Are 'treemaps' what you're looking for?

Do a Google search on that term, or look at these (free) examples:

http://www.jgoodies.com/freeware/jdiskreport/  (which is not really a Treemap, but a similar idea that shows only one directory level at a time instead of the whole set of files).

Its like crazy looking but you might love it.  It's kinda like Space Monger - ish GUI but more colorful =P check it out. Its freeware too!
