Anyone know of a good File splitter app?
« on: August 10, 2005, 07:26 PM »
Most file splitting apps have awkward interfaces. With files now growing beyond 4G in size, it's time to find (or build) a great splitter. I need help. Not counting zip-splitting by ZIP apps like WinZip and PowerArchiver, what do you recommend?

Okay, now I'm curious. I can split an archive using WinRAR, but how would I merge a .001... file? That's what I mean.

my answer was really about splitting your own files; i find winrar is just perfect for that, with the bonus of supporting all the options youd want about self assembly, compression, etc.

but if you need a tool for rejoining files someone else has split then you need another tool.

i may not really have understood the problem here but if you are using winrar to split things up (using no compression if you just want to save time and cut the file into chunks), then why not make it a self extracting archive then anyone can rejoin the split files without the need for winrar?

sorry if i didn't quite get the point.

i think we are now talking about files that have been split by someone else into just plain parts, *not* using winrar.

Wouldn't "sticking parts together" be a pretty straight forward 'coding snack' project ?

yes it would, but there are literally dozens of these apps already in existence, and they are all free.

here's an attractive looking one: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/gsplit.html

Thanks GSplit looks pretty useful.

I use imaging software for system backup. I can produce lots of CD/DVD size lumps but often don't bother as I store images on a separate hard disk. GSplit is good for breaking up large images into CD/DVD size chunks for writing.

Now .... it is a shame it doesn't write direct to CDRW or DVDRW though .... (not so subtle hint ;))

For putting stuff back together I use simple file joiner http://www.peretek.com/sfj.php which is free and works pretty well for my requirements.

Thanks jpfx, for recommending Peretek's Simple File Joiner. It's the perfect minimalist approach to this kind of app. (Just wish they'd combine the Joiner and Splitter apps into one, but figure most people only use the joiner?)

Accordingly with what app you split your data
you could merge them with DOS "copy \b part1 + part2 + part3 Result.exe"
or with "copy \b *.ext result.exe"
See COPY /? for help  :)

If you want some DOS or WIN apps i could post you some names.
