IDEA: Restart IE
« on: November 23, 2006, 08:14 AM »
I've not been able to find any extension / program with the feature "Restart Internet Explorer". I'd expect there is such a program, but I don't know of it. But having had Firefox(with extension "Restart Firefox 0.3") for some months now, I have become very addicted to this feature  :-* , and wonder how I ever managed to live without it...

Of course, this should be a job for Microsoft, but would you please consider to make Internet Explorer be able to restart at the present page - or please tell me the name of a program that will???

I am most surprised that no one have had anything to say on this matter!
Does this mean that IE 7 has Restart - and that you all have IE 7 (if IE at all)??

I use IE 6 (and Firefox), and will not change to IE 7 for some time, and I find the feature Restart most useful. Don't you?

Or is it, that it was not just a snack, I was asking for
- that it is too big a lunch for "Coding Snacks"??
If so, please forgive me, for not knowing what I was asking for!

Actually, I have been thinking about this one, but I need to do a bit more research first. There are some things I need to figure out how to do.

If I can do this, it would only work with IE6 and not IE7. I would essentially be making a project that would be intended to die with IE6.

I am not saying I won't do it. I will do it, if I can.

Just be patient. I am not very fast.

I am not blind to Maxthon - not at all - but I was so disappointed by the Danish version not being updated (Maxthorn version 1.2 versus the English versions 1.5.8.120 or 2 Beta), that I didn't bother. Both my IE and my Firefox are in Danish, and all updated.

This would work for you, but it is free today only:

http://www.giveawayo...heday.com/ierescuer/

IERescuer is a useful utility that extends the capabilities of your Internet Explorer browser. It enables you to continue working on the page or pages that were closed last time, even if your Internet Explorer or Windows crashed.

Start with the pages you had open when the browser was last closed. Reopen closed windows.
Don’t trouble yourself about filling in the forms on the page again and again.
Having filled in any fields of the form on the page once, you won’t have to bother yourself with it. You’ll be able to restore it automatically the next time you launch your Internet Explorer.

IERescuer shows last visited pages dialog when Internet Explorer starts up, even after a crash if users wish.
Users can select any last visited pages to open, or close the dialog to open a blank tab.

Because this is only a one day offer and won't be free after today, I am still going to try to do this coding snack.

I should mention that I have moved to IE 7 inspite what I said at the time I started this thread. IE 7 is missing the same feature though. I have indstalled IERescuer only today - I don't know why I didn't get a message back then about April's last post - but I do find the price to be so high that it seems a little silly: $20. To add even more silliness the company claims the normal price to be $40 !! - [after-edit:] and it cannot handle IE 7's tabbed browsing! This is no good.

I don't think I can do this for IE 7.  :(

I am sorry you didn't get the notification for the post about that program being free for a day, when I made it.

Maybe this is a coding snack someone else could do, though...just not me.

Curt, is it so bad not having a localized version of your internet browser? IMHO if you want the IE engine, you should be using Maxthon or Avant, at least they block some of the bad things, have tabbed browsing without requiring IE7, etc.

Curt, is it so bad not having a localized version of your internet browser?

maybe some nine out of ten programs on my PC are in English only, but one of the reasons I stick to Microsoft is that they will deliver most of their program in localized language versions - and I like that. Having said that, I must admit that when I have come to understand how to use an app, any app, I tend to find it of no matter what language it is using, because I will not be reading the menu text anymore - but will be looking for the icon instead.

And for this reason I might give Maxthon or Avant a chance... Thanks for the tips!

- and having said that, I took a second look at the icons in IE and realized I would be missing certain add-ons if I changed to a different browser: IESpell, IE7Pro, Outpost QuickTune, Skype and SpywareDoctorPro for a start...

I use AOL Explorer and IEspell together. (you can access anything that is on IE's right click menu in just about any IE based browser)

It has tabbed browsing that is much more stable than IE7 and you don't have to install IE 7 to use it. (you can if you want, but it's not necessary)

It will also allow you to save all open tabs as a folder, and load the entire folder of bookmarks by just right clicking the folder and selecting the option to do that.

I am pretty sure that Maxthon has the same options, too.

I use AOL Explorer

Question for April / any-one:
Can one disable the Ctrl+RightClick preview feature in AOL Explorer?

I could never figure out how to get the previews back. They used to be automatic when you hovered over a link, but they took that away in later versions. Thanks for telling me how to get them to work again.  :-*

No, I don't know how to disable that.  :-[
