After a great deal of development work we have sadly concluded that it is not practical to adapt FileBox eXtender to work under Window Vista – the architecture is simply too different. By way of apology to customers who were hoping for an upgrade path we are offering anyone who purchased a license for Filebox eXtender after Dec. 31, 2005 a choice of a license swap for another of our products (either for yourself or as a gift for a friend), or a refund of your purchase price. To claim, simply email us a copy of your license key, together with your full name, company name (if any), email and postal address at the time of your purchase.

It is now a freeware - free to use by everyone.

its interesting to hear that vista is going to cause trouble for these types of apps.
and it's also quite cool to hear that hyperionics is doing that for owners all the way back to dec 2005.
sounds like pretty cool company.

This is sad news . . . I'd grown quite fond of the app.  My other favorite, File-Ex, hasn't been updated in a long time either. Wonder if they're calling it quits for vista as well.  I hate when software I love dies.

Well, Direct Folders is still alive and being discussed here currently. You might consider evaluating this program, particularly since they have just released a major new revision that improves significantly on the previous one. Read this thread for additional information on Direct Folders.

Thus far, I really don't care for DF - I'm unable to find any keyboard friendliness at all -- the one simplistic, mouse-required menu isn't really exciting me smiley

I just e-mailed Cottonwood Software, alerting them to the existence of this thread, and asking them if they would clarify the File-Ex situation.  Might be worth someone asking the other vendors in the DC Dialog Box Extender review as well.

i guess it's time to update the main review.

btw, when i roll-up a window, the program reverts to non-themed look. can this be reversed?

I received a reply from Stan Spielbusch of Cottonwood Software, <stans@cottonwoodsoftware.com

Thank you for letting me know.  Rather than joining the discussion
myself, you're welcome to quote any or all of this for me:

As of yet I have not had a chance to look at Vista to see how easy it
would be to support it.  It may not be practical to port File-Ex to
Vista either -- the comments about FileBox eXtender aren't very
encouraging.  I do plan to investigate the situation in a couple
months, hoping that I can find a way to do it (perhaps File-Ex's
architecture is different enough from FileBox eXtender that it's not a
problem for File-Ex), but at this time I cannot promise that a Vista
version will be forthcoming.

By the way, if anyone has tried to run File-Ex under Vista, I would be
interested to know the results.  As yet I don't have hardware capable
of running Vista myself.

Posting delayed as I was away last week.

Lanux128, maybe AutoDialogs should be added to the review?
And the good bit; it's currently on DC members' special offer on MetaProducts Software  smiley

Quote
AutoDialogs is a Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista program that was developed to provide quick access to the folders you use most often in standard Open / Save as / Browse for folder dialogs (including all Microsoft Office versions and Windows 2000/XP/2003 dialog boxes,) Windows Explorer and many other programs.

Using AutoDialogs, you can automatically insert preselected folders into your dialog boxes using a system tray menu (requires only two clicks) or a pre-assigned hot key (one keystroke.) With AutoDialogs, you no longer need dozens of mouse clicks to navigate to that desired folder!

actually i maintain that review, and you are quite right that autodialogs should be added to it.
looks like i must have overlooked it originally..

doesnt work on my secondary monitor, so dual monitor people should test it out first before buying, but otherwise it looks like a reasonable dialog box extender.

i've added autodialogs to the review: http://www.donationcoder..../Archive/DialogExtenders/
summary: i would recommend the others above Auto Dialogs.

i would recommend the others above Auto Dialogs.

If it works on Vista when the others won't, or most likely won't, maybe you could suggest MetaProducts crib a few features... ?

This menu can be activated with a hot-key (Win+Z by default). Just let me know if you need keyboard shortcuts to other functions.

Update at November 1: implemented another hot-key (Win+W) to the Recent items menu.

By the way, latest version is works on Vista Wink

For some reason it wasn't working -- I uninstalled and re-installed, and presto it worked.  Not sure what was going on there, but at least now I can give it a proper test with the keyboard shortcut working. Heaven forbid I have to use a mouse. smiley
