"Mr. Carroll spoke on Thursday with Anousheh Ansari, an Iranian-American space tourist aboard the International Space Station (ISS)."

"I heard her say, 'C-Q, C-Q, C-Q,' and of course that means she wants to talk to someone, anyone who is listening," Mr. Carroll said. "And I thought: What the heck, you can't lose by trying."

---I need to get a ham radio.

You can acutally talk to the folk up on the ISS regulary. I used to listen in allot. :)
Most of them astronauts are ham radio operators.
And there's a whole world of cool APRS and ISS tracking software out there! (example)

I know a amateur radio operator close to me who talked with the space station several years ago.
