Bugs 'n' suggestion
« on: August 26, 2005, 11:49 AM »
Just a few things I have noticed with version 1.2.6

(1) The confirm save on change option doesn't work properly.

Try this:

Select a region in an image and dim outside.

Now select another image.

The new image is loaded but the changed image is stored in the list without confirmation.

If you go back to the modified image you can't undo the changes either.

(2) ^Z for undoing changes doesn't seem to have the same effect as Edit >Undo

Undoing from the menu undoes the last process, but ^Z seems to undo a little of the last step. Try dimming an outside region again, and using both methods to undo.

Suggestion:

Grey out the Undo & Redo options in the Edit menu when there is nothing to undo or redo

Cheers

graying undo menu, good idea, i will do it.

i'm having a hard time reproducing #1 and 2.

the one special effect that applies multiple steps is the grey+dim+blur option, that should undo in multiple steps.  but both ctrl+z and menu undo shouls have same effect.

as for #1 can you check to make sure that you have in options it set to confirm on save? it should not save changes without asking with that setting.

Yes I have 'confirm on replace' set but I don't get a warning when I change thumbnails and any changes are saved.

The only time I get a warning about saving changes is if I click on the same thumbnail again.

Here is a sequence:

1) Click on thumbnail A
2) Select a region
3) Click on Grey inside
4) Click on thumbnail B (no warning given)
5) Click on thumbnail A (reloads with changes - can't undo now)

Re undo - maybe my eyes are playing games, but I find that 'grey on the outside' requires three ^Zs or three Edit>Undos to remove it, rather than a single click.

In preferences I have blur inside set to 3, outside to 1

i followed your steps and i always get the confirmation dialog.
let me make sure you have the right option set properly to get confirmations:
you should have "Confirm on file replace" selected in the General Settings Tab.

as for 3 ctrl^z's to undo -
this should be the case for one and only one special effect, the one that says "Enhance selection - gray, dim, and blur outside",
since this is actually 3 operations.

Yep - I do have that setting set.

It does take me 3 undos to revert dim outside ??

Strange.

I will try clearing out the whole thing and reinstalling clean and see if an upgrade has left something odd behind ...

OK - I uninstalled and deleted the whole app folder then reinstalled.

The 'save' function definitely only prompts to save if I click the same thumbnail. Other thumbnails load without warning and the altered image stays altered.

The undo bit ...

If I use the functions from the special effects menu they work fine.

If I use the dim outside button on the right then I have to undo 3 times. Is that button connected to the wrong routine ???

whit 1.02.07 (W2k SP4)
i had the same problem the first two times as Carol says:

- unpack ScreenshotCaptor.exe
- take an shot
- modify the pic (testet with blur outside / blur inside / highlight)
- choose SampleScreenshot.jpg from the thumpnails
--- and your first shot is saved without an question

I see that every 1,2,3 times i unpack ScreenshotCaptor.exe fresh new.
If i work more times i will be asked, but not the first time i use SC.

Carol, the "dim outside" button add three modifications at ones:
1: blur
2: grey
3: dim

This are three actions.

So we have to undo 3 steps.

ah.. that explains that..
so i connected the button to the 3part dim, blur, grey operation, but i labeled it only as dim outside.
ok my bad.

what is your guy's opinion about which operation that button should perform ? good the way it is, or should i link it to only one of those 3? which do people think is most likely to be used? i could also have pushing that button open a menu but that would require another click from user.

I think i use  BLUR OUTSIDE most.

But an pop-up menu (like them on "resize Image")
with the FOUR options
- Blur outside
- Grey outside
- Dim outside
- Blur, Grey. Dim outside

would be handy.

Or maybe,  if you need more space for the drawing tools,
an pop-up menu with SEVEN options related to the selection
- Blur outside
- Grey outside
- Dim outside
- Blur, Grey. Dim outside
- Blur inside
- Highlight
- Invert selection

could be imagin.

What do users think about this ?

#############

BTW:

the option to add an "border around the selection"
should be have an new name 'cus
you want to implement an "Text highlighting" option too. (wouldn't you?)

So  the current option "Highlighting" could named "Frame"
and than text highlighting could be named "Highlighting".

Or is this only for an german english speaker clear ? :(

Or is there an better idea ?

############

BTW 2:
during this "save without asking" error

i got the idea if you wouldn't save the last action
in the picture too ?

Or is this to many data for the pic file ?

i understand you completely and you are exactly right.
highlighting should be used for when you make like a whole window of text yellow highlight,
the current red border should be called something different.

's OK I'll forgive your doubt .... just this once ;)

I quite like the idea of a single effects button like Photoshop flyouts.

If you don't know how they work ... you have one button that can produce all the effects, and change its image to reflect the current choice. That is: if you simply click on the button it performs the visible icon function but if you click&hold on the button it displays a menu of all FX buttons from which you choose one and it then becomes the default/visible button.

Tooltips associated with each possible button would be useful so you don't have to remember the images.

PS. The little arrows in the bottom right corner of many of the icons mean that the icon (when held) is part of a flyout menu group.

yep, i am going to try to make a flyout button component if i can't find one - it's just what's needed.

carol, could you try this special version of screenshot captor:
https://www.donation...ScreenshotCaptor.exe

its just the exe you should copy into your existing folder.
the only thing this one does differently is shows some debugging into in the second to last little box on the bottom status bar.
what i want to know is what it says in that box as you switch to another image and it saves it automatically, it when it fails to ask you if it should save.

one thing to check is: when it autosaves without asking, does the filename maybe change a tiny bit?

ok i can see already the nature of the problem though i dont know the exact cause.

the FE:0 on the bottom as you are changing files is telling me that screenshot captor thinks that the old file does not exist so there is no reason to ask you if you want to overwrite it.  now to find out why it thinks that.
