Good VNC viewer / alternative?

(1/2) > >>

jgpaiva:
I'm looking for a way to connect to my new linux box from my windows laptop.
Currently i'm doing it through VNC and it works quite well but has a huge problem. I cannot send any character that is formed with altgr ( {[]}@€ for example). This is a giant issue, as i intend to use that box for programming.
I'm wondering if this is related to the client i'm using (urltra vnc).

This means i need a new client or a new protocol.

I've already tried RealVNC and it also has the same problem.
Any suggestions?

Have you tried TightVNC?

Ruffnekk:
At work we use DameWare mini remote. It's a very good alternative. You can download a trial at http://www.dameware.com

We also use RealVNC, but I never had the problem you describe though. I will try that tomorrow to see if I can use AltGr key combo's or not...

jgpaiva:
Yes, app, i've already tried tightvnc. (and a bunch of others ;))
Then, i made some research and found out that the problem is known and is related to ubuntu's default vnc server not supporting these chars.

The solution for the problem was installing another vnc server on linux, which, although looks like a simple task, took me all the afternoon to not get anything. As usual, linux let me down. :'(

In the meanwhile, i leave this question here and at the ubuntuforums for the linux-savy out there that might be able to point me in the right direction.

BTW: i followed  this guide and got the same problem mentioned in the replies.

Ruffnekk:
Okay I misunderstood the situation ;) You need an alternative that can work with VNC server... Sorry about the OT post :P
