ZIP 2 Secure EXE - Freeware
« on: September 01, 2006, 12:55 PM »
Nice freeware tool:

"ZIP 2 Secure EXE" is a utility program that creates self-extracting ZIP files for
Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP. Self-extracting ZIP files are executable programs (EXEs) that contain a ZIP file and the software necessary to unzip the contents. Users can unzip the contents of a self-extracting ZIP simply by running it like any other program. No other software is needed.
...
What Can You Do With This Program?
The encryption that you get with Zip utilities, including WinZip, is weak and easily broken. This utility allows you to strongly encrypt your ZIPs and at the same time makes it easy to unzip on any computer.
Use this utility to backup your security sensitive and important documents. As long as your password is secret, your files are safe.
Create software installations that only licensed customers will be able to install.

Humm, I'd rather use RAR self-extracting password-protected files... better compression, and I trust The Russians (TM). They're using AES as well.

AxCrypt is open source software that can create self-decrypting files.

It doesn't know anything about handling .zip files, but having a Zip utility is pretty much universal.

However, I can see that if you're sending the files to very non-computer savvy prople (like everyone in my family), the Chilkat tool would be nice.  I just get a good feeling from having the source to AxCrypt available (even though I've never actually done anything with it).

There is a freeware "SFX Compiler" (http://www.uticasoft...ucts/sfxcompiler.htm) that allows multiple files of different types to be compressed into a single EXE file. No encryption though.

bump!

Can anyone please explain the difference between self extracting zip and this particular sfx program? Anything special about it? The explanation on its website was not very revealing to me.
