Hm, I'm pretty sure this has been mentioned before? Weird if it hasn't, anyway :)

I remember seeing farbrausch's fr-08 live on a big-screen at The Party, 2000. That was pretty cool :)

Too bad The Party went bust... got infected by gamer-lamers anyway, and turned from a demoparty to a lame CS kiddie shoot-out.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure this was mentioned before, but it's still a good thing to remember the talent of some people. The demo scene was always impressive since the days of the Amiga, and games like this only strength this fact.

I couldn't find it either, must be because it's been mentioned at other forums I frequent :)

Yeah, I tried it a couple of times. It's pretty heavy GPU-wise, iirc it wasn't 100% smooth on a radeon9600, a bit better at a GeForce6600, and runs pretty well on my current GF7600GT.

The AI and physics and such is pretty simple, but the procedurally generated textures are very pretty, the shaders (lighting, bumpmapping) make it look even better, and the geometry (probably also procedural :)) looks nice as well.

This approach won't really work for large-scale "real life" games IMHO, but it is pretty nifty nonetheless.

good to hear that it works well with GF7600GT, at least it doesn't crash horribly with other cards. since it's very small, i just might throw it into my usb stick for diagnostic purpose.. :)

Considering what type of programming they're using, the amazing thing is that they didn't go mad during the process. And that the process resulted in something so incredible.

It runs on a GeForce7600 GT, huh? So it should run also on a Radeon X1600 Pro ;D

Well, the executable is compressed iirc - that does shrink it down somewhat. But do check out http://www.theprodukkt.com for some info on how they achieve this whole thing.

also, check out the technical FAQ in the readme.txt for some pointers on how they did it.. btw, managed to get a pc with 3d card and the game is just neat!

maybe that's how they managed to make it so tiny, since sound/dialog takes up most of the space in a game.. :)

Sound is procedurally generated too :)

Works pretty well in fr-08 imho, but you have to like that kind of music, of course.

just wanna bring up a good topic..

This is interesting, or maybe an old news for others.. a 104 Kilobytes game, smaller than my Resume` in MS Word document! a bit old now I think.. download it here and enjoy the high quality graphics 3D game:

The 104KB 3D Game:
http://www.theprodukkt.com/kkrieger

and

The 177KB 3D Simulation:
http://www.theprodukkt.com/debris

Looks like a good hard work Assembly Language game thats worth the experiencing

psionics: umm, you're linking to kkrieger, which is exactly what this thread was about? And where do you get the 104KB figure from, kkrieger is 94KB?

Not really, farb-rausch do most of their stuff in C++... the small size is achieved by generating textures and geometry procedurally, and of course the usual trick of EXE compression.

"just wanna bring up a good topic.."
+ with the direct link.
is there something I should know? I feel like I am restricted to post good comments.. I have nothing to prove dude.
96kb is right. the uncompressed version + the text file concluded the 104kb when you check it's folder's size.

I just wondered why you posted to the same game that the topic was originally about :), and then claimed it was 104kb (the exe is 96kb, but yeah, it uses exe compression). But I'm repeating myself :)

Very impressive. I'm hoping to see more of this procedural stuff in commercial games so we don't keep having to get bigger harddrives ;)

Thing is, you can't do everything procedurally. You can do cool stuff that way, but not everything, and with the amount of textures in a modern game... you would need long load times, or large disk caches. Iirc, the farb-rausch demos used to take ~30-60 seconds of pre-computation before loading on contemporary hardware.

yeah, the requirements are getting insane by the game, not only for hard-drive space but memory too.. has anyone seen the minimum requirement for the PC version of Assassin's Creed? it's listed as requiring 3GB of RAM! :o

lanux: games are developed with console specs in mind, nowadays... and those specs aren't always adjusted to PC hardware before published.

A modern games has pretty insane texture and model requirements, which (on PCs) require a lot of GPU memory, but on consoles are generally shared memory.

I had installed the warez version of it(asassin's creed that crashes in jerusalem) with a 2gb RAM and HD2600 XT 512mb DDR3 and it has no lag. DX9 and DX10 version has no graphical difference accept that it has a faster loading time in DX10

Its a good game. but whenever someone in the world make a bootable PC OS Game Console, that would probably insane  :)

"Bootable game OS" for PCs wouldn't make sense, really... console's strength lies in uniform hardware and very capable CPU/GPUs.
