Trying to get into the newsgroup thing,anyone have any favorite newsgroups?

I'm trying to get into the newsgroup thing,yeah i know i'm about 15 years late,i have a couple of free servers,
one from my isp,but alot of the info is old and stale,is it a case of you get what you pay for or is just a question of digging around ? Or maybe i've been spoiled by internet forums,none the less i know there has to be some gold out there so...

Anyone know of some active newsgroups,servers
with active topics such as tech news,breaking world news.
I'm basically a news nut,i want news from all over the globe,
binaries aren't important.

You could start off with Google http://groups-beta.google.com/ Much more than usenet.
