IDEA: Special Folders in the Desktop NameSpace
« on: October 08, 2006, 02:10 PM »
I like the idea of having multiple virtual roots in Video, Pictures, Music, Downloads, right there in the root of the Desktop, far above My Computer\Drive:\Path\Path\Path\ - always near, always visible.

http://eng.softq.org/Folder2mypc does that but only for My Computer. You need to regedit to get it to Desktop NameSpace. So we need a tool that browses the My Computer NameSpace and copies it to Desktop NameSpace. Delete option should be included too.

A good solution for this is using softlinks for folders. You can have the folders wherever you want, then softlink them to the desktop, and use them as if they were there.
For more info, see this thread.

No good. Special folders or whatever these NameSpace Thingies are called behave differently. Crucially differently. They're invisible. I don't want all those softlinked/junctioned/virtual folders and their files existing on my desktop, which is how the OS regards them as. Try backing up your desktop folder with a bunch of softlinks. You end up with all the contents of those links. I just want paths to the folders, new virtual roots, not the contents. Special folders do just that.

Have you looked at Shell Object Editor?  I think it'll do what you want.
