Is there any tool to see pdfs full screen in two pages?
« on: October 19, 2006, 07:53 AM »
Is there any tool to see pdfs full screen in two pages. Acrobat 7 has full screen mode but it's limited to one page.

Maybe someone should mail to adobe saying that some people use acrobat to read documents off the screen? probably too late if they didn't release it in ther new version 8. Anyone knows if this last version has any improvements in this respect? Also, how about dual monitors?

I don't know of any app. The best I can offer is that in Acrobat you can view two pages at once (just not full screen). You can however turn of all the toolbars etc. so that you can get close to full screen. (There is a button at the lower left corner to hide toolbars)

Yes, Foxit PDF Reader views 2 pages side by side in full screen.

This is because Foxit kicks ass. :D Aside from the javascript functionality that is lacking and making some fill-in PDF's not work...

yes, for on-screen viewing, Foxit Reader is much better since Adobe is increasingly focussed on pushing Yahoo/Google/<insert your search engine here> toolbars to users. also not to mention the bloat that each version adds..

The best part about foxit is how little it is -- it doesn't take an entire lunchbreak to open a simple pdf file, unlike some *coughs*adobe*coughs* applications.

I use foxit myself, but it's slow for complex PDFs :(

What you talking 'bout Willis!?! Although it's not full screen Acrobat Reader allows for viewing two pages at a time. If you maximize the windows and tidy up the toolbars it is close to fullscreen. View | Page Layout | Facing.

the problem with foxit is that the fonts are not as clear as adobe's (in most papers; in a selected few it's clearer). Readability is what I'm trying to maximize here, so it's a no-go for foxit. I think adobe gives more options: I have selected options> page display > use cooltype and it makes a big difference.

thanks for the suggestion though.

If you find a good solution and become attached to it, the solution may become your next problem.

Actually rendering in Foxit varies system-to-system. I've seen this in person on a few machines at work and had no idea how to solve it until recently. I do believe there's an addon to the new Foxit 2.0 that solves it however. I forget the name of it, but if you go to Updates (nice new feature of 2.0) it will show up in the list with a description that should seem relevant to the problem. Download and install and your text rendering quality should improve.

2.0 also includes basic form fill functionality, although it chokes on more complex and rule-based forms (more extensive embedded javascript; they're working on it). It also sadly doesn't work properly with OpenOffice exported fill-in PDF's, which is a cool function of OO, so I hope they can fix that soon.

thanks Oshyan, I tried what you say and it does make it more readable. Now, if only I could implement scrolling like in acrobat ( forget the key combo, I have mapped it to F1 with ahk)...

Also: the underlying tool (foxit pro) doesn't seem to work in some docs.

Can foxit do OCR like adobe acrobat?

JavaJones: sounds interesting, I'll have to download a more recent version and see for myself.

I didn't even know Acrobat did OCR. I don't have any experience with the Foxit tools besides the reader as they're mostly not free and all I really need is the reader usually. So I don't know if there's OCR capability there. I kind of doubt it though.

What is the scrolling that you like in Acrobat?

Hmm, I think you need the full version of Acrobat for OCR'ing, not just the reader?

Yes, I would assume so. Which is why I was saying I haven't tried the non-reader Foxit products.
