1 |http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery?s=$$1
Britannica $$1 |http://www.britannica.com/search?query=$$1&ct=
Encarta $$1 |http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/refpages/search.aspx?q=$$1
Google Images $$1 |http://images.google.com/images?q=$$1
Google Microsoft $$1 |http://www.google.com/microsoft?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=$$1
MobyGames $$1 |http://www.mobygames.com/search/quick?q=$$1
Omgili $$1 |http://omgili.com/omgili.search?q=$$1
Tucows $$1 |http://www.tucows.com/search?search=$$1
Yahoo Answers $$1 |http://answers.yahoo.com/search/search_result;_ylt=AgRBozjdbsrkgDkxb6e1zfcjzKIX?p=$$1

as for search folder aliases, you can add the 'Quick Launch' folder as some installers will place a shortcut there and myself throw a few shortcuts there.. :)
%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

btw, a suggestion, how about aliases & search folders in a separate ini file?

Idea:
Just check if the alias that you are going to overwrite is the same as the previous-default.
if it is , assume you can update it. If it's tinkered with, keep the tinkered version.
Additionaly you can add a default aliases button which would reset all aliases to the newest.

Wouldn't that cover most uses?
I never used aliases as opera did them better from the searchbox - I only used them for websites.

this may actually be the right way to go -- treat alias files like plugins, so you can easily enable and disable addon sets of aliases.

yes, i agree.. over time users may have accumulated or created their own set of aliases and this way, it will be easier to compare and share them..
another suggestion, can the hot-key to launch all items in search aliases be reverted back to Ctrl+Enter instead of current Ctrl+Alt+Enter..

I like to modify the cmd alias so that the first result gives me a command prompt, and the second gives a cygwin prompt :)
